I would DEFINITELY be interested in a comparison between this Criterion 4K and the BFI 4K. So I can get more information and buy what I feel seems like the best version.
Thank you for having a channel that gets right to the point. Enjoy you review the disc and not the movie itself. I think most collectors have already seen the film. Keep it up
I would definitely love to hear your thoughts on the comparison and how much the HDR inclusion versus the alleged Criterion specific scrubbing process compares
2:25 "Michael Jeck Commentary"- Jeck was actually one of my professors in college! One of the courses I took with him was a Japanese Film course, and of course he brought this up in the class lol (I watched the full film with his commentary, and many of his points were things he had also said in the class so I had heard him say much of it before, but in person)
I look forward to the BFI comparison. Hopefully we get more information about the source print that each of them used. I heard a couple of months ago that the master that they both got from Toho was the same and in SDR, but Idk if that's true. I'm curious what the dynamic range of the source print is regardless tho
I actually forgot the film has already released on 4k Blu-ray. This is one of my absolute favorite Kurosawa films. I wanna see how it was remastered. Hopefully I’ll see that it retained all the film grain and other filmic effects that made Kurosawa films great. In fact I’m playing Ghost of Tsushima in Kurosawa Mode right now. But I remembered this recently released, so I’m going to watch this review before continuing Ghost of Tsushima on my PS5.
@@leonardgbrisebois The criterion packaging is absolutely beautiful so I may end up buying both. Not sure how Dolby Vision can have much of an impact on b&w film considering how warm it is but cannot wait to see the comparisons
I am so intrigued by their being an additional release of this movie that includes Dolby Vision... I mean, how could it not be better at that point? I would love to see your coverage and a small side by side comparison of the 2 products. I was locked to buy it at Barnes and Noble, but I felt justified in not purchasing it because of this additional information. I love when the movies have Dolby Vision, even though it usually looks great still without it on Oled. I just feel more like I am getting my moneys worth. I still get annoyed when the people do Non HDR releases on the movies. Cannibal Apocalypse from Kino is a non HDR transfer but it looks insane and spins at 100 mb's through the whole run time... So I guess it's just my perception and doesn't matter as much as I think it should. I personally just want my images in 4k to pop off the screen with crazy Vibrant and or lush colors. I get a kick out of that. In this case I am hoping the Blacks will become Inky on the Dolby Vision transfer like in the movie the Train with Burt Lancaster, or Streets of Fire with Willam Defoe.
@@kevindudley9617 I've read online that there is little added difference in the HDR on BFI version. However, I wonder if due to Dolby Vision container on BFI it will be better on uncalibrated TV's.
Yes please! A comparison between both versions would be fantastic. Either way, I'll have to import so would love to get the best version possible. The BFI with Dolby Vision seems like the frontrunner to me so far. Thanks!
The BFI release states that it has an updated and improved set of subtitles; which is especially important to someone like me who doesn't understand Japanese. Does the Criterion release have this too?
So, if you have the old release, stick with that for the extras and buy the BFI release for the film. If you don't own Seven Samurai at all, buy both releases.
I don’t understand why Criterion continues to skip HDR for these classic releases (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Seventh Seal, etc) while BFI goes the extra step and adds it. Given the premium price Criterion charges it is quite a disappointment.

Yes to the BFI comparison. Thank you.
Thanks ADAM! And YES we want a comparison with the BFI HDR/DV release:)
me too!
Me three!
Me four!
Me five! I already ordered the Criterion version though.
Me six
Comparison of the BFI disc with the Criterion disc would be very interesting.
Great early review. Yes pls compare the BFI to the Criterion.
I'd love to see a comparison with the Dolby vision version.
This will probably be my first ever 4K double dip regardless, but PLEASE YES a Criterion vs BFI review!
Thanks for all that you do!

Yes. Please do a video on the comparison.
I would definitely love to hear your thoughts on the comparison and how much the HDR inclusion versus the alleged Criterion specific scrubbing process compares
yes to the comparison

+1 for a comparison video. I've owned Seven Samauri on VHS, DVD, and currently Blu. I would like to know which version to get before I upgrade again.
Would love to see the comparison.
Also would like to see the comparison between the two
Curious about the BFI version. I own the regular Criterion bluray, so I ordered the BFI 4k disc.
A comparison to the BFI release would be awesome!
Interested in the BFI comparison, absolutely!

I went with the BFI 4K release due to the inclusion of HDR10 and Dolby Vision on that one.
I want the comparison!!!!

Yes, please compare this with the BFI version. Nice job!
Need that comparison for sure.
Also waiting for my BFI edition. Please make a comparison video.
Same here. I’d love to see an A and B between the two. Also awesome review Adam. I have mine and looking forward to watching it soon.
I would like to see you review the UHD 4K BFI edition of Seven Samurai.
Please do a comparison. No onebonline has one.
I was going to blind buy the Criterion edition but I'm holding out for the BFI comparison, so please, by all means. It would be greatly appreciated.
I preordered the BFI version for the Dolby Vision and I also own the Criterion blu ray.
@@leonardgbrisebois The criterion packaging is absolutely beautiful so I may end up buying both. Not sure how Dolby Vision can have much of an impact on b&w film considering how warm it is but cannot wait to see the comparisons
Please do compare the BFI 4K to the Criterion. I have the CC Blu so have those supplements, probably wouldn’t mind additional ones from BFI.
I already have the Criterion blu-ray of this film so will upgrade to the BFI 4k so hopefully they offer a better picture with HDR!

So looking forward to this! Thx for the early review. I wonder how the Criterion compares to the BFI version.
The BFI 4K release (which is on its way to me) has HDR10 and Dolby Vision whereas the Criterion Collection is a 4K SDR master.
@@kevindudley9617 I've read online that there is little added difference in the HDR on BFI version. However, I wonder if due to Dolby Vision container on BFI it will be better on uncalibrated TV's.

Since I'm in Europe I've ordered the BFI version. Hopefully it's a winner. 😁

Please do a comparison with the bfi :)
Would love to see a comparison. It's a little perplexing why Criterion is leaving HDR off of so many recent black & white 4K releases...
So, if you have the old release, stick with that for the extras and buy the BFI release for the film.
If you don't own Seven Samurai at all, buy both releases.
Would love to see comparison with BFI
I need a comparison. I didn't get this because of the missing HDR. SO I'm definitely looking at comparisons to see if it's worth an import
I dont understand why Criterion leaves HDR/DV off of so many 4k releases. Anyone know why?
I already saw The Magnificent Seven now I feel that was a mistake because I won't be able to fully appreciate this
I think the BFI version looks better in 4k
Got this version but BFI beckons

They used Ai...
Yet another half baked release from Criterion… no HDR and no new special features.
Yes, Criterion days of glory are gone. It became lazy, despite some great releases from time to time.
They release 5 titles a month. They have enough on their plate
Did you see you sell out to boutique labels ? Some of these movies are not good you recommend
You are saying you aren't a fan of 7 Samurai or are you an AI?
It has an 8.6 on IMDB, ranking #22 of all-time!!
Didn't like the movie. It's about one hour & half too long.
