DIY FENCE CO$T$ MONEY --- On a Budget 21

- I spent more than half my time on this project in demolition & clean-up. Building a Fence is simple compared to tearing one down and digging up concrete and hauling it all away ... which is why I pushed any clean-up past the 90-day limit I had to build the fence. Once I got the fence completed I would be ready for the city inspector; after that I could worry about clean-up and hauling.
IF you live in the country, and are not replacing a fence but instead putting one up for the first time, you'll save more money than I did here. You will have no fence to tear down, no concrete to pull out of the ground. You can concentrate on construction, that is, digging post holes and setting up posts, which is really 80% of fence building, IMHO. You may not have to pay anything to the city ... I lost $ 25.00 right off the bat to get a permit. I also had to rent a concrete-busting machine for a day at $ 135.00 (after taxes and damage insurance, which Home Depot charges because this is an expensive piece of machinery).
I purchased items that were galvanized, which resists rust. I want this fence to last a long time, maybe another 40 years. I built it to last, and if I need to replace slats or maybe even some support beams, that will be fine, because the metal posts should stay in place until somebody decides to tear them up. Since these bolts and strong-ties were galvanized (along with the outside of the posts), they cost more. I purposely place 2 X 4's to be the support beams, not 2 X 3's as I see in most fences. I'm trying to avoid any sagging crossbeams, which I don't think are very pleasing to the eye.
I only worked a few hours each day, early in the morning or late in the afternoon/evenings, when it was cool, and I stayed in the shade as much as possible. It was springtime here, raining a lot and getting hotter as June & July came about.
Most of the time it was only me, except the day my 2 brothers came by and lent a hand for a few hours ... sure glad they were available, they propelled me forward at least a week. If you have available friends or family members, they'd be a welcome help I'm sure, and would save you a lot in professional labor $$$.
If you view and make a list of the supplies needed, you could figure out how much and how many items of each you'd require for your fence, and also be able to figure out the total cost of your fence project. I suggest going on-line looking for metal posts and wood support beams and slats for better prices. Comparative shopping would probably save you a fraction of the total cost. Habitat for Humanity Restore are located in the big cities, their prices are nice when items are available. Now that I've built a fence, I've got experience, and will be saving $$$ when I build another section of the fence next year, plus I've got screws, paint, and weatherproof protection left over to use. I know what to look for, and this will help me in searching on-line, looking for free delivery from Amazon Prime.
I didn't think of spray-painting the posts until the very end. The best time to spray paint posts are when they are standing up by themselves, without the wood attached. Be sure it's not a windy day, for a good, smooth paint job. Even though my posts are all one color now, the paint job is not so hot; I'll do better next time.

This an amazing research video!! Awesome job on your fence!! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
You are such a hard worker - you took your time, paid attention to detail & did an amazing job!
Wow!!!
Thank-u ! it was my summer project ... big mistake, I should have tackled it in the spring or fall, when the weather was nicer
Like your attention to detail Richard - Well done!
Thank-you Matthew ! As I was telling Steve Swiecki ... I made mistakes, but like a good doctor, I buried most of them. :)
Wow! What am excellent video and beautiful fence. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world. I will be tackling mine shortly!
Thanks ! Glad u liked it. Get as much help as u can and don't be too surprised at the prices, they've gone up since I made that video (2 years ago).
Dam!, I admire for all that hard work you put on and im glad you got some help from your family. Fence looks nice.
Thanks Alejandro 🙂
Turned out pretty nice!
Great work on the labor!
Thank-you ! 🙂 Not bad for an old man, eh ? 😄
You are working so hard. Wish I could be there to help you with your project.
When a city tells you what to do on your property thats not liberty
I agree! Kinda makes me want to move to the country ... but the house is located here. I'm stuck!
I would have utilized that concrete work and those original posts... Because im a habitual if it aint broke dont fit it tyoe.
Excellent job on the fence
Me TOO! I just kept saying, “Why? WHY?”
I guess I was scared of the city inspector ... I didn't want to run the risk of my fence being on my neighbor's property; I'd hate the idea of having to do it all over and move the whole fence 2 inches to the property line. U never know what City Hall is going to make u do, so I played it safe. As you could see, there is a fence on both sides of this neighbor's property, so I wanted to stay on the line ... I didn't want the inspector to say "Hey ... what's THIS?" 😬
@@richardbennett6237 understandable.
But man it was heartbreaking watching it being torn down.
Outcome was excellent
@@racingwithnogas lol, it kinda broke my heart tew ! 😄
You have a lot of patience. that fence was a lot of work. the results were worth it. I wish I was your neighbor, I would have helped you without getting in your way. Especially after I learned that you pay for your help with hamburgers. I believe one day, in the not-too-recent future. you and I will both be 6 feet under, and that fence will still be standing.
😄 Thanks ! There's lots of boo-boos in that fence as well, but I didn't get around to talking about that ... 🙂 I'm almost 66, u hit the nail on the head, I am hoping the fences will outlast me
Looks great 😊
Thank you! 😊
Hey Richard this looks great.
What should I be searching for pipe/post wise? 2.5" by 8' galvanized outside? I'm struggling to find something similar at a reasonable price.
I found a sale at a store called 'The Boss' ... this was a few years ago and they were going for $ 10 each, which was a pretty good price for new. Galvanized on the outside (but not the inside, according to the salesman, this is why I painted the inside, hoping to slow rust). At a hardware store today I think an 8 foot tall X 2.5 inches runs around $ 25 dollars apiece, plus tax. One thing I've noticed was these pipe walls are thinner than they used to be some 60 years ago when I was a kid. They're lighter, thinner, and may rust faster. Maybe you could look around and find some older ones, used? If you have a pick-up truck you could transport them yourself. Used ones are for sale on different sites, but ... if you're in no hurry, I'd put the word out that you're looking for metal posts to friends, relatives, church-members, fellow workers ... Somebody might know somebody wanting to get rid of their fence posts ... for free if you just come and get them (iow's dig them up) ! That might be back-breaking work, but if you have a few young friends, it's do-able. Good Luck !
If it get very cold the concrete inside post can and will freeze and split the post. Compromising structural integrity.
You know you've got me thinking ... good thing at this spot in Texas it doesn't freeze very often. If there were water in the post that would be possible, but I've put a cap on the top. Now at the bottom, that's a different story. I've got concrete down there, too. Unfortunately, concrete is porous, and so water may work its way up into the post. You've got me concerned now; I'll keep an eye on things. I've never seen a post bust in this area, but it's certainly a possibility. Thanks for making me aware! 😯
@@richardbennett6237 That Texas northern make them teeth chatter.
@@laineyboy It sure do !
Never had a problem
That’s how it used to be done you always gave your neighbor, the good side, now, everyone gives the neighbor the bad side of the fence
There was a practical reason for that: I wanted the side where all the hardware shows in case I have to get at it & make repairs in the future.
Plus, it’s easy to climb over when you have the bad side facing out
Wood doesn't rot when it touches dirt, it rots because of moisture and microbes in moist soil
Sumtimes my dirt gets wet 😊, especially in the spring ...
I love the fence. I would have used carriage bolts Instead of leg Bolts That's just me though.😊😅
Thanks ! I'll have to look up carriage bolts to see what they are, you've got me curious now. If I like what I find, mebbe next time I'll use them instead 👍👍
@richardbennett6237 I'm sure you will be fine, Richard. That's a beautiful fence👍!

Back yard fire for old fence
Why would you cut off your neighbors posts that are in his yard
Sounds like you don’t talk to your neighbor
Why would he not help
I don’t get it he’s your neighbor
Don’t neighbors help neighbors
I know we do in my hood
This seems odd to me
But I guess I live in a friendly neighborhood 🤷
Yes, you're right, I have burned much of this fence, but in small fires, not a big bonfire, we're in the city.
What you don't know is ... the neighbor (now deceased) was 89 years old, and wasn't able to help me with the fence. I talked to him at the time to let him know i'd replace it at no cost to him. It was his fence at one time, he originally had it built back in '68, but he never maintained it, probably due to cancer from his cigar habit ; somehow over the years it became ours. So, while we're over-the-fence neighbors, we still kinda-sorta looked out for each other. It's not a perfect situation, but doubt if any neighborhood is. 👍
just curious, since there is a neighbor there, why would you have not faced the nice side of the fence toward your side?
That's a good question. Well, this used to be the neighbor's fence. Somehow we took it over. He was old when I started working on it, and he's been a pretty good neighbor, so I just wanted to keep the peace and make things the way they were. Plus, I don't mind looking at the back side of a fence, I have 6 neighbors surrounding our lot, and they all have their fences turned this way, except one.
You don't have a friend with the equipment to pull out those posts?
Nope 🤥 just me
Why coat the inside of the metal posts?
The salesman told me (years ago when i bought them on sale from THE BOSS store), that they were Galvanized on the Outside, but not the inside. I had some old paint and lots of spare time, so I figured I'd try to cut down on rust by painting the post innards. I've since found the easiest way to do this (by trial & error) is to get a sponge on a stick glass cleaner, the kind you use for washing dishes by hand, and tie it to a 4-1/2 foot stick. Dip the sponge part in old paint, and paint the inside of the 8-foot post from both ends. Much easier than what I was doing in the videos! Good question ... I was wondering when someone was going to ask this.👍👍
That breathing
... the sign of life
😂 here they don't pick up none of those. You have to take it to the dump. Yourself.
u know on my next project I took a truck full of old fence to the dump, saving them the work & hassle of carrying it ... and they charged me a fee for it $$$ ! 😯Gee whiz, & here I thought I was doing them a favor
@@richardbennett6237 you shouldn't pay a dime if you are a resident home owner. I don't know how your community run things where you live. But something need to work on that 😂 your the tax payer just like me. If there's a way there's a will. There's no such thing as ( NO CAN ). " CAN " 😄
