My friend is a electrician. He had a barrel of bare bright copper wire. He took it to the scrap yard. They weighed the barrel and then dumped all the wire in their huge pile of bare bright. When they went to re-way the barrel to get the tear weight they told him the first weight never registered. They had to dig out what they think was his copper out of the pile and reweigh it . He seemed to think he got shorted quite a bit.

Yeah ,that is not on , it should all be kept separate and on view and not taken around the back, i insist on that when i take my scrap to yards and some don't like it. I remind them that as with any transaction in a shop the items remain my property until i agree to sell and receive the funds.

My pet peeve are scrapyards that do not have an outside weight read-out at all when you drive onto their scale. Customer is forced to simply take their word for it. Just appears to be a little shifty. I'm in Edmonton, Alberta.

Sharing a GOOD story. I brought in a small load of a few things to my yard recently. When I got my ticket, they gave me 69lbs of Cast Aluminum when I only had about 10! I told them about their mistake and they rewarded me for my honesty. I told them I had about 10, and they still paid me for 25lbs. Trust and honesty goes both ways!!! Now, they upgrade borderline materials for me (irony extrusion instead of just aluminum breakage for example).

I have a funny story about the truck scales. I went in dump my load of steel got on the scale and let's say my truck and trailer weighed, 12000 pounds. I went back home, did some driving around, picked up a few other things. Loaded up went and dumped again. The next day for a second load I weighed out.
And this time truck and trailer? My truck and trailer weighted 11920 Pounds. An 80 pound difference There was absolutely no difference between the day before and that next day. I didn't say anything because I had a super good rapport with the owner. I knew there must be some reason.
I had woke up the next day at about 2 o'clock in the morning and figured out. What the reason was I had used 10 gallons of gas. Add 8 pounds, a gallon. Which was the 80 pound difference? I'm really glad I didn't make a fuss over it The next time I went to the scrapyard, I told the owner of what happened and I thought he was gonna wet his pants. He was laughing so hard.🤠

Wish all scrap yards were as legit as yours. I showed up at one yard to sell some copper( good prices)and I sold to them. Then I had 90bls of hdmi cables with me ends cut and they asked if I wanted to sell it to them for 10 cents a pound. I quickly called another yard who said 40 cents. So I politely declined and drove 2 miles over for an extra 30 cents a pound.

I haven't sold anything to a scrap yard since 2009 , and will never do it again,
I built my own melting Forge and i make things with my aluminum , copper and brass

    3$ copper, I wish the local yard's price is $2.20 for #1 & $2.00 for #2. The price hasn't changed in over a year
It's the only yard in a 30 mile radius.

My scrap yard in Arizona has a lot of high tare weights on buckets. They use 4# for a 5 gal bucket as a tare. I weigh mine and have the weight on the bucket. Usually they use there weight and not mine.😎😎⛏⛏🔥🔥

My yard gives one price for aluminum ( except breakage). Itseems to average out if youhave a mixture of sheet and extruded.

I recall having all of these issues at one time or another. With so many yards in DFW area of Texas, it happens. I like seeing tare weights zero out before my copper is weighed. I know my truck and trailer weight. I keep rhe gas at half tank right before I roll in. I find aluminum is where the issues still happen. They only have 3 types cans, dirty or cast. I keep looking for a better yard. Thanks for bringing this subject up.

Buchman Iron and metal in LaSalle Illinois doesn’t let you know what your gross and tare weight is. I think they’ve been taking me for a lot of money so obviously I don’t go there anymore.

I brought in nice prepared steel to a so called scrapyard, actually a junkyard.
They gave me light iron price, when I brought it to their attention it was take it or leave response.
    I’ll never go back.

That's their loss, next time you have 100 pounds of copper or 200 of aluminium you'll be going somewhere decent. Do this to enough small scrappers like us and they will be out of business.

I had a problem with a upstate new york scrap yard when i first started out. I had a friend that gave me 30 vhs and dvd players from his business that was closing down. Me wanting to get the most out of it took everything apart even stripped the wires n stripped the tiny tranformers. Then irolled to the scrap yard with tin and buckets of copper wire, brass bits, short steel screws etc all sorted. They told me i was getting a 10% deduction on any metal that i had less than 100lbs of. I was so pissed, i will never go back there ever!

Yards that round down the weight of your loaded truck and round up the weight of your empty vehicle. Never lets you see what the scale registered. A yard in Edison, NJ

Things like fuel level will change weight some but not enough to really be a rdd flag unless it was full one time and almost empty the next.

How about this... on ferrous side.
When I drive onto entry scale the weight shown always falls before it settles when my truck comes to a stop.
Then the opposite happens on the exit scale. As I drive onto the scale the indicated weight always goes up before and as I stop my truck on the scale.
The net effect is I get burned with lower gross weight AND a higher tare weight.
I can't name the yard but it starts with a P in Hamilton Ontarii Canada.
    Yes, I am pissed!!
Out of fairness, the only time the scale does not do this, and moves randomly up or down before I come to a stop on the scale, is when the regular operator is off on lunch or coffee break.
In fact, I can reliably predict if it is the regular operator or not by how the scale weight moves, and I can confirm because they voice over speaker to pull ahead once they have recorded your weight.

Seems to be that one employee that shows up while your weighing your bare bright, that happens to notice one piece that's slightly darker than the rest. Then of course you get some random price. I.e. halfway between bare bright and #1

    • @zbigniewczaykowski514
      @zbigniewczaykowski514 18 днів тому

Bare bright is just a load of BS so they can pay you less, tarnish weighs nothing and it has to be melted anyway.
