I’ve been loving my Gabriel Gold glasses for about 4 years. I have 2. I also have 4 of the Gabriel Standards. One day I will upgrade to all golds. Back when I was researching this purchase I narrowed it down to these and the Zaltos. I found them to be similar in my taste testing, but loved the look of the Gabriel, the slight curve made them a bit more interesting to me. They make great wedding gifts!
I agree 100% the Zalto glasses really give you an exceptional sense of smell and taste when drinking wine, thanks for making the video! Helped me pick these glasses and I love them
The second video of five I've watched with Madeline sipping Pinot Noir. Just had some for the first time two days ago, and it's nice. Keep making videos Madeline!
Jancis Robinson x Richard Brendon is the best go to glass, but probably best for more complex whites, even though it is marketed as a one fits all. Elegant, beautiful aesthetic, dishwasher proof, albeit it needs to be handled with care as it is very delicate. When opening a 97+ wines there is no alternative to Zalto. The burgundy and gravitas omega (burgundy without base) are simply awesome. I got the whole range over time and have never looked back.
Bought two of the Gabrielle Glas a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely brilliant. Currently using one for the 2009 Schoene Harmonie “R” field blend from Rangen de Thann vineyard in Alsace. So you were, as usual, spot on when you said you’d like to use the glass for Riesling.👏👏👏👏👏
You're the top, Madeline! Love your manner of presentation and the immediacy of your honesty. I had some Glasvin Universals (I cheaped out on these Chinese hand blown glasses because the Zalto Universals were not available at the time). The Glasvins broke at mid-stem within a week of purchase. Zalto's finally became available and you are SO right about them. Most definitely would not recommend the Glasvin version unless one simply wants them as display models. They're nerve-racking to use thus eliminating the pleasure of drinking wine from a fine glass.
an excellent and very fair review of these wine glasses. They are expensive so we do want to pick wisely. I think you express your ideas very clearly..Thank you
To simplify my life, I was looking for the one glass to rule them all. And thanks to your very vivid characterisation I became aware of the Gabriel, which (in the StandArt version) very conveniently sells for just under USD 20 here in Switzerland. I must confess that I like the unusual, non-rigid character of the Zalto, but the price/performance ratio of the Gabriel StandArt is amazing. I have since re-tasted some of my favourite everyday wines (like the entry level Rüdesheimer Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from Bischöfliches Weingut in Rüdesheim, the standard Lagrein by Muri Griess or Eva Fricke's simple but delicious Kiedrich Riesling) and I find the Gabriel adds a lot of information (and fun) to these wines that I thought I knew inside out. Thank you again for that!
Over the years I’ve had so many Riedel glasses break either by guests or from washing them that I eventually switched to that Schott Zwiesel you showed (and then put aside) in the beginning of your video. I’ve had two break in 3 years. And when they did break, the low cost made me not care that they did. Are the Zalto and Riedel “better?” Yes. Wine drinking with those is a more ethereal experience. But for regular use and dinner guests, I’m sticking with the Schott Zwiesel.
indeed. sure. But I wanted to talk about the best. That said, I didn't say there was anything wrong with them. If you're serving people dinners, you're already better than most! So, I'd just stick to that, I guess :)
I did a similar experiment but used only Zalto denk'art glasses and tested the same wine in their white, universal, bordeaux and burgundy glass. I only bought one of each to figure out, which type of glasses I should get and ultimately settled on universal and burgundy. Their bordeaux glass didn't work at all for me. Very big and wide, the wine is somewhat lost in it, even if you have a high alcohol cab. If you put a high alcohol cab in the pinot glass, it highlights the alcohol even more. The universal worked best for most wines I tested, and the burgundy works really well with pinot and nebbiolo (which are my favourites)
Dear Madeline, a very good video and well explained! Also "cheaper" wines, drunk from a handmade glass, e.g. Zaltoglas, are perceived differently than from machine-made glasses. Lightness and fine transparency clearly increase the enjoyment enormously. My favourite universal glass for red wine would be the Zalto Bordeaux Denk'Art.😃💕🍷
For anyone struggling to make the decission: Gabriel Glas Standart (I have the industrial glasses, I cannot even speak on the handblown version) completely enhanced my wine experience. I am not kidding, I smell and taste way more in comparisson to my other glasses. I tend to be super skeptical when it comes to these things, but I wanted to spoil myself and see if I could really notice a difference. And boy did I notice it!
that was an awesome masterclass - thanks for doing this !! it helped a lot not only to further understand the importance of the mouthfeel but also for picking the next glassware - u rule !
Really like the Riedel Vinum Restaurant Series Bordeaux. The stem is a little shorter and allows me to store in my kitchen cabinets. The others I find a tad tall
Ha! Me too (as I'm sure you saw!) Yes, these glasses are great, especially if you love big bold red wine. I will note that all the other glasses tested in this video are shorter than the Riedels you just mentioned.
Didn't know wine folly had a channel! Thorougly enjoyed this video, probably ending up getting a pair of the zaltos. Love the style. Great video, you have a lovely quirky, profound wine-loving personality, that I really enjoy! Subscribed :D
Excellent Post Madeline! I have the Gabriel Glas Gold and while they are phenomenol, I broke one within two weeks of use :( I'm glad to see you also like the StandArt edition, and it will likely lead me to invest in a few of those for comparison! Cheers!!!
Great Video! for fairness,i think rather than 3 oz in each, , it would be better to fill each glass to the widest point, as the jancis glass is made to be filled higher to it's widest point, you could call it the waist , round or deeper V shaped bottoms need more wine in them to perform and seem to be more of a meal glass. obviously you are going to get more wine surface area with the widest point. the other thing for me is how glasses fit on to the face, if they are too small at the mouth they dont allow you to put your nose all the way in to it . eyeglasses also pose a problem. Also the way it fits on your face affects the path of the way the air flows in the glass when you sniff or breath in and out of it. and on long and big glasses of course that is more of a factor. its amazing how wines taste so different in different glasses. the shape of the chamber also affects the speed of the air flowing through it. you can study acoustical theory of horn speaker systems to get an idea of how different shapes affect air..
I couldn't agree with your review more. I think the Gabriel $30 does an excellent job for a great price and if it breaks, the price makes it easy to replace!
Yes! I would love to see a video on wine glasses that are grape specific. Btw, I have your book. It’s so much fun. It was Recommended when I took a wine tasting class at books and books. (Hello from coral gables, Florida)
With the wine tasting so different in each glass, what are the chances someone could not like a wine in their glass but would like it in another glass? My next question is, how do we really know what a wine was meant to taste like since that wine is always showing differently dependent on the glass?
I use the Schott Zwiesel "Air" series of glasses. Very thin glass and stem with just the very subtle hint of a lip on the bowl. I used to freak out about any kind of lip on a glass, but the Air series glasses are so comfortable to drink from and they're pretty tough. The retail on the Air series glasses is $18.00! I got all of mine at Williams Sonoma for $11 a stem on closeout! I liked them so much, I bought out all of the Schott Zwiesel Air inventory (over 70!) in the stores in the Twin Cities area! Basically, a dozen Burgundy, a dozen Bordeaux, a dozen "Light Bodied White Wine, 18 Champagne and 22 "All Purpose" glasses.
Have you tried the new Riedel Performance? I loved it. My new favourite, especially the Pinot Noir version. It"s also a beautiful object to behold. They are so light too. I've always preferred the more rounded shape of Riedel glasses to the Zalto type shape. Try them when you have the chance. Cheers!
James Lowe I’ve tried their entire performance range. It’s great. The glasses are light, have a wonderful shape, and they compliment the taste of the wine wonderfully. My favourites are Cab, Pinot, and Riesling, but champagne is also very very good! And it looks great.
Just be VERY CAREFUL when drying the Riedel Performance glasses! I had a drying towel inside a Bordeaux/Cab glass and as I twisted the base (like I do whenever I dry any wine glass) the stem snapped right in two! That was the second Riedel Performance Cab glass that the stem snapped on. Fortunately, Amazon sells them for $59 per pair.
It’s a very well done video, but honestly a little biased since you are selling the Gabriel-Glas StandArt. Although looking at multiples reviews I do think that’s the one to get!

I love the mix of knowledge vs total lack of shall I say snobbiness - it's refreshing - the usual BS segment was less BS too, also refreshing. Good job. I've not tried the Zalto universal but my top glass so far in all these years is the Zalto Bordeaux with second place going to the Riedel Sommeliers Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru - which is twice the size and weight of the Zalto but similarly delicate as the name implies. In a couple of months I'm going to order a few more types to try, though. :-)
I am new and appreciate your content. Help me understand further. How much time was paused in between smelling ? And how do you go back to baseline in between each glass and if cleansing in between glasses is needed? THANK YOU!!!! ☺

No mention of the best, titanium infused schott zwiesel Cabernet glass? I have two 6 packs, and they are my Crown Jewels for dinner parties. They are an amazing glass, and boy can they take abuse.
Neil oppa you don’t need a “champagne flute” or even worse, a coupe. Use your universal glass and have a complete taste and nose experience of your Champagne.
Yes, there are quite a few that I didn't mention. What's your opinion on Mark Thomas? What do you think of those crazy shapes! Also, I think James Suckling has a great glass partnership with Lalique that's worth adding in here, since we're talking about missed mentions: www.lalique.com/en/the-lalique-james-suckling-100-points-collection -
I once went to a tasting where we tried the same wines from a regular riedel, Zalto and MT. In my opinion, MT was absolutely the best and I've spent the last 3 months waiting for my glasses. You won't believe it, but my parcel got lost 3 times! Anyway, it was worth waiting for them, wonderful, wonderful glasses. Oh, I got the double bend. The James Suckling one looks interesting but I believe that one of the things that makes a glass exceptional is a thin stem. So I think I'll stick with my Double Bends 😊
@@tangoromeo Wowsa! Yeah, those definitely caught my eye. What's the opening diameter size? Does it work better on reds? (See.. I'm already brimming with questions). I'll have to order one and give it a go. (P.S. my glass collection makes no sense... I have at least one of everything)
Wine Folly They make different shapes for different reds, I have both the Double Bend Red for heavier wines and Double Bend Red Expression for Pinot Noir, Garnacha etc. I also got the Double Bend White. I can check the opening diameter for you in a couple of days, when I get home. Btw I think I need to order your cleaning cloth!

It rymes with "beetle" or "needle." I love your videos and your work - but this is a big miss. Undermines your crediblilty.
The fact that you completely disregarded all the work in this and instead focused on my lack of pronunciation is asinine. Sure, you're right; I bombed the pronunciation but this comment just makes me shake my head and LOL. Thanks for the correction, but no, I disagree. Tomato tomato.

Enzo Enzokun She is a certified Sommelier, and a wine author. I think she probably knows. And yes, these glasses are all universal for all wines.
Schott-Zwiesel is very good everyday glass!
does it leak?
what about white wine glasses?
I'm drinking 4.99 Crane lake Pinot I bought at Winn Dixie from a glass I got at Dollar tree.
It's probably bulk wine from Chile. I bet u 1 penny.
Just watched another video...Awesome!
What are you thoughts on MarkThomas glasses?
A few people have asked, but I haven't ever touched them in person. Boy do they look sexy though!
Do you have a patreon?
If the wine is good, doesnt matter the glass. I always use a neckless glass
Nothing wrong with “no necks. “ I’m going to start calling them that inspired by you! 👏
Does a red solo cup qualify?
It makes a great spitoon. And, a horrible wine glass.
@Gary Barlow Wow. you must totally not get the point of wine appreciation. I mean.. you're kinda asking to be called a newb right now.
Rolled into Homegoods and got a 6 pack of glasses for $12... they look decent anyways.
I bought the zalto wine glass and for me personally I didn’t like it, especially when I compared it to my Riedel ouverture double magnum. I tried to like it but everyone is different.
Just bought some glasses from your site. Don't make me look bad.
We love 'em. Hope you do too :)
@@winefolly Just arrived today! Thank you. Big boss will try them out soon!
No mention of the best, titanium infused schott zwiesel Cabernet glass? I have two 6 packs, and they are my Crown Jewels for dinner parties. They are an amazing glass, and boy can they take abuse.
Could you please do a video like this for champagne glasses?
Neil oppa you don’t need a “champagne flute” or even worse, a coupe. Use your universal glass and have a complete taste and nose experience of your Champagne.
Can you give a try and maybe a comment to the Grassl Glass?
You’ve missed Mark Thomas Glassware. I think they make the best glasses out there. 😉
I gree your opinion!@@tangoromeo
I don't think anyone uses lead in crystal anymore. They've gone to titanium on the high end glasses.
You know you’re a rookie SOMM when all of them look the same to you. :(
“Ree - Dull” = Riedel
Omg thank you. I worked for a wine distributor for 2 years and sold Riedel and it drives me crazy when people say Rye-dell 😬
The two winners have a larger surface area, which will help the Pinot reveal its secrets.
Interesting!
For Riesling itself, I like a tall/ thin champagne flute, it focuses flavors nicely. YRMV!
Zweisel Sensory design by Roberto Conterno and son
Missed the most important glass, Zalto Universal
Really?I can’t believe it!
heh. I don't even know how to respond.
Wine Folly well, I think that’s the reason I watching your video, while we learn by drinking and from you😇
Why is it so hard to dwell on one winner clearly?
What’s your take on stemless glasses? 😬
i have a wine glass from IKEA for $4. i love the shape
I'm sorry but there are a lot of faults
Zalto and Gabriel are not AUSTRIAN made Glasses- this is a not true.
Both have only an office in Austria.
As i live very close i would know the factories. They produce in cheap production countries
from Slovakia to Ukraine who knows
:-((
Zwiesel is German made thats correct
Slovakian glass is better anyway ;-)
Pea K yes can be- but its Not ok to say its -made in Austria -if its not.
Um. Wow. I think you're wrong. Still, I'll look into this. I know one of the Zalto owners. We'll get the answer.

@@winefolly Looks like the Gabriels are made in Slovakia, it's on their FAQ webpage. At least it's not China...
@jackandyingadventure
0:57 She wrote a book yet she’s reading on a reminder list?
Hey there - not for the nothing but a cerified sommelier should really be able to properly pronounce the name fot the most distinguished wine glass manuafacture of all time - Riedel.
Tomato tomato.

nah man. I wasn't paid for any of this. It's true, I do sell Gabriel-Glas on our store which i specifically talk about at the end, but you can buy that glass anywhere, and I said that too. This is 100% real critique. If you don't see that, I'm sorry, but you're not paying attention.
Actually, to add to that. If you do want an ad, here it is: BUY MY BOOK! winefolly.com/wine-folly-magnum-edition-the-master-guide-hardcover-ebook/ ;)
