  • As fire season is fast approaching, we thought we would look at one aircraft involved in battling these disasters: The Global SuperTanker Services Boeing 747-400.
    Is this the first time you’ve heard of a Boeing 747 being used as an aerial firefighting aircraft?

    I have had that aircraft and the DC-10 super tankers over my house during local fires. Always glad to see them along with all the other air resources and ground equipment. I'm a retired wildland firefighter of 32 years with the US Forest Service.

    I haven't this Air Tanker in operation yet, but when I was based at CFB Comox, on Vancouver Island,back around 1990, the brought the Martin Philippine Mars water bomber for a flyby drop, extremely impressive, soaked us all. Where the Abbotsford Air Show takes place is the home of Conair Water bombers and they have various types of water bombers, including c-130 Hercules and SF2 Fire Cats, converted Tracker Navy aircraft fitted with turbine engines now.

    • @southjerseysound7340
      @southjerseysound7340 4 роки тому

      @@bhall9537 actually clearance was a issue. For starters the way it had to be mounted created aerodynamic issues and it also affected it's thrust output. Even though GE made it fit for testing purposes clearance was a major problem and it could never operate with any kind of weight and that's just the begining. You'd have to redesign the wings, tail section and more. Then when you factor in the heavier weight of the older design. It'd be cheaper and faster to simply redesign the 777 fuselage to accommodates a second level.

    Its kind of a odd choice to me. While it is a good aircraft, it also have an operational empty weight of 185 tons (original spec). A smaller aircraft tend to have a better balance becasuse they are not made for that large of a range.
    A smaller aircraft would also be able to land at a smaller airport. The number of airports that can take a B767 or a A330/A300 is accessible to far more airports. Would also have two planes for the cost of one.. While, yes, to half the capacity.
    There is a reason why the medium size wide body is dominating as air refulers.
    The bottle neck really seams to be the turn around and refill time

With a big enough body of water nearby a fire, those magnificent old bombers could deliver way more water way faster because they don't even need to land to refill the tanks. While the 747 is busy getting to a huge airport to refill the Mars could go skim the nearest lake repeatedly and loiter around a fire literally all day.
