  • Mythological Background:
    According to Hindu mythology, Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Legend has it that once, there was a philosophical debate between Lord Brahma and Muruga about the meaning of the Pranava Mantra (Om). During this discussion, Murugan, who was a young child at the time, intervened and explained the meaning of the mantra to his Father. Impressed by his wisdom, Lord Shiva bestowed upon Murugan the title of "Swaminatha" (Lord of Knowledge) at Swamimalai.
    Historical Significance:
    The Swamimalai Temple is one of the six abodes (Arupadaiveedu) of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu
