Someone once described Streisand's voice as smooth as "mercury on dry ice". When Yentl was released, this scene was criticized as out of step with the rest of the film. For me, time has proven otherwise. I sat in the Ziegfield theatre in NYC 35 years ago when Yentl opened in very limited release and was amazed. Today, to me, this scene represents the very pinnacle of Streisand's greatest artistic achievement. Dreamers like Streisand achieve the unachievable by simply believing nothing is impossible. What an inspiration.
My family believes I am Dame Barbra Streissand. Just, I am going to be 60. Thanks for sharing. Marian. España. Valencia. Facebook / LinkedIn: María de los Ángeles Salinas Novella. My dad passed away 22/03/2016. Still crying !.
Out of step? No, I disagree. She's come out of hiding and is starting the next phase of her life. I do wonder what she did in America, what her life was like.. I know, it's just a movie 😊
What? It's the most impatcful and memorable scene in the whole film! They had no idea what they were talking about. This song changed me! Made me believe I could chase my dreams!
@@princepeterwolf I don't think they considered it out of step , it's mainly that she made it a film with an open ending that sounded more optimistic than Bashevis singer's short story where Yentl simply disappears in a very pessimistic ending very much in line with the rest of his work. Critics, who were always like knives out against anything streisand, felt she had deformed the meaning of his text and Bashevis singer himself was very vocal about it in the papers. To me , she mainly took an argument in a short story she felt was very interesting and made it her own. It is what is called an " adaptation".
One of the most amazing ends to any movie. Her voice and the sentiment in the song is incredibly moving. That final note brings me to tears every time.
I agree. And One of the best movies ever produced . Her voice is magnificent ,especially this last song. I think it really showcases her voice and a fitting song for the last scene and very apt.
She didn't because some critics said 'she didn't portray a man well'. She never was meant to play a man though, but they didn't understand that. She was meant to play someone trying to fool people (in a time where people were more naive) and being scared as heck for it. Which she did wonderfully. The scene where avigdor tries to take her for swimming is one of her most compelling in film. IMO it's her strongest acting performance, even more than 'Funny Girl' or 'The Way We Were'.
@@BarbraHistoricalConcerts Typical American kitsch, I prefer to listen to Beethoven or other classical music. America has Barbra Streisand, we Germans have Wagner, Mozart, Orff, etc...
I’ve always been fascinated by that last note. I think there are only two I’ve heard held as long (and maybe longer). The original Broadway recording of “This is the Moment” and Linder Eder’s last note in her recording of “I Am What I Am. “
This is an awesome soundtrack, deserving of an Oscar and many Grammy's! What an ending song... Barbra is amazing in her expression, both musically and in her acting in this movie!! 🎶 🎦 🎭
It is only now that she is given credit for her stellar body of work. "Yentl" was a remarkable achievement by Streisand and should have been recognized as such. It has stood the test of time too.
Read her memoir book. Then maybe you will fully understand her . And all the criticism she had to endure with the movie and music industry. And reporters ( especially women) who enjoyed whipping her apart. Barbra is a inspiration besides being a great actress, singer , director. And most of an a amazing person. I am truly a big fan of hers and always will be. And proud to say that .
NEVER will a composer write such perfect music (A WHOLE MOVIE) to fit a singer's voice the way Michel Legrand did for Barbra in YENTL. The whole soundtrack is to cry for.
If Milos Forman had directed and produced this film it would have been nominated for a dozen Oscars. Groundbreakers like Streisand are usually criticized, if not vilified, but they always have the last laugh. If she had done nothing but this film she would be a legend.
Clever framing for the first half of the song, we're not entirely sure if she's still in disguise or not until we see the full-length shot, and witness how confidently she is moving through a crowd. At last, Yentl is herself.
Yes, her wintery togs are so concealing that you're not sure at first if she is still in hiding. But when that full-length shot zoomed out, people lightly applauded in my group when they saw her in a long dress walking forward. What a finale.
The most talented singer, actress, concert and movie producer, concert and movie director, songwriter and filmmaker woman in the entire universe……Miss Barbra Streisand❤️❤️❤️
I hear this song from time to time, and have watched the movie also.. what a great piece of art. Connection is the core of this song.. our families and parents. Let's stay true, human, humble, and fighting to be the best we can be in this dimension.
One of the best film endings ever - and that final long held note - wow - this sequence is epic - and i love that it's a visual call back to the tug boat scene "Don't Rain on My Parade" in "Funny Girl" - bravo Barbra!
Lovely movie. Saw it again after more thsn 30 years and it is still as magical as it was then. Have never understood why she was panned so much when this movie came out. Always thought she was in her most natural element both as an actress and songstress in this movie. What a voice...it;s not just about having a great voice ..but about its uniqueness...about character and feeling ..and warmth..the elements that draw you in and make you relate to the person singing it. Judy Garland had it in spades and Streisand, in my view, remains unmatched in this regard
I agree. I'm so much younger, not even eighteen, and this movie is not usually known by people my age, but my mom made sure to show me this wonderful piece of art.
OMG, simply inspired! I have never ever witnessed a voice with so much passion and yet so much Grace. I remember the first time I heard this as a teenager, I ran from upstairs to downstairs upon hearing the first couple of notes and was totally spellbound by her performance. She is the closest thing to a girl crush I’ve ever had in my life. Absolutely stunning, sensational, out of this world beautiful and amazing.
I remember when this film came out, I was walking through Leicester Square and there was the poster for Yentil, showing at the Odeon, and I actually heard someone say to the person they were with ''We have to come and see this while Barbra Streisand is still in it 🤪
Deliberate reference. In both cases, the character has finally shaken off the shackles of conventional roles and pursued independent visions. "Don't Rain on my Parade," means, "Don't criticize my choices." And, "Piece of Sky," means, "Don't limit my opportunities." These resonate with Streisand personally because she has always pursued her own choices and never limited her opportunities. She has taken control of her own life, as these two characters have taken control of theirs.
I loved this movie as an 8 year old child. My father tought me violin, piano wvwn algebra(beginning) off as a 5 and 6 year old. Yea I was allowed tonplay and be q child but I was above my years and he was and always will be my best friend. Great film. Classic

I am auditioning in a few weeks for a local theatre group and using the lyrics from “Tell me where, m” which I will speak and then end by attempting to sing that last note…I am a soprano and recorded myself on What’s App and think I can pull it off
So many memories of these days on board and so many faces of friends and family no longer here, and yet I see them as maybe our grandparents may have travelled escaping persecution and I am standing quietly at the back of the boat where Ms S put me.;)
Not my kind of movie but I love the finale. Fleeing the poor, oppressive old world for the freedom and prosperity of America. Imagine how happy those people were when they caught their first glimpse of land at Sandy Hook or at the Montauk Light and then passed through the Narrows into New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty there to greet them.
