I think supporting your local businesses is definitely a good idea. As a case in point, my car died on me in quite a dramatic fashion - it suddenly made a very loud rattling, so I immediately pulled over and turned the engine off. Thereafter it wouldn't start, so I walked up to my local garage (I've used them since 2007) and they sorted out getting the car recovered to their garage (within 30 minutes). After further investigation, they phoned me and said they were sending my car up to their larger garage just 3 miles away. It turns out that that the timing belt tensioner was knackered, due to being fitted incorrectly some 3 and a half years ago. The garage replaced the timing belt, tensioner and water pump for the princely sum of £400 - considering the amount of time they spent on the car to find the problem, I think that's a very fair price. The garage also informed that I saved myself a much bigger bill by stopping immediately - bent valves etc. if I had carried on driving.
They did you proud there for £400, I had my timing belt, tensioner and water pump changed last year (it was due) for £230 (1.2 petrol) without any of the grief you went through with yours, that's a garage to keep going to. I have a garage like that, I had to have the sump replaced on mine and when they had issues due to a manufacturing fault they without hesitation gave me the courtesy car for the weekend, all for a £130 job. As a thank you I left the courtesy car with a tank of petrol in it, keep them right they do the same for you.
I drove one of these in Tennerife. Then I drove a hyundai atoz in tennerife 2 years later. They were both brilliant holiday cars. They were spacious, light and easy to drive.
Around here (Costa Rica), the Matiz/Spark is extremely popular for it's 60 mp(Imperial)g economy, nimble size, and notable durability. Vintage 2000 versions still trade at more than £1500, while contemporary cars command significantly less. We love Myrtle.

Ugh. The Wd40 addicts lol!! Kitchen cleaner spray with bleach, the bleach softens rubber. Spray a bit on the parked blades and leave it to work. Possibly on some shop towel or similar if concerned for plastics etc nearby.
White vinegar +1 (also the best for cleaning washing machines - do a 90/95degree cycle every month or two with vinegar and/or a dishwasher tablet inside and you'll have a machine as good inside as the day it left the warehouse)
A couple of brothers I know started their own garage about 15 years ago and told me how much it cost them to kit it out, become testers, get everything ship shape and legal, etc etc etc. Let me tell you, it'd take a lot of 'cheap' MOTs to pay for what their initial outlay was. It's why I'm more than happy to pay a reasonable price for an MOT, which for mine is usually about £55 like your Matiz. Always happy to pay anything reasonable to a garage for quality work and honesty. I'd never try and save £20 on a test by going to Kwik Fit and then...well you know the rest.
Spot on there, one of my cars had its MOT last Friday and the tester is a happy soul who talks you through what he's doing. Something I'm happy to pay a good price for. Even better was his remark to his boss that my car was the best presented for an MOT he'd seen in a few years.

Quite the outlay, but their heart and soul was in it and they'd been mechanics for a major car manufacturer for years and wanted to branch out on their own. They made a real success of it too... The garages I use are busy places which have a reputation based on workmanship through word of mouth. They've no reason to fail you or lie about anything, or bodge work, etc. because work is always there for them. My guys tell me what needs doing, what the minimum that needs doing is, and what they recommend including observations of things needing work in the near future. When you've got peace of mind, I'm sure any of us here would be happy to pay to have our pride and joys taken care of. I do a lot of work on my car myself but know my limits.. you know you're on to a winner when getting work done at your garage feels more like an investment than walking the plank and hoping for the best.

Can totally agree on the Bosch wipers having gone crap. I had a few sets but they started chatting after a few months. I’ve since used Halfords own (made by Valeo) and they have been perfect for over a year

I’ve been watching your channel since the first Lockdown, and it’s you love of cars and driving that I enjoy the most. So you farming work out rather than tinkering suits me just fine! You getting frustrated and depressed about the lack of progress isn’t very enjoyable to watch. You collecting a car that has been sorted out by someone else (whether that’s the lads at your local garage or generous followers or contacts) then explaining what they did and how much better the car is to drive sounds like a good plan to me! ☺️☺️☺️
Ian I've just worked out why the tinkering days are over , it wasn't the train going by in the garden, or was it the totally disorganised garage that you worked in at the time . George was the mechanic behind the camera and you took all the glory for it , Ian you are a naughty boy.
I enjoy watching you have fun driving these old and quirky cars. I also enjoy the little history lessons you give on the development and engineering of the cars - the more arcane the better. And of course I love the tours of Welsh villages.
I've also had an issue with new wiper blades chattering. A fix for it is to polish the windshield or to used a product like rainx to smooth out the glass. I also quite enjoy the country and I appreciate your support of a rural business!
Hey Ian. I cure chattering wipers by grabbing the wiper arm near the blade with mole grips or adjustable spanner and putting a slight twist in the arm to lean the blade over at a different angle. It never fails to fix the problem, is quick and free!
Love your vlogs! Not only for the cars, but seeing Aberystwyth and the surrounding countryside. Fun fact….I used to own and run the Farmers Arms in Llanfihangel- y- Creuddyn. ( now back in my native Newcastle, Australia).
Glad you have Myrtle back on the road. That is an important lesson to learn when you own cars like the ones you have. What can I do and what do I have to farm out because you can't. Not a comment on your abilities, just a hard fact that saves a lot of headaches.
Farm more work out if it means getting more of the fleet on the road!!! Let's get driving and little adventures in the fleet. Mixed with simple tinkering wud be perfect for me.
Was an MOT tester for many years , and always that complaint about actually paying for it , always thought it was funny considering an MOT tester spends average 30 o 40 minutes , how much would the Dentist charge ? , and for most especially in the PCP age , it is the only time a clever bloke looks at it [ Yes we are clever and vastly underpaid , but depending where you go , quick fit maybe not but most are under appreciated clever folk doing a very good job ] .
Let's leave Kwikfit at the kerb where it belongs lol. I don't mind paying for an MOT because the peace of mind that it gives knowing the car is safe is worth more than money for me.
When I used to DIY my cars I would appreciate greatly the MOT testers ‘testing and checking’ of my amateur spannering, especially if I’d had to replace something major. Mind you my recent experience of dipping my toe into service plan servicing, makes me want to do it myself again 🙄

@@graemew7001 Many a person would say just that to me , I would point out the other unrelated stuff myself which I could see brewing, but only that which was actually really worthy of mention to the owner , you know like under there I spotted a water leak form your bottom hose for example , and there really was a leak for at the time , and then leave them to decide with no pressure , it's a bit of a balancing act but is just common sense really . most folk were glad of the good advise and just got it done anyway or fixed it themselves . which was great for all.
@@mrfairsthename7470 That's it in a nutshell, I put my car in for it's MOT in September and said whatever there is just fix it as I trust my garage completely, it cost me a tyre and a thermostat housing and MOT all for £130. He called me and said its not part of the test but your drive belts for the alternator etc have a chunk or two out of them, I said replace but nothing else was wrong. Now that's why I trust my garage and won't go anywhere else, independant and worth their weight in gold.
It is great news that Myrtle the Matiz is back on the road once more to help Ian out with the Hubnut Post & other jobs for a small car. I always support small Indipendant businesses as we need them more than the Big Companies.
£54.85 is the maximum MOT price. don't think there is a minimum. my local garage charges £30 . although that might be if you have a service at the same time.
I think your right on this one. There certainly isn’t a minimum of £39, I just got an Mot at the local National Tyres for £27.50. Passed without any additional work too, despite being a 12 year old Berlingo with 100k on it!
I actually did that not long ago my Rover 75 V6 had head gasket failure and this is quite rare for the V6 so there's always the chance of a cracked block so I just got a low mileage unit and had it replaced.
3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape will secure that mirror forever. It's a little expensive, but it's what the manufacturers use. I've used it in several applications, such as bonding wubg mirror glass to the plastic, holding trim like the door spears on, secured some mirror covers, and my LED underglow strips. It's all survived blizzards, and 40 degrees celcius, water, you name it. Great stuff

Totally agree on the Bosch wipers and the same applies to Michelins. I stopped buying them and now buy inexpensive Aslam wipers from Amazon which work very well and come in matched pairs in a package that include spare refill rubbers. As much as I agree with supporting local businesses, I still think that finding a trustworthy mechanic is even more important. I've been going to the same specialist for 25+ years. He's local to my office, but now that I work from home, I still drive the 60kms to his shop.
I stopped using Bosch wiper blades a few years ago for the reasons you describe Ian. Valeo are my preference these days. Great to see Myrtle back on the fleet.
Yay the froggy faced one is back. So glad to see Myrtle with a full MOT now. Betty can have a wee rest. I totally agree. There is no shame in farming out some jobs, both to help you keep stuff on the road and to support local business, especially if they have the facilities and tools that make things much easier
Nice li'l update. And YES you're not the only one who's had issues with those Bosch Wiper Blades. It's global thing it seems as I've had a few friends complain about them. They also seem to like ripping themselves apart especially on the ends.

Full respect for local garages and echo the supportive comments others have made about what do we expect from a team of professionals. Self-healing cars are also great! I've had some success dealing with juddery wipers by using an old but clean piece of towel soaked in WD40, rubbed onto the blades. It has cured my Bosch wiper woes.
That wiper noise sounds to me like the blade is 'pushing' when it gets to the end of its travel, rather than 'dragging' on its way up, flipping over and 'dragging' on its way down. That type of blade has to switch over at each end of its travel so it's never 'pushing', as that's what causes the noise. As someone who's been mechanicing on and off for over 50 years I've always done it by putting an adjustable spanner on the wiper arm and twisting it to get the blade to flip over at each end of the travel. If you try to do it by bending the blade itself it usually collapses and distorts. I've lost count of the number of times I've saved people buying new wiper blades by doing that.
@@glennpowell3444 They don't even make that noise on a dry screen if they're operating at the correct angle in both directions, they just slow the motor down with the extra friction but still aren't noisy. In the 60s we used to do it every day in the garage I worked in. The noise is cause by the rubber blade meeting the screen in the wrong orientation. Being wet or dry doesn't make any difference if they're set up correctly.
I totally agree with you as regards to farming cars out for repairs, thou I am looking forward to yourself and Miss Hubnut doing the engine change. There is a lot of progress achieved on the fleet as we all can see, and Mr Hubnut seems to be getting his mojo back after some testing times for him. 😁😃👏👍
Nice to see the Matiz back in action. I've had the same issue with Bosch wiper blades. After less than 18 months of fairly light use (I live in Kent, it doesn't rain much) they've started making the same noise.
Hi. I think the problem with your wipers is, the rubber blades have dried out. In the desert southwest of the USA, many people take the wipers off and store them from April to October, to save having to replace them twice per year. The quality of the blade compound has deteriorated significantly. I have had some success with both thoroughly cleaning the blades with glass cleaner, and also with very lightly paper sanding the blades. You’re going to have to replace them anyway, so ok to experiment with wiper engineering (my favorite) 🙂 Your part of the world is beautiful no matter what the weather is doing. Glad that Myrtle was properly worked on. Listen; I hated even doing basic service when I had a Chevrolet Chevette! Oil changes were an absolute pain, but I did them. Antifreeze, washer fluid, transmission. Checked them. But if it needed an exhaust, brakes (it always needed front discs and pads), etc., off it went to a Mechanic, I couldn't be bothered! It's above my level of comprehension, they do repairs all the time. Finding a GOOD MECHANIC, for me, being in rural New York State, is an absolute nightmare; I trust no one, most are ready to rip you off, and I was poor, so it was hideously expensive. Sometimes, like you just did, admit it is beyond your capacity and give it to an expert. Then, once returned, you can fall in love with them all over again. I also want to add that I agree, even though the day was misty, it certainly is gorgeous!
i've stepped away from Bosch wipers as i've found that they indeed don't really last that long. And the ones on my Mazda 6 have been squaking since new on speeds higher than 60mph! I now run Denso wiper blades on the whole fleet and i LOVE them! superb wipers! (the normal steel ones that is, their 'hybrid' wipers aren't that good!)
I quite appreciate you farming work out, the tinkering is fun and should just be tinkering, the road tests are the real Hubnut, along with your road trips.
Pro tip: buy some 3M VHB (very high bond) tape for things like the mirror, it's incredibly strong and seems to last forever even in the sun. It's very expensive but you only need a small amount and will find more uses for it.
Punting the Matiz along country lanes looks a barrel of laughs, true to your "Power, less is more" motto. Glad Myrtle is back and you will soon be spoiled for choice for which car to drive...

Love the little Daewoo, she’s sweet. Driving my Wife’s Mother’s 10 plate Suzuki Splash today. Nice little car. You know I wonder about the tick over on that little I think 3 cylinder engine. Stalled it twice at low revs while parking. Idle on a three cylinder always feels odd but it’s ticking over about 1200 rpm (dinky little Rev counter) No lights on indicator on the dash. Murky Sunday so had head lights on. Parked up in Aldi, Wife went in, got shopping and I sat 45 mins with lights on. Never opened door or I would have heard warning. Flat battery. We tried to push start (even in reverse) but dead as a door nail. Nice guy in a Vauxhall Mokka had some jump leads. Really helpful and several people helped push. The battery on that car is tiny. I’ve seen bigger motor bike batteries! The radiator is so slim it looks like a slice of toast. You know what though? I really like driving little Suzi! She’s sort of fun!
It's no surprise that you can't do all of the tinkering with thr amount of cars you have. Our old Corsa started to make a different noise the other day. Thought it was the water pump turned out it was the belt tensioner. That simple job took me all day and I wasn't filming it.

It s Fun pondering what causes electrical problems just after your car is fixed. But some times it's just old vehicles. Both of mine are in there 30's.
Bosch wipers have definitely gone rubbish, had to get some specific fit kits for a couple of vehicles and they are hard and chattery in my experience, I've had good results from the cheapie eBay ones, seem to last longer and run more quietly. Glad the matiz is all sorted and you're right about small garages, I used to use a village garage in a previous life and while not the cheapest the lead mechanic was a very talented guy you could absolutely trust with any car old or new.
Well done Myrtle on passing the MOT! It's great to see her back on the open road. If you find decent garage that does a good job in getting things fixed keep doing business with them. They might not be the cheapest but if they do a good job it's money well spent. For rear view mirror stickies I find the proper 3M ones work well. I tried various ones when my old Mondeo estate (A brilliant car of its day. I can't believe I called her old but it's a decade passed now) mirror came adrift a 3M eventually did the job. Sometimes the extra time and effort required to pull parts off an engine in the car is just not worth it, drop/lift/slide a replacement unit in may save a lot of time an heartache. So the throttle bodies/carbs, exhaust, gearbox has to drop that is the norm but you should maintain sanity and time in the long run. It might be worth fixing up the old engine on the bench, that could be an interesting video even if it's only for diagnostics.
Glad the Matiz is in good order again not a lot of money for all that work Hubnut has plenty on his plate nothing wrong with sending the fleet of for some repairs

Good that Myrtle has passed! After some headlamp polishing and fettling my Rover 75 Estate has passed along with some welding and other bits n bobs, however whenever i try to come up with a name i think back to Rita! Once again that 3 cylinder in that happy little blue car makes me want to buy a matiz when i have the space to do so, all the fun at legal speeds!
I remember I had a car many years ago where the interior mirror kept falling off. I managed to find a mirror in Halfords, or perhaps a motor accessory shop. It was so long ago I can't remember exactly what car it was, or the shop either. Anyway, to come to the point, the mirror was the type that fixed to the windscreen using a suction cup. It actually worked quite well apart from occasionally falling off and it did stick back again easily. Definitely the sort of bodge that would have been appreciated by Jalopy Magazine readers.
great video, cheers ian!....... i agree that bosch wipers arnt very good anymore, ive always used them, and they'd last 3 years easily, but now they must use cheaper rubber, so i now buy genuine honda ones for my jazz which seem really good.( p.s. try windolene original pink cream, works wonders on screens!!)
Also at the 14 min mark your Matiz sounded like a Ferrari 308 GT no joking Hubnut if you listen to the sound it is exaclty the same as an old Ferrari V8 i love it.
One other thing regarding wiper noise - while I'm generally not a fan of potions I can recommend RainX. Not only does it seem to make for smoother wiper operation you can get away with using the wipers less as rain beads up on the windscreen and slides down like it does after you've just used the wax at the carwash. I often find I can get away with intermittent wipe. When you live in Wales might be a worthwhile potion!

Try twisting the wiper arm so it's running parallel with the screen Ian, the blades chatter when they don't run true. Its trial and error what way to go, but you'll soon work it out.
I can suggest a really good glue for sticking that mirror on... Oh, on second thoughts, perhaps better farm that out too🙂 Glad to see Myrtle up and running again!

Wiper blade top tip: give them a good wipe/clean with WD40. Softens them up like new👍

it is about 125€ in Germany- every 2 years and classic cars do not get an exception
Think it's roughly about 80k to get an MOT bay all done. Though once done it's easier and more reliable work

I took my driver's license in a VW Golf mk.4 Turbo Diesel.. That torque made it easy to learn how to manage the clutch..

Hey Ian. I cure chattering wipers by grabbing the wiper arm near the blade with mole grips or adjustable spanner and putting a slight twist in the arm to lean the blade over at a different angle. It never fails to fix the problem, is quick and free!
Spot on! The blade isn't running parallel to the screen.
It sounds like the blades aren't flexing enough - maybe too cold in the UK for Bosch ;)

Glad you have Myrtle back on the road. That is an important lesson to learn when you own cars like the ones you have. What can I do and what do I have to farm out because you can't. Not a comment on your abilities, just a hard fact that saves a lot of headaches.
Farm more work out if it means getting more of the fleet on the road!!! Let's get driving and little adventures in the fleet. Mixed with simple tinkering wud be perfect for me.

Was an MOT tester for many years , and always that complaint about actually paying for it , always thought it was funny considering an MOT tester spends average 30 o 40 minutes , how much would the Dentist charge ? , and for most especially in the PCP age , it is the only time a clever bloke looks at it [ Yes we are clever and vastly underpaid , but depending where you go , quick fit maybe not but most are under appreciated clever folk doing a very good job ] .
Let's leave Kwikfit at the kerb where it belongs lol. I don't mind paying for an MOT because the peace of mind that it gives knowing the car is safe is worth more than money for me.
When I used to DIY my cars I would appreciate greatly the MOT testers ‘testing and checking’ of my amateur spannering, especially if I’d had to replace something major. Mind you my recent experience of dipping my toe into service plan servicing, makes me want to do it myself again 🙄
@@robc5955 That aspect too and plus supporting an independent business with people you have known for years and trust to look at your car and you know will tell you if anything might need looking at. Worth the small extra charge on top.
@@graemew7001 Many a person would say just that to me , I would point out the other unrelated stuff myself which I could see brewing, but only that which was actually really worthy of mention to the owner , you know like under there I spotted a water leak form your bottom hose for example , and there really was a leak for at the time , and then leave them to decide with no pressure , it's a bit of a balancing act but is just common sense really . most folk were glad of the good advise and just got it done anyway or fixed it themselves . which was great for all.
@@mrfairsthename7470 That's it in a nutshell, I put my car in for it's MOT in September and said whatever there is just fix it as I trust my garage completely, it cost me a tyre and a thermostat housing and MOT all for £130. He called me and said its not part of the test but your drive belts for the alternator etc have a chunk or two out of them, I said replace but nothing else was wrong. Now that's why I trust my garage and won't go anywhere else, independant and worth their weight in gold.
It is great news that Myrtle the Matiz is back on the road once more to help Ian out with the Hubnut Post & other jobs for a small car. I always support small Indipendant businesses as we need them more than the Big Companies.

£54.85 is the maximum MOT price. don't think there is a minimum. my local garage charges £30 . although that might be if you have a service at the same time.
I think your right on this one. There certainly isn’t a minimum of £39, I just got an Mot at the local National Tyres for £27.50. Passed without any additional work too, despite being a 12 year old Berlingo with 100k on it!
You’re right - my MoT was £5 at my local Volvo main dealer when booked with a service. I’ll gloss over the fact that the service was £450 😖
I actually did that not long ago my Rover 75 V6 had head gasket failure and this is quite rare for the V6 so there's always the chance of a cracked block so I just got a low mileage unit and had it replaced.
3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape will secure that mirror forever. It's a little expensive, but it's what the manufacturers use. I've used it in several applications, such as bonding wubg mirror glass to the plastic, holding trim like the door spears on, secured some mirror covers, and my LED underglow strips. It's all survived blizzards, and 40 degrees celcius, water, you name it. Great stuff

Totally agree on the Bosch wipers and the same applies to Michelins. I stopped buying them and now buy inexpensive Aslam wipers from Amazon which work very well and come in matched pairs in a package that include spare refill rubbers. As much as I agree with supporting local businesses, I still think that finding a trustworthy mechanic is even more important. I've been going to the same specialist for 25+ years. He's local to my office, but now that I work from home, I still drive the 60kms to his shop.
I stopped using Bosch wiper blades a few years ago for the reasons you describe Ian. Valeo are my preference these days.

I totally agree. There is no shame in farming out some jobs, both to help you keep stuff on the road and to support local business, especially if they have the facilities and tools that make things much easier

Nice li'l update. And YES you're not the only one who's had issues with those Bosch Wiper Blades. It's global thing it seems as I've had a few friends complain about them. They also seem to like ripping themselves apart especially on the ends.

I almost bought a Matiz once. The 3 cylinder was a joy to rev. Ended up with a Seicento Sporting.

Full respect for local garages and echo the supportive comments others have made about what do we expect from a team of professionals. Self-healing cars are also great! I've had some success dealing with juddery wipers by using an old but clean piece of towel soaked in WD40, rubbed onto the blades. It has cured my Bosch wiper woes.
That wiper noise sounds to me like the blade is 'pushing' when it gets to the end of its travel, rather than 'dragging' on its way up, flipping over and 'dragging' on its way down. That type of blade has to switch over at each end of its travel so it's never 'pushing', as that's what causes the noise. As someone who's been mechanicing on and off for over 50 years I've always done it by putting an adjustable spanner on the wiper arm and twisting it to get the blade to flip over at each end of the travel. If you try to do it by bending the blade itself it usually collapses and distorts. I've lost count of the number of times I've saved people buying new wiper blades by doing that.
@@glennpowell3444 They don't even make that noise on a dry screen if they're operating at the correct angle in both directions, they just slow the motor down with the extra friction but still aren't noisy. In the 60s we used to do it every day in the garage I worked in. The noise is cause by the rubber blade meeting the screen in the wrong orientation. Being wet or dry doesn't make any difference if they're set up correctly.

Nice to see the Matiz back in action. I've had the same issue with Bosch wiper blades. After less than 18 months of fairly light use (I live in Kent, it doesn't rain much) they've started making the same noise.
Hi. I think the problem with your wipers is, the rubber blades have dried out. In the desert southwest of the USA, many people take the wipers off and store them from April to October, to save having to replace them twice per year. The quality of the blade compound has deteriorated significantly. I have had some success with both thoroughly cleaning the blades with glass cleaner, and also with very lightly paper sanding the blades. You’re going to have to replace them anyway, so ok to experiment with wiper engineering (my favorite) 🙂 Your part of the world is beautiful no matter what the weather is doing. Listen; I hated even doing basic service when I had a Chevrolet Chevette! Oil changes were an absolute pain, but I did them. Antifreeze, washer fluid, transmission. Checked them. But if it needed an exhaust, brakes (it always needed front discs and pads), etc., off it went to a Mechanic, I couldn't be bothered! It's above my level of comprehension, they do repairs all the time. Finding a GOOD MECHANIC, for me, being in rural New York State, is an absolute nightmare; I trust no one, most are ready to rip you off, and I was poor, so it was hideously expensive. Sometimes, like you just did, admit it is beyond your capacity and give it to an expert. Then, once returned, you can fall in love with them all over again.
I also want to add that I agree, even though the day was misty, it certainly is gorgeous!
i've stepped away from Bosch wipers as i've found that they indeed don't really last that long. And the ones on my Mazda 6 have been squaking since new on speeds higher than 60mph! I now run Denso wiper blades on the whole fleet and i LOVE them! superb wipers! (the normal steel ones that is, their 'hybrid' wipers aren't that good!)

Pro tip: buy some 3M VHB (very high bond) tape for things like the mirror, it's incredibly strong and seems to last forever even in the sun. It's very expensive but you only need a small amount and will find more uses for it.

I have noticed Bosch wipes do not now last has long has you would expect from a top company. The are some drivers out there who I think if they put the cars lights on the extra electric they use is going to go on the home bill
Love the little Daewoo, she’s sweet. Driving my Wife’s Mother’s 10 plate Suzuki Splash today. Nice little car. You know I wonder about the tick over on that little I think 3 cylinder engine. Stalled it twice at low revs while parking. Idle on a three cylinder always feels odd but it’s ticking over about 1200 rpm (dinky little Rev counter) No lights on indicator on the dash. Murky Sunday so had head lights on. Parked up in Aldi, Wife went in, got shopping and I sat 45 mins with lights on. Never opened door or I would have heard warning. Flat battery. We tried to push start (even in reverse) but dead as a door nail. Nice guy in a Vauxhall Mokka had some jump leads. Really helpful and several people helped push. The battery on that car is tiny. I’ve seen bigger motor bike batteries! The radiator is so slim it looks like a slice of toast. You know what though? I really like driving little Suzi! She’s sort of fun!
I don't know if I'm jealous or thankful, seeing your roads that your doing 60 on, are similar to the roads we do 35 to 45 on, in the states🤯

It's no surprise that you can't do all of the tinkering with thr amount of cars you have. Our old Corsa started to make a different noise the other day. Thought it was the water pump turned out it was the belt tensioner. That simple job took me all day and I wasn't filming it.

It s Fun pondering what causes electrical problems just after your car is fixed. But some times it's just old vehicles. Both of mine are in there 30's.

Bosch wipers have definitely gone rubbish, had to get some specific fit kits for a couple of vehicles and they are hard and chattery in my experience, I've had good results from the cheapie eBay ones, seem to last longer and run more quietly. Glad the matiz is all sorted and you're right about small garages, I used to use a village garage in a previous life and while not the cheapest the lead mechanic was a very talented guy you could absolutely trust with any car old or new.
Well done Myrtle on passing the MOT! It's great to see her back on the open road. If you find decent garage that does a good job in getting things fixed keep doing business with them. They might not be the cheapest but if they do a good job it's money well spent. For rear view mirror stickies I find the proper 3M ones work well. I tried various ones when my old Mondeo estate (A brilliant car of its day. I can't believe I called her old but it's a decade passed now) mirror came adrift a 3M eventually did the job.
Sometimes the extra time and effort required to pull parts off an engine in the car is just not worth it, drop/lift/slide a replacement unit in may save a lot of time an heartache. So the throttle bodies/carbs, exhaust, gearbox has to drop that is the norm but you should maintain sanity and time in the long run. It might be worth fixing up the old engine on the bench, that could be an interesting video even if it's only for diagnostics.
Glad the Matiz is in good order again not a lot of money for all that work Hubnut has plenty on his plate nothing wrong with sending the fleet of for some repairs

Good that Myrtle has passed! After some headlamp polishing and fettling my Rover 75 Estate has passed along with some welding and other bits n bobs, however whenever i try to come up with a name i think back to Rita! Once again that 3 cylinder in that happy little blue car makes me want to buy a matiz when i have the space to do so, all the fun at legal speeds!

I remember I had a car many years ago where the interior mirror kept falling off. I managed to find a mirror in Halfords, or perhaps a motor accessory shop. It was so long ago I can't remember exactly what car it was, or the shop either.
Anyway, to come to the point, the mirror was the type that fixed to the windscreen using a suction cup. It actually worked quite well apart from occasionally falling off and it did stick back again easily. Definitely the sort of bodge that would have been appreciated by Jalopy Magazine readers.
great video, cheers ian!....... i agree that bosch wipers arnt very good anymore, ive always used them, and they'd last 3 years easily, but now they must use cheaper rubber, so i now buy genuine honda ones for my jazz which seem really good.( p.s. try windolene original pink cream, works wonders on screens!!)
Also at the 14 min mark your Matiz sounded like a Ferrari 308 GT no joking Hubnut if you listen to the sound it is exaclty the same as an old Ferrari V8 i love it.
One other thing regarding wiper noise - while I'm generally not a fan of potions I can recommend RainX. Not only does it seem to make for smoother wiper operation you can get away with using the wipers less as rain beads up on the windscreen and slides down like it does after you've just used the wax at the carwash. I often find I can get away with intermittent wipe. When you live in Wales might be a worthwhile potion!

Try twisting the wiper arm so it's running parallel with the screen Ian, the blades chatter when they don't run true. Its trial and error what way to go, but you'll soon work it out.
I wipe my Bosch wiper blades all the time, but I agree, they don't seem to last anymore and I replace mine twice a year now.
