  • Here's David Crosby, singing one of the few great songs he wrote during his drug abyss: Delta. Recorded during Crosby, Stills & Nash's Daylight Again tour in 1982.
Crosby: "It's possible that this is the last song I wrote. I was in a pretty terrible state at the time (1982), which you can tell from the song; it sounds lost. Jackson Browne came by the house where I was; I didn't have a piano so I just sang him what I had and he said, "Jesus, that's a really good one David, you need to finish that". I was in the middle of a downhill slide involving freebase cocaine. I didn't especially want to go outside because I didn't want to bother with anything except taking more drugs. But Jackson really insisted and brought me to Warren Zevon's house where there was a piano. He sat me down at that piano and pulled this song out of me. Whenever I wanted to get up to go to the bathroom and take some more dope, he would say "No, no, finish the song" and he kept me there until I did it. Now when we sing it I thank Jackson for helping me get it out."
    Delta
    Waking
    Stream of consciousness
    On a sleeping
    Street of dreams
    Thoughts
    Like scattered leaves
    Slowed in midfall
    Into the streams
    Of fast running rivers
    Of choice and chance
And time stops here on the delta
While they dance, while they dance
    Instrumental (Pedal Steel Guitar)
    I love the child
    Who steers this riverboat
    Lately he's crazy
    For the deep
    And the river seems dreamlike
    In the daytime
    And someone keeps thinking
    In my sleep
    About fast running rivers
    Of choice and chance
And time stops here on the delta
While they dance, while they dance
    While they dance Aaahh ...
While they dance da, da, da ...
While they dance da, da, da ...
While they dance da, da, da ...
While they dance, dance river dance
While they dance da, da, da ...

One of the greatest songs ever written and recorded by anyone, including David. He seems so fragile and at the same time proud to have written and performed the song. Had CSN not had the turmoil we have all heard about, they may have emerged as one of the ultra-greatest groups in rock history. Their song Wasted on the Way seems to be a direct admittance that, had the drugs and other bullshit interfered with their musical growth, they would be playing today in packed arenas and concert halls. So, so very much wasted on the way. I love them. If Graham and Stills helped him through the drug-infested period of David's life, which was a mirror image of my life too, they would be on stage today and have bank accounts in the hundreds of millions. How tragic and a loss this is for all of us. There was no group with such perfect harmony as CSN.

Oh Graham and Stephen tried to help him get through and overcome the drug addiction. Ya gotta remember, Crosby was a cocaine user for 20 years but had always managed it somehow, probably thanks to his ever flowing revenue stream. But when he started doing base those last couple years, a decision he made because he could no longer snort(deviated septum), he quickly went downhill. Using was so engrained in Crosby it was near impossible for his loved ones to get him clean, but they sure as hell tried and spent a ton of money doing it

Yea Croz had said that this is right around the time he was getting really bad. "Daylight Again" wasn't even supposed to be a CSN record....it was supposed a Stills/Nash record because Croz was in such bad shape and when they submitted it, the label rejected it and said they had to get Crosby back, so they did...they helped him through it, but he did contribute to as Stills said and I'm paraphrasing "he changed some things I liked and some things I wish he didn't but we got through it and it's a great record" RIP Croz, we miss you already.

I had this album in 1983 and Delta always stuck with me. It means something more to me now with the passing of 40 years. To me it's about a man's life which has becomes a "fast running river of choice and chance" and in the moment we have, the here and now on the delta, with the vast ocean before us, we dance. He "loves the child that steers this riverboat" which is his childhood dreams dictating his adult path. But "lately he's crazy for the deep". He's yearning for the ultimate answer, but knows it perhaps cannot be known. Time stops here on the delta while they dance. Sounds like a couple dancing, but may be his youth and older self in the most amazing solitude appearing together at the crossroads of life.
I can almost get through these profound lyrics without losing it. Almost. And now? It's almost impossible to know this profound person named David Crosby, but through his music we can come close. I loved the man.

Now we know “the rest of the story” that David lived and thrived. I’d like to hope that in the darkest of days and those of his supporters remembered this captured moment and how that the music could still win out over the drugs and the addiction and the effects, and that making soulful, touching music that could effects tens of thousands in the amphitheater that night and millions via studio record was still a resounding and reachable reason to keep living and get clean. I’d like to think David recognized the ability to move and reach people INCLUDING HIMSELF through music was a reason to get clean. This was perhaps his most animated and most lucid moment for him of the whole show, and I hope he recognized why, when he needed to make the tough choices.
