  • How many male kindergarten teachers are there? In Singapore, less than 1% of pre-school educators are men.
The reason, according to Lorbert Tay - who has been in the early childhood sector for close to 10 years - is parents' preconceptions and bias.

Can you trust male pre-school teachers? is a question many ask.
"I was very stressed," recalls Lorbert, who started as a teacher with PCF Sparkletots and is now a centre manager with Carpe Diem. "I had to make sure I didn't do things that parents would feel awkward about."
What do preschool teachers do? To Lorbert, it’s about giving the kids not just a nanny but a father figure to look up to. Shaping young minds is the most rewarding part of the job for him.

It’s such a shame that men in general in society get painted as sex offenders immediately. It’s because so many men are. It’s just not fare to all of the good men in the world.
My dream for the future is that all people can recognize that men, women, children, chicanos, blacks, whites, Asians, every person of every type can have the potential to be an amazing person and everyone has struggles they must overcome. I’ve been on the internet just as much as the next person and I've seen every kind of hate and stigma online. What we need to do as a society is rise above it. Recognize that no one ethnicity, race, religious sect, etc. is better than the others, because we’re all human and I believe that all humans are flawed in some way and that’s ok. The question we need to ask ourselves (and the question I’ve been asking myself recently) is how can we all make the world a little less gloomy, dark, miserable ( because god knows the world is on fire!!) This man is an inspiration to us all to fight the machines of modern times that divide us. The machines that are stigma, preconceptions, misconceptions, and more. Ask yourself today what you can do to make the world better for us all.

I’m also a male preschool teacher. I was in China when I started and response was exactly opposite there. Back in the USA very similar to this guy. But I work with my wife - so it’s slightly easier for people to accept me. Sorry you couldn’t have kids. My wife and I got my one son, but health complications made it impossible for us to have more. Working with kiddos is wonderful. Applaud you bro! I’ve been a surrogate dad to many kids over the past decade. It’s an honor.

Melanie.. Aw boi. I've worked at preschools in LA. All female teachers.. sketched.. they don't operate nowhere near the philosphy of early childhood education/child development. I've seen female teachers just man-handle children by grabbing the kids' arm everywhere pulling-pushing.. to sit down for snack or wherever.. also many who talk to children in appropriately or tell of young children. I report to my friends about what I see or how children are treated and all my colleagues say: "yea, that's the real world"... sad and discouraging for a dude like me passionate about early childhood education/child development

The teacher that has this class is also male and he's definetly 18371947294 times better at it than I am. This is a fantastic example of how sexism hurts men and women. Women and girls are taught from a very young age to fear men, either from direct experience of being hurt by men or being warned to death by other people to fear men.
That’s why so many women may not trust their children around grown men. For men, this is very hurtful, because they cannot express physical affection, love and kindness, even if they want to. Even if it’s the human thing to do. They are locked in a box of masculinity that tells them not to cry, not to have feelings, not to complain, etc.…

Actually the rate of crimes against women children has increased so much that people don't trust anyone easily now. Because you never know what is the actual face of the person. There are many people who on the outside may look like a great person but actually commit crimes that cannot be forgiven. When the news about a child falling prey to some sort of phedoplile comes out naturally other parents start fearing for their own children, wishing that their child won't face the same, get more protective, distrust every male. And in these the genuinely nice and good people suffer. There are some, like this man who are really very very good at heart and doing something because of their own passion but they have to battle distrust and judgements of everyone and these is only because of some criminals.

They don’t even realize it’s offensive. I’m American and their stereotype of Americans are white and blonde. So some don’t even believe me when I say I’m from America. @@PrincessAshley12 yea, I guess it's this intense in Singapore... but not so much in U.S.A. I've met 2 male teachers already from two different cities and they are respected. Male teachers are encouraged and are needed here in the U.S because the male role model is needed for children who may not have it at home... and also, I get parents even when im a male... they have all the right to be careful because sexual abuse does happen and it will ruin a life for a lifetime. So intense care is needed.. In any case, I'd say as long as male teachers are employed then there's no problem. It is sad in this classroom though how the teacher can't even hug his students.. but it makes sense too.. keeping it professional more than teachers being so attached.. I guess ethical boundaries. Also an elementary teacher. My rule is that I will never ask/offer a child a hug, but if they ask for one then I will give it. My reasoning is that I have no idea why that child feels they need a hug (they may never get hugs at home, they may be having a particularly bad day, one of their loved ones may have recently passed away, etc.) and I won't let bullshit perceptions keep me from helping that child.
