Moved to Portugal from the UK in October 2002, rented for a few months, found and bought our house in the mountains of Alto Alentejo within 6 months. Still here 21 years later. Never bought a lottery ticket, but if I did and won, I'd still stay exactly where we are. We found our own personal paradise here and never going anywhere else.

I often say that the future is in the past, and watch this interview reminded me of that. We too "Me, wife and dog" have chosen this off-grid lifestyle in Spain. We are at the very beginning of our off grid journey, having bought the land 2 years ago, and earlier this year we applied for the building permit. Now we are waiting for it to be approved, so we can restore the 300-year-old stone house and move permanently to the Finca. Watching this interview has enlightened my spirit. Thank you so much for sharing it!
You can start building. Once the permit is in. As long as you don't touch the external walls or expand the footprint. You can crack on indoors. They also have retrospective planning permission.

This episode is i think the best of all you have done, which is saying something as they are all fantastic. I'm half-Spanish, and throughout my life I've visited family in a small rural village in the mountains of El Bierzo, León. I live in Madrid with my wife and at some point we'll be moving out from the city and looking for a more sustainable way to live. Videos like this are an absolute inspiration for people who want to escape the trappings of modern city life.
This is absolutely stunning . I've lived off grid for over 24 years in the uk. And yes to my costs you can't just buy land and do what you like. Jumping though hoops with the council to try to keep my van on here. Its great you're doing this so young..
We found the idea of living off grid in the UK very difficult and very expensive to buy land etc too so that’s why we opted to Spain! So nice to hear you have been doing it for 24 years though - good on you! ❤

I love this home. I have some things in common with you guys, and some things very different. I am on the Costa Del Sol in an apartment but off grid for electricity. I have about 3,000 watts of solar with 2 large 48 volt life PO4 batteries and a 5 kw inverter. In the summer I have plenty of electricity for electric water heating, electric kettle, washing machine, dishwasher etc. In the winter I use gas water heater and hob. Sometimes I can't use the washing machine and have to go to the launderette. Unlike you, I can't use a generator because of the noise disturbance to neighbours. I nearly bought a fabulous wooden bungalow with land in the mountains. I only decided against it because I am in my late 60s, and realised it could be difficult in the future as I get older. I would recomend to you to upgrade your solar when possible. You have plenty of space for solar panels. And it is a nice luxury in the summer to have unlimited free electricity. I like your loo with a view. I did live in a caravan for 2 years with 400 watts of solar and a Nature's Head composting toilet. Just a small inverter. 12v TV, adapter to 9v for router, gas fridge and heater. Even an adapter from 12v to 18v for my laptop. So only rarely used the inverter. As you have realised, if you are prepared to think outside the box you can make things work for you off grid. Best wishes to you and your familly.

I left the UK for Spain 20 years ago, make no mistake the UK will collapse. The one thing iv noticed regards expats coming to Spain are the break-ups, so many come and expect it all to fall into place, it's hard work but worth it.
It is SUPER hard work and a real challenge but so worth it ❤ We wouldn’t have it any other way challenges and all!

Cisterns (made with just cinder blocks in the ground to hold rain water) are used all over the world. This is what all off-grids should look into as their main water source. They last a life time. Its a great way to store your rain water as it's below ground and the evaporation aspect is very low vs above ground water storage. Ch Mr & Mrs adventure are in protugal too and used large cement block for their above ground storage. These are common in Portugal according them them.
Cisterns are the way especially for countries that get a lot of rain!😊😊

@@offgridandonline The video about your home is truely inspirational! I just wonder why you grow only olives (at least it seems so). I understand that water is a concern but I have a house in Spain too and with even less water (under 200mm rain a year on south facing mountain slope). Check out the channel "Discover Permaculture with Geoff Lawton" for the greening the desert project and similar. With some swales and mulch, more can be done with the land, which also generates an income. Dried fruits, jams, juice etc.

Really inspiring guys! I admire the courage. I've been aspiring to do the same but I do worry about Spain becoming more and more arid and generally being one of the countries most affected by climate change in the future. Can't imagine growing food will be easy...
Don’t let that put you off! There are many ways to grow veg with a small amount of water 😊 Also lots of farms are connected to agricultural water which is SUPER cheap so you don’t have to totally rely on rainwater 😊

A lovely place and family. I’m a forester in South Africa and have had to deal with a number of wildfires. My one concern is the exit to their property. Looking at the trees around the property and how the road winds through a few stands of trees I get a bit uncomfortable. Look into creating a defendable space around the house if you are not able to get out in time. Fire is unforgiving, be prepared. Perhaps a pump and a few sprayers linked to the water tank as a precaution.
Fires are a big risk in the summer so we keep all the grass down around the house and we have an exit strategy. There are two exists from the property too. I set up a local WhatsApp group too for people in the area so we can alert each other of fires when they start 😊

I would like to live there, I am Spanish but from the north, it is very cold. we say what you can do today do not leave for tomorrow, the weather is very harsh and you always have to be prepare for the worst. Enjoy your house and your big beautiful forest. God bless you
