I hope careers like these inspire guys to stay a couple more years in college if they need it. The number of top rated high schoolers that plummet their stock in their freshman season, still declare for the draft, and fall out of the league after a few years is staggering.

Skal had an interesting skill set. He just had the misfortune of being drafted by the Kings, during an era where they didn't put much emphasis (or were simply incapable of) developing young talent, especially bigs. His 2017 season was decent and he shoots FT well for a big. He's only 26 so I can see him making it back to the league.

The Kings not being able to develop young players is nonsense. If this were true tons of King's players would be on other teams succeeding. You even admit, Skal could make a comeback. Why is it "could"? If it was the King's issue, why didn't he leave and then flourish somewhere else?
The problem is that the King drafted bad players. Cousins, Evans, and Thomas did just fine because they were good. Jimmer, Mclemore, Robinson, Staukas all failed because they sucked.
The only player they drafted in the last decade or so that went on to become a better player than expected was Whiteside and that wasn't on the Kings. He was a headcase, lazy player who had to play outside the NBA for a few years until he got his head straight.
Look at the Kings now. Funny how a team becomes better when you draft better players.

I think that part of this man's downfall is just that he's a big in a time where coaches want big's to shoot corner 3's, set screens, and get offensive rebounds. If they try to play outside of that box and are not overwhelmingly proficient right from the start, coaches are going to bench them. It's been that way for a while. I can remember Kurt Thomas back in the late 90's. He lead division one in scoring at 30 PPG. That's unheard of in college. He got drafted late first round by the Knicks. The Knicks didn't even want to play him his rookie year. Ewing got injured in a game and I watched the coach reluctantly put Thomas into the game. Thomas would post up, call for the ball, score and the coach would be glaring at him. Thomas scored like 6 points on 4 shots in the next 6 minutes and the coach yoinked him out of the game. Thomas played 20 years in the league just rebounding and shooting put backs. A guy who could have been an all star, boxed into being something that any guy 6 foot 10 could be. I never understood why some players get boxed into certain things while others get all the freedom in the world to do whatever they want. I think that's what happened to Labassiere and he wasn't a great rebounder and couldn't shoot 3's so he lost his roster spot. If anything, I'd say that's bad coaching. The Kings have a good coach now, but between Adelman and Brown there hasn't been much talent on the Kings Coaching staff. ( I love Karl but he couldn't get along with Cousins and that team fell apart on him).

He is really skilled with both hands around the basket and has one of the softest shooting touches I've seen. He's got more shooting skill than most bigs that are playing in the NBA right now. I could never figure out why he wasn't given more of a chance to just play through whatever weaknesses the coaches were concerned about. Unfortunately Dave Joerger wasn't the right head coach for him and it probably stunted his development even more. It's a real shame, because the dude is full of talent and touch in his hands. Just needed more time to learn the game. Time that nobody seemed willing to loan him

I know this is almost entirely looking at him from a basketball perspective, but I think it's fallacious to say that Skal nominating for the draft was a mistake, when he said he did it for financial reasons.
His estimated career earnings is over $6m. Sure, perhaps he could have gotten better in college, stayed in the NBA, and earnt way more - but perhaps he also could have continued to be underwhelming and missed out on getting drafted entirely.
If you look at it from the financial perspective - the angle he used when he nominated for the draft - you could argue it was a success. Because of how much some players get paid, people forget how freaking much money $6m is.

    Two things:
    1) Skal was 6’11-7’0 and he averaged less rpg than UK’s 5’8 PG Tyler Ulis.
    2) His college coach, John Calipari, also used him as a back-to-the-basket big man when he was clearly more comfortable facing the basket as more of a stretch big. Even so, at 6-11 you can’t let your 5’8 PG outrebound you.
