A year or two before he died I travelled from London to Paris to watch him. I arrived at the club in the afternoon while they were sound checking. They let me in, and had the amazing privilege to watch Art up close. The mind-blowing power, combined with amazing swing was awesome...a treasured memory!
I bumped into a young worker in a music shop today, he was in the drums section. I asked him who his favourite drummer is, he said Art Blakey. So good to hear that people in their early 20's understand this groundbreaking drummer.
Fancy seeing you here, Leo, you were a part of my childhood. It's such a shame that the state UA-cam is in in regards to the stuff you've made for years. Nice to know you're still Here, There, and Everywhere ;)
Those Pressed tolls were among his many incredible signatures. Of all the qualities I appreciate his Mentorship qualities the most. He started the Messengers with legendary Pianist Hirace Silver. I grew up in NYC in the 60s and 70s. My Father, also born and raised in New York grew uo with Bebop and Art was amongst his Favorite drummers and musicians. Many of my favorite Musicians have gone through his band. I'd see him several times a year either in clubs like the Vanguard or Jazzmobile . It was at the latter where he really connected wuth his audience. A free Concert series in tge summer created to entertain and bring music to everyone. He'd talk about the beauty and greatness of the Music, it's culture and need to be continued. He was a proud Man, serious and with a sense of humor.
it's good when Drumeo does these "genius of" videos for older music...I couldn't hear the bass drum at all from those recordings, but with modern recording and video quality, these bad old recordings come to life!!!
What sticks with me about this great presentation was Art’s passion and honesty in presenting his music on the bandstand. His do or die stance and how he communicated with his band members.
Got to know Mr. Blakey when I was in my teens, a few years before he passed. He had his problems, to be sure, some of which weren't widely known, but he couldn't have been kinder or more generous to me. Really miss him. Thanks so much, Brandon, for such doing such a wonderful job paying tribute to the man and his, well, art.
Never having met the man, I have to say his humanity and empathy shone through like the sun in this video, not just in the sections where he's talking, but also in the way he us communicating through his drumming. I think I may have just taken a step or two further on my jazz journey while watching this video 🫨😉
What’s the point with alleging that Blakey had some unspecified “problems, to be sure”? And by what expertise do you claim that some of them “weren’t widely known”?😅
Man I wish my generation and the younger ones listened to jazz more to see the beauty in this genre. Thank you Drameo for reminding youngins to this amazing legend
Thank you Drumeo and Brandon for the hard work you put into this video! Art is very historic and even just a few of these licks you broke down would help anyone wanting to improve their Jazz chops.
A Great Gentleman, Mentor and Band Leader. He gave the younger generation of Jazz musicians an incredible platform to hone their skills and be heard worldwide. Buhaina sculpted World Class Jazz Musicians and presented them with a Great opportunity. We used to hang with him in New York and he would always welcome, educate, and encourage us...Art Blakey "Grand Master".
Man I was lucky to see so many of his contemporaries and compatriots who still toured the south in the early eighties, and so many new torch-bearers who were influenced by his groove...he was such an innovative jazz engine, My fav albums of his includes, 'Unstoppable', that's what he was. Never another like him
Blessed to have discovered Art Blakey five years ago. So much great hard bop music, and I love his drumming. One By One is my favorite, but there are so many others worth appreciating.
Brilliant!!!! His influence on multiple genres of music is evident through his amazing skill, showmanship and ability to using the drums to sing as a service to the song has inspired so many of the greats!!!!
It’s easy to miss especially in this modern era but art Blakey’s drumming is all about dynamics and energy. The power actually comes from his use of dynamics. Thanks for the video I saw a couple albums I don’t have?
To begin with I really love Art Blakey's music. I think what drew me into his music was the thumping percussion and showmanship. What I didn't appreciate until now was his elevated technique and musicianship. Thank you!
Learned that Elvin stole his 6/8 bossa whatsit for a version of 'like sunny' with Coltrane. When I heard that years ago, it blew me out. Good work guys.
Drumeo thank you for exposing us to the legends and these various art forms. Greatly appreciated. Big up to Art Blakey, family friends and pioneers in music that we can all find our voice on drums and all the other instruments.
Great video! Art is one of the pillars of jazz drumming that many stand on the shoulders of. Also that kit sounds amazing especially the cymbals! What are they????
I feel the need to qualify this comment before I make it, as such I must profess to not being a particularly dedicated fan of jazz music. I'm simply much more Rock 'n Roll. That's what stirs my soul man, RIP Lemmy 🙏🤘🫡❤️🔥 However... having watched this vid, and recognising several classic tracks, and having heard in Mr Blakey's diverse repertoire of quite incredible, technical and above all soulful (in the human, not musical sense of that word) journeys around the kit, several beats and fills that were so reminiscent of Mr Bonham Sr. that I can only surmise that Bonzo was influenced by Art in no small way, whether consciously or not; I can only say that the series title of,"The genius of..." has rarely, if ever been more apt! Thank you Drumeo for always bringin' it. Love what you do 🫡🤘❤️🔥🙏
Thank you, Brandon, for another excellent installment in the "Genius" series. It's so fantastic to see the spotlight being shown on Art Blakey's enormous talent. Not only was he a titan on the drum kit, but - as you point out - he was a titan in jazz music for all of the mentorship and opportunities that he provided to future jazz luminaries who joined the Jazz Messengers as sidemen.
What a drum sound! I want to bring that drum sound into punk rock. Blakey, Roach, Elvin had the sound of a real kit, how a kit should sound: raw, boomey live, like you're in the room. That is punk! He was beyond good. He was a drum god! My next recordings will have that drum sound :)
I think you also need to cover Philly Joe Jones and Tony Williams. You did great on Art and Elvin! Those 4 guys are the pillars of Jazz. I remember John Blackwell mentioning all these great musicians.
This is the most important thing I learned from this video: I should have attended at least one of his performances when he performed at a local Jazz club. :( Awesome video!!!
On his recordings he swings hard! He brings drama and dynamics and ear catching counterpoint rhythms. He would surprise and delight with riff changes. He was great to watch. He lived his music!
As a non-drummer, i knew alot about the musicians that came up through the jazz messengers, and that Art Blakey's drumming was exciting. Breaking down some of what he did into the techniques and patterns you described - well - I'll enjoy listening witjh an enhanced appreciation for what he's doing. Thanks!
My Dad, Who was my jr high band director (and for 23 yrs). Took me to see Art and ‘the Messengers’ @ St. Paul MN theater when I was probably 15yo. - Art was aleady very gray- but played his a,, off! I remember specifically (at that age)his cross-overs. Maybe that’s part of the reason - (that of course, I listened to Rock music coming up like most kidst did)... But really never connected to it like I did to Jazz, Soul & R&B etc. - So, from a jazz degree later, playing everthing my whole professional career so far. Whenever I’m asked (and we all get the question) “ who’s your favorite drummer?” I usually start w Art Blakey, Al Foster, Max, S.Ferrone,Jeff P...in the top 5 and if they then glaze over... Then, I help ’em out with S.Copeland, S.Jordan, etc.😄 Hence I hear, amd probably play a little heavy-handed for some people when swingin away😁. And we keep groovin’!
My DUDE!!! Oba-Baba Art! [King-Father] Wait! Anyone else notice that Babatundé Olatunji looked like he could've been Baba Art's younger brother. Baba Art had serious Yourba/Nigerian features. Two powerful ground breaking Brotha drummers - one Diaspora and the other Continental. 🥁 🪘
You guys should make “Genius Of” videos for some more jazz drummers! I kinda feel like I sound like a grandpa when I say this, but there’s lots to learn from the drummers that propelled jazz in it’s prime during the 20th century! The vast majority of today’s music comes from the music they played. Guys like Baby Dodds, Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Tony Williams, Brian Blade, Jack DeJohnette, Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, Kenny Clarke, Papa Joe Jones, etc. Anyway, just a thought. That would be super cool if you could just do one or two of these guys!
Great video, Blakey is the master of swing, a must for all drummers ! Thanks. And by your cymbals sound amazing what are they the ride is fabulous ? Best
Excellent! Brandon tell Jared they need to add a category to the drumeo awards for your awesome work on this genius series. You deserve an award for this series!!!
So cool. Huge influence on me. Ug all started with a record I bought at a thrift sale for 50 cents in around 1980. Played with Geoffrey Keezer back in the day.

That’s sick bro, I got into art Blakey when I was only in 7th grade and now I’m going to college to get my teaching degree in jazz and big band

love the honor to the greats lately, Brandon. Drumeo has been doing great things
UNIQUE
what cymbals are you using Brandon. they look and sound amazing!
That smile while he plays is so genuine. Good to see him doing what he loves.
In this world of chops and complexity, it's refreshing when you hear someone like Blakey make you feel great music.
