@@WilliamMoeller-rr2op Regardless of whether he would have liked it or not, I wish people wouldn't use his name as "proof" that the "Animated" toys were good or not.
He may not have liked this take. But for certain, I'm really glad to see this honor his artistic legacy in some way. I certainly don't need to see 1:1 transliterations of his designs. I know for sure what he thought of some design takes. Such as the Bayverse version of Hot Rod.
I'm not collecting legacy, but I absolutely had to get this figure, and it does not disappoint! I think this is the perfect blend of Animated and a more blocky, detailed style. This is a success.
I always love it when crossovers featuring teams of characters have one that's supposed to be dead because it lets me think about who is taken from what time period. With the Transformers mythos, Legacy has like ten of those teams!
This is a great solid figure. Like he's not changing the world, but he's totally got main character energy in spades. I could see this as a possible Thunderclash repaint/remold. Just the heroic muscley proportions work for the IDW take.
I had no idea people had QC issues on this guy until you brought them up. I was also lucky to have no issues on my copy. I love this guy. I think it's a really good CHUG-ification of the original.
Exactly! I also got filler parts for him, and am eager for the DNA "rest-of-the-firetruck" upgrade kit. (Which will come with a faceplant/goggle helmet set if you get it pre ordered!)
I got this guy while I was at TFCON Toronto, and I spent the rest of the event in shock and awe that it transformed nearly identically to the Deluxe Animated Optimus I had 16 years ago. He's also just really fun to pose in general, though it took a few rotations before the mushroom joints between the shoulder and elbows would rotate smoothly without popping off.
It's a good thing there's a third party company like dna design because this prime is definitely needing a slight upgrade in the form of a trailer to cover up that problematic leg foot thing
Love this review. Do I think I'll get one? Nah. I still have Cybertronian Animated Prime from way back, and he's delightful. But its cool to see Prime reimagined with new engineering. I like seeing how the arms fold out during transformation to reveal painted Autobot insignias on the shoulders.
I think the only things I don't like about this is how the feet work in truck mode and no deployable face mask, BUT this thing is great besides. Cool transformation, good poseability and a much more accurate axe. All in all, far better execution than Prowl IMO
I need to grab one of these and very excited for Motormaster and Toxitron. Hope we get a Nemesis and I would buy a White Magnus out of this even though it would be based on nothing SG Animated Prime would be fantastic to get
From having recently watched the episode where Megatron return in animated, a new leader class Animated Megatron would be cool especially if he came with sari’s key
Hey Vangelus, great review! I'm a semi-new collector but long time viewer and was just wondering, do you use any reference when you're posing? And where do you find it if you do? I always love how dynamic you can make figures look.
it's mostly just a lot of experience playing with toys through adulthood, haha I wanna say that many years ago there were one or two blog posts put out by figma and/or bandai which went into some basic detail on how to make a figure look more "alive" even in a standing pose, it's a lot of little things like having the toes point slightly outward
My thoughts are in my review 🤣😉😉 But other than the ‘missing’ heels and the, potentially sporadic qc issues on my copy, I enjoy this toy. Great video as usual Chris.
This figure to me is a pale reminder that we're likely not getting a toy series like animated again. The additions of a ton of great engineering and detail thats ultimately left with weird color blocking and a lack of paint show the shift in production techniques and priorities from the designers, where Animated was extremely dedicated to making designs that just pop out of their respected cartoons.
Great figure. Wondering when Takara will take a run at Optimus and Bee here to spruce up the paint apps and ditch that clear plastic on the yellow guy. Hmm.
@@muisverriet There are still premium finish releases that Takara still makes, like Dramatic Capture or Beast Wars VS Returns. I could totally see they do same with Animated, which is why I’m still waiting lol
was kind of considering getting one of these for myself, but then a friend ended up sending me the deluxe optimus from the original animated toyline, and by that i mean the japanese lottery winner figure of indeterminate rarity with the earth mode and without the battle damage so. yeah i think im just gonna wait for the motormaster to try this one out lol
Don't have any issues on my copy but seeing how these toys are pumped out of a machine by the thousand so there definitely going to be a few bad eggs in an otherwise great figure .
I'm not the biggest "Animated" fan. I think a lot of the hype dampered whatever possible love I could have had for the show. I don't hate it, I just think it's. Fine. That having been said, I do agree that the toys are spectacular, and that it was going to take a lot to make new "Animated" figures that could stand up to the originals. Frankly, I think Optimus and Bumblebee are superior to their 2008 toys. Prowl I'd say is equal. My favorite thing about Optimus is that there's no mechanism in the waist so it's not loose like it would get on the old Voyager.
If only the other Animated Legacy toys were as good as him but, that's the Prime Privilege, he would be the most accurate one while the others were compromised to shit...
If someone doesn't mind the extra greebles and G1 details, sure, fine, that's up to them. But everyone keeps saying that his proportions are "exactly like the original", which he very clearly is not. For starters, this figure has zero waist... despite even having a fake grill ab section, it gets completely swallowed up by the upper body, and it looks terrible. I've seen this figure get modded to have a longer internal "spine", thereby fixing that part of his silhouette and gifting him his midsection back, however that immediately revealed another issue, which is that his shoulders sit *really* high up; the tops of them are supposed to be flush with the top of his chest, but they sit higher than that and make him look awkward even when modded. Additionally, I feel like everybody praising this OP for being "beefy" hasn't watched the show in 15 years or is medically blind; sure, Animated Optimus had a broad chest and shoulders, and some large wide boots, but he wasn't "beefy" - in fact he was quite lean/slim, just with very heroic Bruce Timm-esque proportions. This figure looks bloated, like he has some sort of medical condition with his body. Again if you like how the figure looks in a vacuum, that's great - but he is VERY far from being accurate. Maybe not as far as the TFP Legacy toys, but far nonetheless.
Man I wish Derrick got to see these figures
Take hat off for respect the man
He would have had an “interesting” take on this new design
Breaks my heart that he passed away less than two years before Animated Prowl was revealed.

Only in Vangelus toy review. 👌😭
I started watching you when Animated figures came out, now watching you review these Legacy Animateds 16 years later....
Vangelus covering animated toys.
Nostalgia I remember watching some of the earliest videos when they came out

the classic hero pose of hyperextending one's knees
9:57 is this pose “what if Optimus Prime, but also Freddie Mercury?”

oh yeah and with Prowl it even adds angles like "does his force ghost see two friends getting pulled into legacyworld & follow them in"

Geez, I hate finding massive blocks of blue foot stuff.
Though not as much as my doctor.
If only we could have the full-length fire truck like how he was in the show by having that trailer included.
It's a good thing there's a third party company like dna design because this prime is definitely needing a slight upgrade in the form of a trailer to cover up that problematic leg foot thing
"Main meatball of the cab" is a weirdly accurate description.
May the 22nd be with you
Man, it's been that long since Animated started? Where does the time go?
My copy's swivel joints make him "Mold Flash: The Toy"
I picked this guy up a week or so ago and love the way he turned out! Mine also won the QC lottery and is very solid!

There’s no Transformers review like a Transformers review by Vangelus!
Would also like to add that this mold is getting Animated Motormaster release in Wave 4 of Legacy United.
I'd love a Toxitron variant of this mold!
Ah, memories of 360p...
He slays so hard. ✨
I was very interested in him, but nothing beats that old voyager! I haven't picked this up yet
I really do hope they do a release with the trailer, it’s absolutely designed with that in mind based on all those oddly positioned ports.
I need to grab one of these and very excited for Motormaster and Toxitron. Hope we get a Nemesis and I would buy a White Magnus out of this even though it would be based on nothing
SG Animated Prime would be fantastic to get

Excited for the motormaster
I still constantly think of "I'm used to it being the other way around. I guess I'd better get used to new and exciting things."
I have this guy up in display in my room right now

9:59 best optimus prime thirst trap.
Unsure which pose hurt more but I would definitely make mine do a Dab on a TFA Megatron. One can dream.
Man, I really want this guy. Next paycheck I get, I'm getting him on Amazon.

I gotta get this for a friend he only has 07 movie cyberstomper hopefully the upgrade kit even though he wants dotm original mech tech trailer one.
Animated and the Unicron Trilogy def came out of Legacy relatively unscathed compared to Prime.

Waiting for The Crimson Chin aka Sentinel prime in legacy line
The figure is rather near... But that DNA design kit coming out is going to be a huge reason to grt him.

Never cause apart from Earthspark they don't do that anymore. Every toy is the same in Japan now.

Yes, the mold flashing on my copy was BAD. But a quick pop out and light sanding with wifeys nail file made it buttery smooth!

I really like this figure but the red and blue are are so bland compared to any other optimus figure and I don't understand why
it's "secret-ed," not "secrete-ed." No one wants you to secrete anything
