- “The Stalls of Barchester” is a ghost story written by the British writer M. R. James.
In 1932, Dr Black, a scholar cataloguing the library of Barchester Cathedral, stumbles upon a 50-year-old diary. This diary, sealed under the order of the Dean, chronicles the events leading up to the mysterious death of Dr. Haynes, a former Archdeacon of the cathedral.
As Dr. Black delves into the diary’s contents, he pieces together a chilling tale. It begins with the murder of Haynes’ aged predecessor, which sets off a chain of eerie events. The cathedral’s 17th-century carving on the choir stalls and the appearance of a large black cat become central to the unfolding mystery. The curse of ‘Austin the Twice-Born,’ the carver responsible for the wooden decorations, haunts the former archdeacon, ultimately leading to his demise.
