I love their understated nature. No over acting or drama. Just grinding it out. Getting it done. No product promotion too which is a delight on UA-cam. Beautiful filming edit and music adds to the atmosphere. Well done chaps! Massive respect.
Your best video... ever. Huge respect to you and Mike for this one. I can't imagine the suffering you had to endure but you stuck at it, filmed it all, and still finished 2nd..... You should be very proud of yourself...
Message for Martijn: - 20 minutes in - if you're feeling empty after drinking electrolyte drink then I'd suggest you need more carbohydrates (sugar). Conversely, when Mikey puked he probably had heat stroke and too much carbohydrate...too much sugar will prevent absorption through the gut wall = dehydrated. It's all about the osmotic potential of your gut and it's absorption rate. Like Natty Durian says - carb the F up and drink more water. Awesome adventure. Love your work.
Congrats for your race and even more for your video. It really makes justice of what Badlands really is. The best video I've seen to date about Badlands. I was there, P.13 investing 68hours and my experience was more or less like yours. First ultradistance event for me, hard as hell sometimes because of hot weather, but enjoying a lot most of the time. Congrats again!
Wow… just wow. Been a fan for a while. Often find myself sparked to get out on a ride, or just be more observant, after watching these. But this… wow. Congrats on 2nd place (first race like this, sheesh)! That heat looked brutal. The views amazing. Thanks for taking us along. And giving a few of us alternative choices to cycling (🎣 indeed sounds great).
Probably one of my favourite videos of yours to date, so much so I watched it twice. You guys are made of strong stuff and your tenacity to see it through is inspiring.
Now that is a proper gravel race. I can’t fathom riding 170km in that terrain, let alone doing it having ridden three days straight before that. You people are amazing.
Amazing! congrats guys! What a performance and you kept on filming...I admire your composure, control and team spirit you apparently succeded in keeping all the way long... 💪 Impressive and inspiring.
RESPECT...RESPECT...RESPECT...well done 👏 gentlemen! Thanks for sharing the experience with this vlog. Really brave to stick it out and come through 2nd!
Wow! Whaaat a great film! Great pictures! Enjoyed every minute. Incredible achievement to finish Badlands but filming it simultaneously in such a cinematic way is just awesome. Best Badlands film I have seen so far and one of the best things here on the channel.
@ what age wud u think ur too old? I’m 57 & just started competing in races, bike touring & bikepacking! Absolutely loving every minute of it! Also loving backpacking too, anything outside works for me! Never too old but always tread lightly, trek hard & b Careful!💕
@@cherylmacklin3578 Add another 12 years to your age and that's where I am. Enjoy every moment while you can, eventually you find things don't work so well. I still really enjoy local road and gravel, which is pretty easy around here.
Congrats to you and Mike. I want to repeat what I read in some comments. This is your best video ... It's really great. You finished an incredible hard race and have the ability and courage not to film just the race and landscape - you transported your emotions about the challenge, the frustration and change to happiness, the question why am I doing this ... and a lot more ... That's why I like your channel and the way you doing it ... My favourite scene's: Mike's shower at the beach and when he said ... He's looking forward to the next km, where are more small village's where he can buy more ice ... I think Mike's most favorite cycling nutrition is ICE .... Great job guys ... Respect
Many have said it before but this was definitely your best video. Epic race, epic scenery, an epic level of endurance on your parts, epic editing, and, apparently, epic caffeine gum. Congratulations guys!!!
Next level film and ride for the channel no question. Stunning scenery, great mates, tough as balls and what a result for you both..!! Love Mikey's moustache by the way. Respect to you both.
¡¡¡Congratulations finishers!!! Best video about Badlands with real human feelings. I´ve been searching videos about Badlans and yours is unique and of course the best.
Well done Martijn and Mike, I've ridden ultras, I live in Australia I totally get that heat where you can't cool down, irs not good. Loved the film, you guys rock.
Great job, Guys. I thought this was THE ride which broke Martijn and Mike but NO, you finished in second, chapeau! Mike's face was hilarious when he bit into his cheese and ham boterham! LOL! Another excellent video, another excellent soundtrack. See you back at Fernwee channel.
Staggering! Effort, production, finishing position, place.. all of your content is great, but that was in a class of its own. Chapeau! A debrief vlog, when you have the time would be cool too...
Thanks for sharing that amazing adventure. So impressive that you both rode thru the pain and suffering. I can see why it’s called the Badlands! Second place was awesome.
I have experienced the problem of dehydration (20:12) too. Some people lose much more sodium than others. Generally, electrolyte tablets will work for me but on a day like this, I would just consume some extra salt, because under so much heat and dry air, the tablets alone may be insufficient. If you see white rings on your dark clothing, that's a sign of a lot of salt (Na+) loss. When you add salt, your body can retain more of the water you drink. Disorientation and vomiting are signs of dehydration and should be addressed quickly.
@@Fernwee When it's hot I also have to add extra salt. A nice solution is to eat salmiac balls during the ride, as an additive to your nutrition and isotonis drinks. For me this is one of the best solutions. You can also take some bouillon sticks with you for the breaks on places where they serve hot water
Congratulations for finishing 2nd place. I think, It was the right decision to start together with Mike, so you could boost the moral to each other. Amazing how Mike recover and regain his energy. Luckily no punctures or any other mechanical issues.
One of the best ultra distance race videos i've seen. Subscribing based on this video alone. Next year I'm going to do the RAT 1000, a thousand mile race across Texas here in the USA. You've inspired me.
Wow! Finally watched this as I have had it in my queue for awhile now. Congratulations on 2nd place! There were moments when both of you looked completely broken. Looking forward to more videos from Rwanda now!
Top effort and kudos for filming it all. It's a beautiful thing, getting acquainted with the darkest place of your mind. I hope you feel the video did it justice because that looks like a brutal race! Would love to see how the bikes were set up and hear all the nerdy stuff
hey guys : ) that was emotional never give up great to see you battle through and also your appreciation of the shear beauty of this planet were on : )
An excellent ride! You both deserve a good rest after that. Fantastic shots of the Spanish countryside. Very well done. Hope you have recovered by now.
What an adventure!! Thanks to you guys i bought a gravelbike and got inspiration to make adventures as well! Dont forget to enjoy what you achieved :) Greetings from Holland
👏🏻 Well done! This looked even tougher than Iceland! I’d love to try something like this, but don’t think I’d manage it… well done on second place especially!
Huge respect for you for completing that. We're grateful for you making this whilst you were suffering badly in morale at times. Takeaway for me is.......NEVER enter BADLANDS 😁 On a serious note, the training commitment alone to get in shape for that both physically and mentally is incredible.
Awesome riding gentlemen. Also, your videos are so much more enjoyable to watch than others' as you use very soothing music. None of this 90s trance rubbish!
You guys are insane 🤣 All that climbing & all the stuff you had to carry to document this journey...the drone, cameras, GoPro, powerbank & laptop maybe? But I'm glad you did. It was beautifully shot & a pleasure to watch. Poor Mike had heat stroke probably. When its that hot, your body is excreting more than its able to take on. The only thing you can to do is to try & cool the body down with ice socks if you can get ice in town & dump as much cool water on your body as possible which is easier said than done when you are self supported. The strategy that you used to ride as much as possible at night was the right one. Chapeau.
Hey Guys, good Look for Badlands 2022 ... I found your name and some of the RBC on the starter list ... Looking forward to see you winning... Wish u no flat and lot of power in your legs ...
WOw, that was an amazing journey, subbed to your channel. I am going to look at the bikes and equipment you were using on this one. Also, I have lost numerous bottles lol, sucks when you want a drink and boom.... Ole! Not there!
What a great achievement guys.. Awesome race and you both finished second which is exceptionally good..When the finish was in sight I felt so happy for you guys...👌🏻
Well done. Love your list of thank yous at the end of video. One for the keen eye’d. Amazing ride; true friendship never both feeling shit at the same time. Always pulling each other through. 😀
Check out the Fidlock System, I ride it on Gravel or with my MTB, I never lost a bottle. Works great. For fluids I always mix my drinks, Water, Maltodextrin 6 and some Natron pouder. So I can control the amount of electrolytes and the ingredients.
Incredible effort and the teamplay, more than great. Loved every second of the video. And at the end 2nd place in the first ultra... wow wow ! Great video :)

Congratulations!! So well done, pushing and supporting each other’s! Wise words, “never quit at night”.
I mean, the ride it self is hard as hell, let alone filming it. How many spare battery did you bring for this video?
2 spares
