Please understand, the "rock" is Jesus, not Peter (the "rock" refers to God / Jesus in the OT and NEW). The "keys to the kingdom of Heaven" is Jesus and repentance and belief in Jesus, and the loosing and binding means to do on earth what is already ordained by God in heaven.

Tears in my eyes after hearing this. I'm a cradle catholic but on my college days, so many questions in my mind that I started attending denominations like pentecostal church, baptist church, united church of Christ and even Islam but all didn't give me peace of mind. And one day happened to read John 6: 53-54 about Lord's Supper of true followers on earth and the Apostles started this in Acts 2:46 and Revelation 19:6-9 the Marriage Supper of the Lamb with His true followers in Heaven. I have to go back where i came from to be invited with that feast in heaven. And never again in my life the peace of mind, heart and soul I have ever experienced. And sometimes after Holy Communion I just burst into tears of joy knowing that Jesus is waiting for me with that Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Heaven.

HALLELUJAH ! I am never listening to Protestant sermons again because they lead the faithful further into the abyss. It is a vast wilderness out there and we as Catholics should never think the grass is greener on the other side, no matter how eloquent and tempting it sounds and looks. Praise God forever! (Greek added by me) Now if you read this on its own there are clearly three interpretations: 1) Peter is the Rock 2) Jesus is the Rock 3) Peter's faith in Jesus is the rock It would have been clearer if the writer had said "you are Peteros and on this Petros...". Its speculative to say there was not more than one word for rock in Aramaic- clearly there could have been such distinctions. But nonetheless, the writer's of the New Testament leave us no room for speculations Paull tell us who the foundation is: 1 Corinthians 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. But it is Peter himself who is explicit: 1 Peter 2:4 As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone,and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” There you have it! Peter calls Jesus the rock. Peter, himself, makes no claim that we need to be connected specifically and personally to Jesus. Its clear Paul thought that too, otherwise he would not have openly rebuked and challenged Peter for hypocrisy (Galatians 2:11). Remember this dear brothers and sisters, the Rock is God, is Christ, alone, no other. To him we are connected directly, no other mediator is needed (1 timothy 2:5). I am looking to identify The Church that Jesus Christ Himself founded. It was clear He Founded a Church. It has to have a name and it has to survive over 2,000 years and is still standing today as testimony.
Rose Stella Hi! Its a great question! The Church that Jesus founded was based on faith. As such, you cannot see it with your eyes, or know it by your physical senses only. Its not like a political instituion, whose headquarters are in x place. The Head of the Church is Jesus Christ Himself (Ephesians 5:23); and no other man. There were many churches, even at the time of the writing of the New Testament (eg. see Revelation 2 to Revelation 3). The test becomes, what shows whether a person is saved, whether a person is part of Jesus' Body, whether he is part of His Church. Its a big question, but ultimately, to know this, it is about whether someone has completely surrender their life to Jesus, believe in Him, believed in His death and resurrection, and made Him Lord of their life (this means that for everything in their life, this persons says "not my will, by your will be done)". When someone takes this step, it is described as a new birth in the Bible (eg. John 3) and God puts His Spirit into that person as they die to their old self, and recieve a new seed, a new heart. This is what it means to be part of God's Church. As you can see, salvation is a question of someone's heart (Romans 10:9; Jeremiah 29:13), therefore to ask the question which Church did Jesus found, it is really something only Jesus knows fully- He knows who are His, and one day He will separate the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31 onwards). So yes, as Romans 10:9 says, the first thing to check with someone is whether they have confessed Jesus as Lord, and then it might take a bit of time to know the person, to see if their heart is God's. But don't be confused, there's no denominational name given that allows you to be saved, not Catholic, not Proestant, not Orthodox (Revelation 3:1); but rather there is One Name you can be saved by (Acts 4:12)- "there is no other name...". Please understand, the "rock" is Jesus, not Peter (the "rock" refers to God / Jesus in the OT and NEW). The "keys to the kingdom of Heaven" is Jesus and repentance and belief in Jesus, and the loosing and binding means to do on earth what is already ordained by God in heaven.

Venerable Archbishop Fulton J Sheens TV talks were my 1st introduction to something 'Catholic' as well as the West Bend Grotto in Iowa. In my Protest family Bishop Sheen was quickly put on the NO WATCH TV list once I indicated interest in what he was saying, and at the Grotto no one would take me to the Catholic Church on the grounds to see what was inside...I felt something drawing me there ... but was reluctant to leave the group on my own ... Steve Ray was polite when he said that those who broke away from the church had a raft. I used to imagine that Luther and others who left the Church simply jumped into the sea and started swimming on their own. For sometime it was synchronized swimming but gradually became freestyle. But each has to swim to be alive. Even while swimming like this they believe and preach that those in the SHIP are doomed.
All we, Catholics, have to do is to have an open mind and open heart to really get to the bottom of our faith, study its history, truthfulness and beauty, and the depth of its doctrine and we will be alright. We won't have to transfer from one faith to another. .. The fullness of truth is in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church....

+Tim Spangler Let me confess, I am not a trained person in Bible or Churches doctrine, but I belief what I believe. There is indeed only one real person and that is Jesus. There is no doubt about it if we are a christian. Everything becomes so clear and simple if seek him with openness and simplicity. Besides Him there can be only inspired saints. I belief in Jesus, the Bible and the church, because He never wanted to have churches, but He said let all of you be One as Me and My Heavenly father is one. And I belief, He did not also come to teach us a way of life but reveal the Father to us, for me faith is that simple and clear, but to regulate my belief there has to be an authority, who can be a better guide than the church, which is His Mystical Body.
You made the right choice and have far more wisdom than the likes of Tim here. Tim's sole purpose in life is to lead people away from the Catholic Church. You are correct, there has to be authority and the Catholic Church is the authority established by Jesus. Tim seems to think he is the authority but alas he is not. He is lost in a sea of confusion and rebellion like all other protestants.

I listened to steve ray a while back and I was not nearly as impressed as I am now. it was an old video though and it was on baptism. But man this was an absolute masterpiece. I am a protestant that has been studying the church mostly to make sure I could refute all the arguments but those seem to be getting knocked out here lately. I have followed scott hahn for a while and I have the utmost respect for him and his ministry. Anyways my point is this was the best video I have ever seen on all these topics and I really dont want to refute the majesty of the stories he just described. Steve Ray is going through some rather complicated arguments with amazing detail that I appreciate. Born Nazarene/Methodist, I converted to Catholicism in 1986 after traveling about 14 years through the Pentecostal churches. This was after being born again on Easter Sunday 1968. The real clincher for me was the fact that Christ never withdrew the authority he gave to the Levitical priesthood (Matt. 23:1-3) in spite of its many sins of idolatry...starting way back with Aaron and the Golden Calf and going to all the other denunciations of the Pharisees in Matthew 23. And THAT was under the Law of Moses AFTER they had scripture! In Matthew 23:1-3 and other places, Christ clearly points out that God is smart enough to anoint and appoint humans to interpret scripture. Anyone with a lick of sense and has a written document understands the necessity of this structure, everyone from those who write federal constitutions and then appoint educated judges to those who write baseball rules and select umpires. So how in the world under Grace and Truth would Christ withdraw his authority from the Chair of St. Peter that gave us the NT? Say what? And what was the point of even saying the scribes and the Pharisees had authority for just a few months? No! As with everything He taught, Christ was revealing the unchangeable nature of God. We need the 'three-legged stool,' the three constant witnesses that our blessed brother talks about.

Please understand, the "rock" is Jesus, not Peter (the "rock" refers to God / Jesus in the OT and NEW). The "keys to the kingdom of Heaven" is Jesus and repentance and belief in Jesus, and the loosing and binding means to do on earth what is already ordained by God in heaven.

Tears in my eyes after hearing this. I'm a cradle catholic but on my college days, so many questions in my mind that I started attending denominations like pentecostal church, baptist church, united church of Christ and even Islam but all didn't give me peace of mind. And one day happened to read John 6: 53-54 about Lord's Supper of true followers on earth and the Apostles started this in Acts 2:46 and Revelation 19:6-9 the Marriage Supper of the Lamb with His true followers in Heaven. I have to go back where i came from to be invited with that feast in heaven. And never again in my life the peace of mind, heart and soul I have ever experienced. And sometimes after Holy Communion I just burst into tears of joy knowing that Jesus is waiting for me with that Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Heaven.

HALLELUJAH ! I am never listening to Protestant sermons again because they lead the faithful further into the abyss. It is a vast wilderness out there and we as Catholics should never think the grass is greener on the other side, no matter how eloquent and tempting it sounds and looks. Praise God forever! Luke tells us who the Rock is:

Then we come to Matthew:
Matthew 16:18

Now if you read this on its own there are clearly three interpretations: 1) Peter is the Rock 2) Jesus is the Rock 3) Peter's faith in Jesus is the rock
It would have been clearer if the writer had said "you are Peteros and on this Petros...". Its speculative to say there was not more than one word for rock in Aramaic- clearly there could have been such distinctions. But nonetheless, the writer's of the New Testament leave us no room for speculations
Paull tell us who the foundation is:
1 Corinthians 3:10
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder,
and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus
Christ.
But it is Peter himself who is explicit:
1 Peter 2:4
As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by humans but chosen by
God and precious to him- you also, like living stones, are being built into a
spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious
cornerstone,and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this
stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”
There you have it! Peter calls Jesus the rock. Peter, himself, makes no claim that we need to be connected specifically and personally to Jesus. Its clear Paul thought that too, otherwise he would not have openly rebuked and challenged Peter for hypocrisy (Galatians 2:11).
Remember this dear brothers and sisters, the Rock is God, is Christ, alone, no other. To him we are connected directly, no other mediator is needed (1 timothy 2:5).

I am looking to identify The Church that Jesus Christ Himself founded. It was clear He Founded a Church. It has to have a name and it has to survive over 2,000 years and is still standing today as testimony.
Rose Stella Hi! Its a great question! The Church that Jesus founded was based on faith. As such, you cannot see it with your eyes, or know it by your physical senses only. Its not like a political instituion, whose headquarters are in x place. The Head of the Church is Jesus Christ Himself (Ephesians 5:23); and no other man. There were many churches, even at the time of the writing of the New Testament (eg. see Revelation 2 to Revelation 3). The test becomes, what shows whether a person is saved, whether a person is part of Jesus' Body, whether he is part of His Church. Its a big question, but ultimately, to know this, it is about whether someone has completely surrender their life to Jesus, believe in Him, believed in His death and resurrection, and made Him Lord of their life (this means that for everything in their life, this persons says "not my will, by your will be done)". When someone takes this step, it is described as a new birth in the Bible (eg. John 3) and God puts His Spirit into that person as they die to their old self, and recieve a new seed, a new heart. This is what it means to be part of God's Church. As you can see, salvation is a question of someone's heart (Romans 10:9; Jeremiah 29:13), therefore to ask the question which Church did Jesus found, it is really something only Jesus knows fully- He knows who are His, and one day He will separate the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31 onwards). So yes, as Romans 10:9 says, the first thing to check with someone is whether they have confessed Jesus as Lord, and then it might take a bit of time to know the person, to see if their heart is God's. But don't be confused, there's no denominational name given that allows you to be saved, not Catholic, not Proestant, not Orthodox (Revelation 3:1); but rather there is One Name you can be saved by (Acts 4:12)- "there is no other name...". That being said I would gently mention to Mrs. Ray that the Catholics were in fact telling the truth while she was growing up ... but one had to be in the vicinity to hear it ... or looking for it ... or have a Catholic speaker invited into a Protest environment to get the view. Venerable Archbishop Fulton J Sheens TV talks were my 1st introduction to something 'Catholic' as well as the West Bend Grotto in Iowa. In my Protest family Bishop Sheen was quickly put on the NO WATCH TV list once I indicated interest in what he was saying, and at the Grotto no one would take me to the Catholic Church on the grounds to see what was inside...I felt something drawing me there ... but was reluctant to leave the group on my own ... [Wish I'd had the courage at the time]. He got me later though. Thank you Lord

Steve Ray was polite when he said that those who broke away from the church had a raft. I used to imagine that Luther and others who left the Church simply jumped into the sea and started swimming on their own. For sometime it was synchronized swimming but gradually became freestyle. But each has to swim to be alive. Even while swimming like this they believe and preach that those in the SHIP are doomed.

He is lost in a sea of confusion and rebellion like all other protestants.

I listened to steve ray a while back and I was not nearly as impressed as I am now. it was an old video though and it was on baptism. But man this was an absolute masterpiece. I am a protestant that has been studying the church mostly to make sure I could refute all the arguments but those seem to be getting knocked out here lately. I have followed scott hahn for a while and I have the utmost respect for him and his ministry. Anyways my point is this was the best video I have ever seen on all these topics and I really dont want to refute the majesty of the stories he just described. Steve Ray is going through some rather complicated arguments with amazing detail that I appreciate. Born Nazarene/Methodist, I converted to Catholicism in 1986 after traveling about 14 years through the Pentecostal churches. This was after being born again on Easter Sunday 1968.
The real clincher for me was the fact that Christ never withdrew the authority he gave to the Levitical priesthood (Matt. 23:1-3) in spite of its many sins of idolatry...starting way back with Aaron and the Golden Calf and going to all the other denunciations of the Pharisees in Matthew 23. And THAT was under the Law of Moses AFTER they had scripture!
In Matthew 23:1-3 and other places, Christ clearly points out that God is smart enough to anoint and appoint humans to interpret scripture. Anyone with a lick of sense and has a written document understands the necessity of this structure, everyone from those who write federal constitutions and then appoint educated judges to those who write baseball rules and select umpires.
So how in the world under Grace and Truth would Christ withdraw his authority from the Chair of St. Peter that gave us the NT? Say what? And what was the point of even saying the scribes and the Pharisees had authority for just a few months? No! As with everything He taught, Christ was revealing the unchangeable nature of God. We need the 'three-legged stool,' the three constant witnesses that our blessed brother talks about.
