I got into making my own boards, and being a physics geek, I wrote my own design software including the math to calculate volume. You are absolutely right that there are many ways to distribute foam, and imho people forget how much is hidden in the rockers (deck, rail, and stringer). The 3 dims on boards + volume only tell a little bit of the story. Volume is good to get in a reasonable ballpark though. The other thing I've noticed is that the commercial boards I own do not measure the exact dimensions written on them. Easily an inch different in length! So it doesn't surprise me at all that between brands the true volume can be different. You might want to get a tape out and measure your boards, especially that frk! Might discover something? Anyway, thanks for doing this series! It is awesome to hear the feedback a pro surfer gives on these boards. Brett's barrel riding is insane!
Wow you hit the nail on the head! My husband shaped and operated the CNC machine, he checks my new boards out all the time and they are always off dims from what the stringer says and what I ordered. Unless he makes them himself they’re never “right”. These pros are just amazing in what they do and work with, so lucky to have attentive shapers and also a lot of boards can get rejected.
Another awesome series REAL team! It would be cool in future seasons if there was some live feedback of the boards on the beach after a session to go with the overview discussions in the loft.
Thank you so much for the informative video as always. Brett is an awesome guy and so is Trip. Great information that shapers should’ve told me back when I was a kid and it’s all for free here. Hell yeah!
I love my black Stix f6 I have the p8 too just haven't tried it yet would like to try the r8 for weak waves. The f6 goes amazing up to just overhead then its a little to twitchy imo in hawaii waves. But lots of drive and projection out of turns. Waiting for futures to make the vector in blackstix lol
because all boards differ in outline, rocker etc i would suggest to always start with volume and not dims.... the volume(give or take 1-2 liters) will guide you to where the shaper wants you to choose from and not the dims....
amazing video, now hesitating between a round driver 3.0 and a lane splitter from chris. I feel like Brett enjoyed mostly those two, by the descriptions he makes of them and by my needs. I feel that one of those 2 would suit me well but i HESITATE !!
What is Brett’s height and weight? Might be a good idea to say that at the beginning of each episode for the viewers. Love the content! Keep it coming🤙🏽
BTW, fin tech like the FCS PC keep the material characteristics for years.... so no need to replace even if newer versions with different graphics of the same fins come out...
Well done 👍🏽 boys! ❤ I love to feel my boards, want/need custom dims but can’t ever feel that custom before it’s delivered so …. It’s tough to get what you really think you want.
Just talk to the shaper and if you have a stock board from them don't be afraid to explain your concerns with the board they can direct you in the mods they need to make or possibly even to a different model that would suit you better
Hey, would REAL be open to dropping a reveiw on the pyzel radius prime? Swallow tail or squash tail, i know bretts got a radius in his quiver in a round tail so if hes got room in the quiver, the radius prime would fit in a squash or swallow tail even as an all rounder. Love the reviews and content. Much support.
Please get Brett to do the high line not the radius or radius prime as there is no reviews on the board and it would definitely be a sick board to see Brett surf
the plug in fin industry puts in so much work into the fins, but the boxes they sit in suck. cut out from a jig, they pour QCELL into the hole, push in the box, FCS or Futures, then just glass them in, usually under a standard glass job being 4oz. Flex is questionable. Glass in fins without doubt are superior but of course you cannot swap them out. all my best boards in the past had glassed in fins with rovings. The shaper, take Allan Byrne for example, KNEW which fins worked on his boards because being a master shaper, it was a part of his craft to know this. He told me once that he figured he could make a living with a sanding block at Snapper watching people surf, seeing their boards bark like dogs and simply tuning their fin sets to work. I inspected five Al Merricks off the rack recently and the edges on the tail rails were so poorly sanded that the hard edges were at least four inches out on each side. These boards will never work. Ever. Truth is, the sander is the guy who will make or break your board. Its more than just fins, a dud blank will ruin your experience, a bad sander, or terrible rocker entry can hold you back. your chances of getting a magic board is very low and if you have one, try getting it replicated, it wont be the same. When you see pros boards work well its simply because the shaper and his team put in much more effort than they will yours and of course, a hundred boards a year helps alot with finding a good one. Its all luck.
This videos are gold, keep it up guys. Learning so much from all this and my surfing is improving massive.
Absolutely love this series. So much valuable info backed up by someone who absolutely rips
Well done fellas. Damn that Brett is a good surfer and fun to watch ---- relatable but inspiring.

Thankyou for answering the questions that were asked, love the series and the surfing being done.
felt like a 7 minute video bc of how engaging and chalk-full of good info this was. Thanks guys.

🎉 great reviews.so he love the radius? i knew it

Brett, you shred the lane splitter 🤙

Did @brettbarley ever end up trying out the futures vector 3/2 fins?
Would definitely be curious to see him on the CI twin pin (season 3) given his liking of the lane splitter
Nice good stuff I really enjoyed these videos
Awesome video guys 🤙🏽
really interesting..... TOP !!! 🤙
Y'all gotta open a store around Wilmington. No good board shops around here.

@@bsmbBYes, lots of value in working with a shaper, especially a local one who rides the same waves.
Great work on this series!

Slater mid length could be a sick review. Ik kevin Shultz got a an air reverse on it 🚀
For season 3 put Brett onto a Christenson Wolverine... He might need to be persuaded though
You should try the christenson op2 or 3
No good op3 reviews that would be epic !
Just got an OP2, excited to try it 🤙
Electric acid test at home with Brett🤷♂️🤔🤔🤗
Great!

Love this series. Really cool and waves are terrible. No one should come to NC to surf. All kidding aside nice series.
