750 miles in a matiz? You must have an arse like leather. 350 miles in a focus was enough for me lol. Great video as usual. Thank you for entertaining us 👍
You do a great public service to all of us in the US in these times. Just listening, and enjoying the countryside (thanks for the lovely train!) brings my BP down.....
I had one of these as my first car 10 years ago, I always thought from every angle apart from the front they were acceptable looking. I managed 94mph once with 5 adults in, and also bodged some extra speakers on the parcel shelf. I can't remember exactly why I got rid of it, I do remember driving home one day watching my fuel gauge drop alarmingly quickly, turned out the fuel pipe came off the filter, lost over half a tank of dinosaur juice that day.
side note, the farm straddled by the M62 is known to the trucking fraternity as 'The little house on the prairie' and comes under no UK jurisdiction, like The Vatican. Ok I made the last bit up.
If you saw the documentary about the M62 construction the farm is there for no other reason than the boggy land up there wouldn't support two three lane carriageways side by side so it was decided to terrace them meaning the farm was left in the middle. The farmer got double glazing but other than that had to put up with it. Its not because he was stubborn and wouldn't move as per folklore.
I spent 3yrs volunteering on the Llanngollen Railway when I was 14,15 & 16. I am now 57. Lots of hard work laying track with a big hammer. I was young & could swing all day... read into that what you will. Great trip, great vlog.😁
Thank you for taking us along on your road trip; nice especially to revisit Embsay station with you, and then Lincoln, which is quite a place to see. In my repping days in my black and white Skoda Favorit GLXi Estate, I used to visit the city every May for a decade, and always managed to find an hour or two to mooch around. Seing the magnificent cathedral, the Steep Hill high street, past the railway station(s) and crossings that used to jam up the town completely all the time, and then down to a fascinating little Reliant dealer off the south end of the High Street that was still selling the last gasp new Reliant models into the 90s. Far too expensive for me - dearer than many small new 4 wheeled cars. But always lots of interesting oddities in for service or repair in their back yard.
Lincoln Cathedral was a reference point for bomber pilots in WW2. There were many Lancaster ( and other ) bomber squadrons based in the flat lands of Lincolnshire and many returning in the grey light of dawn often battle damaged Lincoln Cathedral was a welcome sight and a handy datum point to plot a course for the last leg home........they must have loved the sight of the tower coming out of the gloom.
Thanks HubNutted, you had a nice and relaxed tone in this video. Just did 3 hrs in my own Xantia today and have had a excuse to raise the suspension once. Good day.
Sounds like you stayed at Fawlty Towers Lol. Love that sound of steam train as it's moves off I could almost smell the coal! Clacton use to a great place as a teen back in the 80s my Nan lived there once, many a happy hour spent in the amusements.
Audi 100. One of my Uncle's had one in the 80's, when I was little. My folks had an Austin Maxi at the time. Anyway, the Audi had electric windows - I was utterly utterly amazed by them.
I do like the rort of a bloodthirsty triple. Admittedly, my love of triples was borne from big Laverdas, but as you say, you can't have everything! Keep it up! Love your work!
Great video sir. By the way, the sound coming from 5643 before it left the station was not the blower, but the vacuum ejector creating the brake necessary in order to move the train. To apply the brakes, you destroy the vacuum
I'm so pleased it's not only me that when going up a high-rise platform or building, I point out my car in the car park. I did this very thing in York at the Clifford's Tower. Great you got to come to the top of Steep Hill in Lincoln. The building there are lovely. Pleased you got to come to my home town.
Heh, good to see my part of the world on a Hubnut video! (I grew up in Kidderminster, but have lived in Leeds for 20 years now). That little farm on the 62 tells me I"m almost home. Apparently the story about the owner refusing to sell in the 1970s is an urban myth; the carriageways were always intended to pass around it for engineering reasons. Great views of the Leeds skyline as you drop down from the west too. I've never been on the Bolton Abbey steam railway, but there"s another one in Keighley (just outside Bradford) that my late wife and I visited a few times. Otley is lovely but (as you found out) a very busy little place. Expensive too, like all of North Leeds. It does however have Otley Chevin, a steep ridge above the town that offers great views of the airport (if you're into planespotting) and the Royalty, a great little pub that feels like it's in the middle of nowhere (if you're lacking the time for the full Tan Hill run - I remember doing the 'raid' on that a few years back with a couple of 2CV owning friends :) ) Fond memories of visiting a friend at Lincoln Uni. Very pretty place, makes up for the rest of Lincolnshire. (Worcestershire, Yorkshire... I'm used to places with hills I'm afraid!) I too love faded seaside resorts in winter, though maybe not ones in Essex :o It's a long time since I saw a Matiz in the wild. I think they all broke and got thrown away :( There was a dead Chevy-badged one on a driveway on my street for a few years, with flat tyres and covered in moss, but it exited on a low loader a couple of summers ago. It doesn't get much more 90s than that seat fabric :) An American friend of ours (my late wife was originally from Boston MA) has a Chevy Aveo, the US equivalent of the Matiz. I didn't realise they still made such basic, no-frills cars. 3 doors, 4 gears, manual windows, no tach, with two 20-odd stone blokes in it, doing 80 on I-93 up to New Hampshire in a raging blizzard on New Year's Eve. And we somehow lived to tell the tale :)
What a awesome video,750 miles in Myrtle, you certainly get around, that Audi was very nice, cant wait for the next video of HubNut to see what your driving next.
I like this kind of thing. In 2004 I did exactly 500 miles in one day in a 1989 Seat Ibiza Special with a 903cc engine, and loved every minute of it. The car was given to me as scrap, I basically had to replace the dead sludge-filled engine and totally rotten exhaust, and free off the seized brakes. The trip was from Newark to Exeter and back, because I sold a load of 1980s Apple Macs to a cousin of Stewart Lee.
Glad you liked your trip to the railway, I live 20 miles from there on the Red Rose side of the Lancashire /Yorkshire border and you don't realise how stunning it is until you see it on film. That part of the A59 is a favourite for money making mobile speed cameras and the starting bit from the roundabout near Embsay is 50 mph although it's 60mph where you commented. Reasons for the car flashing you: 1/ It couldn't really judge your speed if its coming towards you 2/ People in the North are friendly and help each other out 😉
Hi Ian,yes I got in first today good video, shame it rained arfter polishing it and all so the cup holder, the idle may just be that it's cold, loved the steam train, Lincoln looks lovely can't wait to see the p6 as I got one, safe journey,
Great episode Ian, on your map in block 38 where it says Stranraer I lived under the 'R', that's why we moved, not allot of sunlight comes passed a whackin big 'R' in the sky and Lincoln Cathedral is spectacular (took my wife through there on our honeymoon on our way to Bangor Wales. I love the history of the cathedral and how many times Mother Nature has tried to knock it down, hmmmm.
Saw a car today that you would love Ian. Late 1980s Citroën Oltcit in glorious orangy red. Not sure they were ever officially sold here, we just got the Visa, but this has obviously made it over here and looks to be well cared for. Didn't get chance to talk with the owner sadly, but just seeing the car brightened up an otherwise very ordinary day. Would love to see you review one if ever you get the opportunity. Probably very rare though I imagine, but you never know.
Ace! There are two or three over here. Sadly, one of them caught fire and needs a fair dose of repair. Not easy when bits were never plentiful. Same door mirrors as the Dacia...
I am surprised I am saying this, but I am rather liking the Matiz! :-P I have never been that keen on them, and the headlights and bonnet remind me of a frog! The sound of the engine when you are hooning around the country lanes, reminds me of the sound my little 3 cylinder Corsa makes when doing the same thing! :-) Nice to see a bit of Lincoln in your video too. I visit Lincoln several times a year and always enjoy the climb up Steep Hill to the cathedral. There's a very interesting free museum just a bit further up which I always visit. They do nice big mugs of tea there too and a reasonable price! ;-) I was meant to be going to Lincoln this month, but due to various reasons, I couldn't go, so it's nice to just see it on film! :-) Keep up the great videos, always enjoy seeing your adventures in different cars and locations! :-D Send my love to the Perodua! :-P
Was lovely for you to mention the farm on your trip up my kneck of the woods. Next door happensd to get himself a lovely little matiz in none other then purple. Shame it is a 2001 reg however. I have to say though it is a great little car. Not as good as my little regal. Really great to see such beautiful train. Was wondering at one point was you going to get aboard the train carnage and go on a short trip. Keep the videos coming.
Hello from Otley - you came through on the dy we hosted the folk festival and the national town cryer competition (yes, really!). You narrowly missed me at the lights - i think i came through on a Guzzi about five minutes later; who knows I might have passed you on the way up the dale. We have a variery of super railways up here, including the E&BR, the Keighley & worth valley and some interesting miniature railways too. I lived in lampeter for many years and used to travel between lampeter and Yorkshire on a regular basis - a good run over the llangurig road and probably ast the end of your drive as i headed over the back road towards pontrhyfendegaid (sp?). There were a lot of us restoring bikes thereabouts - i was in Llandewi brefi lately. Ah.... times past....
Something I noticed, how redundant a seatbelt is in a Matiz, bearing in mind how short the bonnet is, if the crash is hard enough for a seabelt to be effective, you'd be brown bread anyway because you'd be crushed to death
0:39 I know that junction! Many years ago I used to take the B4343 from there to Rhydlewis when I wanted to go the fun way back from Aberystwyth....at least I thought it was the fun way.
Silly question. I have probably stared at your seat fabric longer than you have because I have watched all your Matiz videos. Do you know who inspired the design? I hope that car gets preserved.
Fair enough ...Ian,, talking about hearse,s...my dad had a austin A60...hearse,,that doubled up as a builders van........got it for not much money in the mid 70s....finally scrapping it around 83....and then buying an austin ambassador...one of the last I think...nice car.....
No...Nikki.....was an A reg...light blue........had it til...89/90...then sold it to my uncle ...who had it around 6 months....unfortunately written off...when hit from behind at a set of traffic lights...🤨...(uncle Dave was ok......🙂.
The little Matiz has done it again. In for a bit of TLC and she's good again. Wonder what you eat in NL, since we got loads of junk food here. In the supermarkets 50% of the stuff there has nothing to do with food, it is just utter crap. As for a nice location to photograph cars, check out Zuid-Limburg (southern Limburg) in the Maastricht Valkenburg area. A bit hilly (no mountains) some cool vistas.
I think a trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway would have been nice....its the line used in the classic film The Railway Children, we visited years ago and did our own version of that famous scene with Iain Cuthbertson and the very lovely Jenny Agutter Freindly traveller people? you must get a different bunch in mid Wales to the ones we get in North Wales.
're your comment Ian,Reguarding vauxhall vectras,,,I own 2 of them...a vxr..and a gsi...looked after...serviced regularly..great cars...thought it was only Clarkson,that had a problem with vauxhall....!..but each to their own....keep up the good work..
I go to the pub at the entrance to the railway station for family/mongol hoard gatherings but alas can never get to look at the station....looks more impressive than the approach to it so next time I shall have a ganders.....
Clacton upon sea looks fairly dreary. Although it must be said, not as bad as Skegness! I’m not sure exactly what seaside town Morrissey had in mind when he sang “this is the coastal town that they forgot to close down” but I think Skegness fits quite well
You managed to avoid Leeds in your travels. Well done. I used to work in Leeds everyday, but the place has changed too much for my liking. If your in for a good view of Yorkshire. Go up Holme Moss which is on A6024 Woodhead Road heading south from Holmfirth. Good view looking north across towards Emley Moor TV mast.
It's reputed that you can see east and west coasts from the top of Emley Moor transmitter. You can certainly see York Minster from the top of Holme Moss on a clear day. Re. hearses, I always thought the Allegro estate looked like a hearse for a dog.
Yeah - I have only gone and done it.... the fabulously decrepit Scenic somehow got us on holiday and back without incident but I don't know how so it is off to the scrapper in the sky. This weekend I collect my Matiz. Yes its a Chevrolet but...get this....10 years old one owner with 11k miles up !!
A Rover P6 is a far more suitable car to drive for 750 mls. across the UK in order to avoid build and renovation activities at home. Allthough the fuel economy of a Deawoo Matiz is far better. AD 1996 I drove from Overijssel to Hoek van Holland and Harwich to Blair Atholl and back. But that was in a Mercedes 220D 1970, nicknamed ''Moby Dick'' (the ancient white whale), and with a wife and 3 kids. Great trip. Never been to Wales, but from 1999 to 2005 we rented a holliday house, literally a stone throw from Hadrians Wall every year for 3 weeks in august. Because we fell in love with Lancashire and the North of the UK.
Perhaps check the plugs and leads for moisture seeing as its very wet and you got a lumpy myrtle, the rocker cover gasket could be leaking oil into the pots. My mother's rover 45 has a miss when it's abit wet though. Also 500 miles in that must be quite hard being quite unrefined. I hated 200 miles in my mk4 golf 1.4 lol.
Great video Ian. If you like steam trains, when you are in London / Essex look us up at the Epping Ongar railway where we also run classic London buses from the 50s and have “specials weekends” including classic car shows. You would have a whale of a time, come along and do a video. Love the Matiz. Do you still have the Nippa, you haven’t mentioned it lately?
Awesome video really. Highlights?? Audi 100 which was absolutely gorgeous. You never see them in that great condition anymore in the US. Here they were called the Audi 5000S. Second, I couldn't stop laughing at the footage of Hubnut's face when he was at that seaside resort(offseason, Clacton i think). You could see he was completely horrified and didn't want to be in that town for another minute. Lol. Third, poor ole Myrtle with her bleached out roof looking sad. All in all, Wales is just a beautiful country. I really must visit there before i die.
This just have been a challenging journey! I remember regularly doing a 60 mile trip with my Mk4 Fiesta and found that crippling - I usually had to take a break half-way. Maybe old Fords just had particularly crap seats?
Awesome audi 1000 you see in Holland. My dad in the 80's and a Audi 80 Ls in gray, one night he park I up outside his flat and someone broke into the car and stole his radio!
Hey Ian - sorry, this is unrelated to the video (which I just enjoyed watching). But your Invacar project (and the field full of abandoned vehicles) prompted a question in my mind about what happened to all of the electric milk floats. The fleet has long since vanished from roads in my area, but there must have been dozens of them in this region alone. Are many of these, too, laid up forlornly somewhere? So many electric engines gone to waste.
Llangurig! now when you are there you know you have a LONG way to go - ANYWHERE. A GWR loco in Yorkshire (haha). PS: my son has got an A180 Diesel Merc now. Hmmm! everyone to their own choice I suppose, but the Matiz looks more comfortable :)
You need to hit Swanage , we have everything you described , a tragic seaside town out of season, a steam railway, heck we even have ice cream made by the Fortes dynasty and world class Swanage chocolate, and a classic car club.....Whadayawaiting for?
Modern cars don’t normally rely on the cable for idle. It should have slack to allow the ecu to control the idle via idle control. The cable gets hot and cold, expands and contracts. May explain your idle issues.
89000 miles is barely mid-life for the Matiz. In my country (Rromanistania) they have been used as Taxis and driven into the ground. I've seen Matizes with 450 thousand kilomentres on the odo. I don't know exactly how many miles that is in His Majesty's Imperial Klingonese, but I bet it's OVER 9000!!!. :) Of course, they had more holes in the bodywork than a Swiss cheesegrater (I'm not sure that's a proper enunciation or just a pun...), but they kept soldiering on, kept together by spiders' webs, driver's curses and passengers' prayers... All in all, an awesome little car, cooler than the Fiat 500, IMHO. I actually like the Tico even more, if that makes any sense.
They don't call it 'Steep Hill' in Lincoln for nothing! 3rd largest Cathedral in the U.K. Quite a pleasant county capital but under represented on the tourist trail because of the deeply insular nature of Lincolnites. Driving on Lincolnshires roads is much more open & lighter on traffic which is a welcome relief from the West Midlands or West Yorkshire. Harrogate is frankly stunning if very middle class, this would have been the British Vichy had German invaded & occupied in WW2. No visit to Harrogate is complete without a visit to Beatty's tea rooms or the Pump House Museum. I love a good road trip :).
When on a family road trip my kids always play spot the broken down car. When totaling up Vauxhall always win easily followed by Mercedes. The Zafira is the most spotted. :)
Loads of old Zafiras still about and are usually owned by Mums on a budget who never dare open the bonnet- let alone take it for a service ..no excuses for Mercedes though with all the hype that goes with them.
Lot's of mum's on a budget also own cheap Picasso's that don't break down. The MK1 was/is a brilliant car with astonishing durability. You are right on Mercedes though. Absolute rubbish. (modern ones not the older models).
Living in the US it's always nice to see the charm of Olde England ,especially the smaller towns and villages.Nice job!
I love these old Matiz's. Cheerful looking little fellows.
This might be my favorite video of yours, I keep coming back to it. Such a lovely time, thank you for this
I'm falling in love with the little Matiz, what a great car and a wonderful growl to the engine note.
It's a nice car
Love this. Completely understand now why she's a keeper. Very envious of the road trip. You've kept this style of content while adding so much more.

That is a big "Roadtrip" for the little Matiz, a long distance drive always solves small motor problems.
The sound that Matiz makes is amazing!
side note, the farm straddled by the M62 is known to the trucking fraternity as 'The little house on the prairie' and comes under no UK jurisdiction, like The Vatican.

What a great video Ian. Loved the footage of the towns and loving the Matiz. Hmm quite tempted actually :)
Look at that lovely lamp........ Best line ever in a video
Audi 100. One of my Uncle's had one in the 80's, when I was little. My folks had an Austin Maxi at the time. Anyway, the Audi had electric windows - I was utterly utterly amazed by them.
Ive only driven over the M62 summit once in a blizzard back in april. When i got to Manchester it was raining and a few degrees warmer.

I love these long trips were your tool box only has two crossed fingers in it your a brave man IAN and i salute you
Yeah, and he doesn't have a fancy SUV back-up car full of hot drinks and mechanics like some youtuber's road trips!
Lovely video Ian. I’m really impressed with Myrtle and the mileage you’ve covered in her on this trip. Looking forward to the P6 video.
Love these old Matiz cars the engines are fun because they go like a little rally car lol
Scenery much more interesting than the car. Beautiful buildings and countryside. Love the trains.
Thanks for your vlog Richard uk Coventry England take care love cars and trains GT fun thankyou hubnut

There were a lot of us restoring bikes thereabouts - i was in Llandewi brefi lately. Ah.... times past....
We had 9 yrs in a Cobalt SE so this brings back memories
Something I noticed, how redundant a seatbelt is in a Matiz, bearing in mind how short the bonnet is, if the crash is hard enough for a seabelt to be effective, you'd be brown bread anyway because you'd be crushed to death
It's ok. The DUAL AIRBAGS will save me! Compared to my 2CV and Invacar, the Matiz is a bleedin' Volvo.
HubNut haha I love the 2cv. I'll likely never experience the wonder of driving one either. Keep up the great videos
No idea. Giugiaro did the outside. No idea if that extended to the inside.
You was in my neck of the woods West Yorkshire. I used to have a friend that lived in Otley I used to drive there to visit him.
Fair enough ...Ian,, talking about hearse,s...my dad had a austin A60...hearse,,that doubled up as a builders van........got it for not much money in the mid 70s....finally scrapping it around 83....and then buying an austin ambassador...one of the last I think...nice car.....
Was it an Austin Ambassador Y reg?
No...Nikki.....was an A reg...light blue........had it til...89/90...then sold it to my uncle ...who had it around 6 months....unfortunately written off...when hit from behind at a set of traffic lights...🤨...(uncle Dave was ok......🙂.
I really enjoyed this!
We ate sausage rolls (I think) and bemoaned the lack of a proper cup of tea.
Of all the times I've been through Embsay in my life travelling between Lancashire and Co. Durham, I never once got to see the trains... :(
I think a trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway would have been nice....its the line used in the classic film The Railway Children, we visited years ago and did our own version of that famous scene with Iain Cuthbertson and the very lovely Jenny Agutter
Freindly traveller people? you must get a different bunch in mid Wales to the ones we get in North Wales.
If you went to Goathland where Heartbeat was filmed you would enjoy that very much
Wow, you have had some adventures this year!
The black car at the hotel in Clacton is a 1939 plymouth 4 door sedan
Shows what I know about pre-war American cars. Sod all!
HubNut as its Plymouth its very similar to a chrysler
Love your work, thanks for your efforts:-)
For a moment I thought you were going home to Mrs Hubnut in the four wheel trailer as it was only working vehicle left. ;-))
I know that bit of the A1(M) only too well... thought of you today when a beige-ish Peugeot 309GE pulled up alongside me.
're your comment Ian,Reguarding vauxhall vectras,,,I own 2 of them...a vxr..and a gsi...looked after...serviced regularly..great cars...thought it was only Clarkson,that had a problem with vauxhall....!..but each to their own....keep up the good work..
I'm not necessarily anti-Vectra, but a hearse should be something a bit special. I'm not a fan of the Saab-based ones either. Or Mondeos. Yuck.
Love The matiz great engine sound and fun to drive I got 94 Mph out on a public test track what have you seen on the speedo?
I once saw 100mph during my first ownership. The rev limited kicked in at that point. It was down a very steep hill...
The quiet pause after friendly traveler people was deafening
All good things
Nice vid Mr. HubNut :) Hope the house overhaul is progressing well.
Not progressing much at all sadly!
Hey, 2200 kilometers without stop in a Matiz, back in 2015, drove it from Copenhagen to Romania.
There is another steam railway around 14 miles from here. The Keighley and Worth Valley railway
I have a full service kit for the Matiz. Just haven't had time to fit any of it!
@@HubNut it would make a good video when you do get around to it, I think myrtle would be thankful :)
Thanks. Sounds a great place! Yes, Nippa still on the fleet. Mrs HubNut's daily and it's been pretty busy lately.
Wasn't that bad. By the end of it, I could get out of the car without assistance of an engine crane.
Ian, you also could've visited the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway which was featured in "The Railway Children".
I'm sure I'll be in Yorkshire again at some point. I'll add it to the list!
Alas, many were scrapped. There are quite a few in preservation at the Wythall Transport Museum.
Thank you - that's very sad to hear, but I'm glad some have survived.
Great undertake at 4.28. The white Mini driver deserved it 😀
Great work!
Looking forward to the P6 video - my dad had a 2000TC in the 80s
my starters was just aboot welded... glad i got it fixed
Ah the M62 , the turn off to my office is just down the hill on the westbound side.
Llangurig! now when you are there you know you have a LONG way to go - ANYWHERE.
Full bonding with the Matiz accomplished.
Hay A sign like the one in the tag phono would make a great prop mate
Fantastic Ian I like steam trains too 😊
So do I, have a look at my channel if you like them (several uploads made from passing steamtrains on it)..
Modern cars don’t normally rely on the cable for idle. It should have slack to allow the ecu to control the idle via idle control. The cable gets hot and cold, expands and contracts. May explain your idle issues.
Could do, but I don't think the car is controlling its idle very well.
16:54 Ahh the Wig And Mitre. Spend many an hour partaking of their wares after the long climb up Steep Hill (yes it is)
Towncryer probably just the local Witherspoons 🍺
We had two a W reg 800cc and an 04 1000cc. Still got a new exhaust lying in my lock up for the 800.
Ha! Just replaced the entire exhaust on Myrtle the Matiz...
Omg you were about 7 miles from us when you were 4 from Spalding. Waving lol
Of course, they had more holes in the bodywork than a Swiss cheesegrater (I'm not sure that's a proper enunciation or just a pun...), but they kept soldiering on, kept together by spiders' webs, driver's curses and passengers' prayers...
I got my hand stung by a wasp on the steam train railway bridge when I was a kid.
