    As a non Harley guy can you tell me how the rotor is floating if its bolted to the wheel. Surely the idea of a floating rotor is for lateral self alignment with the caliper and pads. Also why do HD use a mix of metric and imperial fastners?

    • @DrHarley
      @DrHarley  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I can. The boots hold the spacers tight and the spring washers allow the rotor to float.

    • @louismartin4446
      @louismartin4446 2 роки тому +1

      On super sport bikes, rotors can be full floating or semi-floating. The former actually jingle The whole idea is to have equal and symmetrical braking action between brake pad and rotor (self adjusting).

      @@louismartin4446 yes I'm used to rattling brake discs that why I couldn't see how these were floating. Most floating discs I've seen are have a carrier that bolts to the wheel with the disc attached with bobbins.

    • @louismartin4446

      HI Colin Full disclosure: I know nothing about HD’s as I only own sport bikes. HOw HF calls these “floating rotors” is a stretch at best.
      Firstly, as you know, there is a big difference betweeen semi and FULL floating and all related to the bobbins/carrier design.
      I suspect HD is calling these “floating” because those washers “act” like a semi-fixed attachment? In this vid one of those washers broke and I suspect that’s what they are supposed to do when the “semi-floating” action develops fatigue and gives away. I use the words
      “Supposed to do” satirically of course. I clean my semi floating bobbins to ensure the “semi floating action” is retained. But HD has a different perspective I gather. Perhaps a brake/HD expert can chime in because I am interested in knowing the true “science” here.
      I think the video and this discussion furthers our collective knowledge about bikes and - in the end- we all benefit because we love our bikes-all shapes/sizes and brands.

      The shouldered washers bottom out against the wheel then the spring washers allow the rotor to move side to side so the pressure against the rotor from the pads is equal

    What about aftermarket rotors? Do they all use the same spring washers? I bought an 07 electra glide ultra classic and rotors are clunking. At first I thought it was play in the axle shaft and wheel bearings but it does appear to be rotors. Im also getting pulsation when braking.

    • @DrHarley
      @DrHarley  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes the after market rotors use the same mounting hardware. I recommend replacing all the hardware when replacing the rotors. Harley states that the rotor bolts are a 1 time use only.

    • @chadquinn1087
      @chadquinn1087 5 місяців тому +1

      Does it typically cause a pulsation? I didnt hear you mention it.

    • @DrHarley
      @DrHarley  5 місяців тому +1

      @chadquinn1087 no. Pulsations are due to the warping of the rotors. Most of the time.

  • @donaldhimes6297

    Could you replace these without taking the wheel off?

    • @DrHarley
      @DrHarley  Рік тому +2

      Yes you can. You can just do one bolt at a time and spin the wheel to get access to each bolt.

    Any chance this can be done without wheel removal?

    • @DrHarley
