I’d like to thank Germany for transforming the US into the worlds top ground force, and Japan for transforming the US into the worlds top Navy and Airforce🇺🇸🇺🇸 Never Forget.
question for ppl who know more about the USN than me , how deadly/dangerous was it to serve on one of thoses ships ? like what was the rate of suvivability per mission/encounter, was it "safe" or more like tanks you are safe for the most part but still quite vulnerable ?
It varied significantly depending on the type of ship and the stage of the war. During the Guadalcanal campaign (fairly early in the conflict), the USN lost about three times as many men as the US army and marines on the shore. This campaign included probably the biggest single defeat the US navy ever experienced (except for Pearl harbor) which was the battle of Savo Island, where over a thousand sailors were killed and 4 heavy cruisers sunk. Elsewhere, though, the US navy did incredibly well. Japanese anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons and tactics were notoriously bad, while American AA and ASW was the best in the world due to technology like VT fuzes, the philosophy of just strapping on more and more AA guns, and individual excellence from ships and crews like the USS England, which sank 6 Japanese submarines in twice as many days. Despite poor Japanese ASW, 52 American subs were lost in the Pacific, accounting for a casualty rate of about 20%, the highest among any other category. On the surface and outside of Guadalcanal and some other opening parts of the war, the navy was definitely among the safer places to be. Not a single US battleship was sunk after Pearl Harbor. 11 carriers were lost during the war, including 4 fleet carriers, 1 light carrier, and 6 escort carriers, out of 24, 9, and 77 respectively. Most of these were sunk by Japanese submarines, dive/torpedo bomber aircraft, and kamikazes. Some ships such as the USS Juneau and USS Indianapolis were lost with almost all hands, while many of the ships that sank had most of their crews rescued. So to summarize and get closer to actually answering your question, it was very much a mixed bag. 99.9% of the time the crews were safe, but all it takes is a single encounter that materializes in minutes and suddenly an entire ship is gone. That could be a submarine torpedo coming out of nowhere, a Kamikaze diving out of a cloud bank, or the largest battleship mankind's hubris had thought to construct showing up right next to your fleet when it was supposed to be miles away. Regarding things like armor protection for your tank comparison, many crew were behind thick armored bulkheads on ships like heavy cruisers or battleships, but there was no ship that was invincible and all it could take is a single bomb, torpedo, or a couple shells and that protection means nothing, exactly like the tanks. Other vessels such as submarines and torpedoes had no illusion of protective armor and relied on stealth or speed to stay safe. During the Battle off Samar, for instance, a number of American destroyers and destroyer escorts with paper-thin armor sailed right in front of the big guns of the largest Japanese surface fleet to engage in battle with an American force, yet some of those destroyers stayed untouched for an hour or more and half of them escaped with relatively few casualties, while some of the rest were lost with close to all hands. It's a little hard to try and make a cohesive number for survivability, but I think I can answer that fairly well with the story of one of the men whose ship was involved in the Battle off Samar, where the entire American fleet was outmassed by just one Japanese ship (The Yamato) out of dozens. I wish I remembered the sailor's name, but he always came up with betting odds for his ship's likelihood of surviving any given engagement. In the war to date, he'd always given his ship somewhere around a 100:1 chance of making it through safe. At that battle it dropped below parity for the first time. You can learn more about that particular engagement (and naval history in general) by watching Drachinifel's videos on the topic, or by reading "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" by James D. Hornfisher, an excellent historian and story-teller.
