On Wednesday October 11 a new record was set for the number of gallons loaded into air tankers in one day at the base - 311,000 gallons.
Between October 9 and 11, Tanker 944, a 747, flew 13 sorties and dropped 215,489 gallons of retardant in the 3 day period.
The B747-400 SuperTanker joins the worlds fleet of aerial firefighting tankers not only as the youngest VLAT (VERY LARGE AIR TANKER) but with almost twice the capacity of the next largest aerial tanker.

I’ll Never forget that night.
Or the weeks after that night.
These flew over my house non stop.
One crazy fire
These pilots and crews are heroes!
Special Thanks to the people of McCellan for their efforts! Our country thanks you for your backbreaking hard work!
And they're back at it in August of 2018! Thanks, guys!
*And now in August 2020...*
@@kellyr95 And now September 2020, cause it's a boy!
With as many 747s that have been retired from commercial service due to COVID, someone should buy a few of these airframes and convert them into additional supertankers. Definitely a demand for these here in Colorado and also in California, Oregon, and Washington where wildfires are burning out of control.
God bless you.....Sonoma County Ca.
I have a video footage on my channel of some of these :-) We reside a few miles from McClellan Airfield :-) Great footage AIRBOYD :-) An Extra "BIG" thumbs up and right into my AVIATION playlist :-) It is awesome seeing these jets fly over our home :-) ROCK ON!!!!!!!
Thank you and got bless you all
I’d like to see a comparison with this years totals
super tanker, salvando al mundo y la galaxia.
Flying all those sorties must add a lot of cycles to the airframe...unless...does anyone know if the aircraft are even pressurized on these missions? Since they fly low, pressurization wouldn't even be needed.
turbofan450 they usually fly very low, for accuracy reasons.
The water discharge system is pressurized to better atomize the water other wise the heavy pouring of water would crush cars and property.
Pelosi needs her lawn and garden watered
I wondered where all those summarily retired MD-10's went.
is it considered a brownout if the plane flies straight through the smoke cloud?
Sadly in 2018 the Southern California Forest Authority has not called one of these aircraft up in spite of the worst fire storms in history, not once. They have an agreement from this company but they were never dispatched.
This airplane does not bring passengers, it brings water to fire.
As there are many different types of non-burning fire protection blankets available on the market, why can't flying drones be used with radar and remote guidance to gently place many super large sized non-burning blankets on a forest fire, while inside of even the worst night time fire conditions when fire retardant planes can not fly, to either smother a fire or to prevent a fire from spreading ? These large non-burning fire blankets could be collected, cleaned, and reused after each forest fire is put out, to become ready again for the next forest fire. Who would be interested in using and researching this idea ?
God bless you all.
We need more than one.
Oh God :( I never heard that number of 40 deaths.
Whats the use if its not used??
Here, this UA-cam video talks about the way fire tanker 747's, were used at a rate of 311,000 Gallons Per Day, and despite these somewhat high numbers, from what We saw last year, Containment was not achieved, until well into the Fall of 2020.
And so, it is logical to assume, Containment of the very large forest fires, took approximately 3-5 Months, before the news reported Full Containment. This also assumes, the fire tanker airplanes unfortunately, are Insufficient at present for their intended purpose, as Efficacy Levels could easily be Increased, by the Procurement of an Appropriate Number of planes such as these, so Full Containment of these large forest fires can be achieved in a much shorter period of time, than what was experienced in 2020, 2019, 2018, etc..
*Containment of these large forest fires can be achieved in a much shorter period of time, than what was experienced in 2020, 2019, 2018, etc..
Amount of Fire Retardant; Average Use Per Day As Stated: - 311,000 Gallons Per Day
Amount [Required to Reduce Time From say Four Months to One Month"]: - 933,000 Gallons Per Day, for a Total of: 1,244,000 Gallons Per Day.
God fking dam it I live right next to McClellan airport San Diego
I got vids on my channel of these!
"gallons"? LOL
still gallons... 😀
Why was the big tanker not used earlier come on Americans enough of the crap the people running this need to be replaced
In this instance they where protecting wine fields. NOT THE PEOPLE!
