    Great vlog good to see that you have your childhood dream in your possession very interesting your history in finding and owning this bike and as a 1966 it looks so clean and the kind of bike for the living room to look at all the time - and I’m sure it’s a blast to ride

    A very nice little bike made even better by its' rarity. They made a lot of interesting & unusual motorbikes in the olde days, it's rather fun just to see them & occasionally the owners will take them for a spin down the road. We have nice enough bikes today but really they all have categories now & they all seem to look alike depending on the type you choose to own. Thanks for showing yours, a little blast from the past. Ric, ontario canada, once bikes are in your blood it can be an incurable addiction, the only relief is to ride as much as possible.

    That's a nice little bike! Back in early '62 I owned a 1959 Raleigh RM1; no clutch and no gears meant that it stalled at every red light and most intersections. Heavy to pedal too, so it soon got traded for a far more practical Vespa 125. Still, it was the start of my (legal) biking; still riding at 79; have an '05 Guzzi 750 Breva.

    It has the continuously variable gearing like the French Mobylette. I had a chap come and stay at my place as a Couchsurfer. He had such a Mobylette which he was using for long distance touring. He rebuilt the engine at my place and fitted new main bearings. I was fascinated by the way the engine moves as the gearing changes. I put a video of that on my channel.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  2 місяці тому

      @Phiyedough There are 3 ball bearings in the cheeks of the clutch pulley which fly outwards due to centrifugal force and close the pulley up, forcing the belt to run higher in the pulley. The centrifugal force is balanced by a spring that the engine pivots against. It's a very simple but clever design. If you want a good read about a guy on a Mobylette try this! mopedtrip.com/

  • @borderlands6606
    @borderlands6606 2 місяці тому

    Looks very similar to the Mobylette SP50 Sports Speciale of the era. The first super-mopeds tended to use stock moped frames and add a tank to give a motorbike appearance. I love them, and would have been all over your Super 50. They went on to make the SP93 and SP95 in a similar idiom. I think Raleigh mopeds were re-badged Mobylettes, at least for a time.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  2 місяці тому +1

      @borderlands6606 Yes, they were built under Motobecane license. The SP50's were a bit more chunkier to look at. Some of the early Raleigh's were badge engineered for sure, but Raleigh made quite a few changes as the years passed by to cater for the UK market,

    Raleigh made some good things back in the day. I ride 70's raleigh push bikes and they are really well made, beautifully finished lugwork and high-end reynolds steel tubing. My only complaint with the bikes is they used their own proprietary threads on a lot of the fasteners so you HAVE to use raleigh fittings, like 26tpi when industry standard was 24tpi. I wonder if their mopeds are similar? Take care not to misplace any cycle part fasteners just in case.

    • @Volcanicbrown1878
      @Volcanicbrown1878  2 місяці тому

      @twostroke350 I have a whole nest of Raleigh pushbikes, Superbe's, Dawn tourist's, I even built a path racer out of a Chilton! Moving onto threads, most stuff on the Mopeds are metric as they were built under Motobcane licence But, there are exceptions!

    Id never seen one of these I well remember the Whisp and Runabout and have actually worked on a few during my time in the M/C trade.
    The photo of Aplins was interesting I remember going in there once or twice they have very sadly closed now just a little over two years ago I think, almost next door to Aplins was L&Ds who were the Royal Enfield and Velocette spares people for the Bristol area.

      @grantbaker3336 Yes, Brian Aplin finally retired after taking over from his father in 1959. He will be missed but all good things come to an end!

    Never seen one - remember the Runabouts though . . . Raleigh's practically all history now; just a whare house for Far Eastern goods.

      @1 hour ago Yes, I still have my original Raleigh Runabout! All gone now, just like nearly all British makes.

    Nah, I find the old little bikes interesting, so you put vids up. 👍 To be honest I can’t understand why anyone would want one ,🤣, especially when some are not exactly cheap! 😱 But thank goodness someone does and I can watch videos about them. A friend had lots of desirable big bikes but when he finished with those he started collecting, mostly British under 200cc bikes. Some even you might never have heard of 🤣. At one point he had as many as 30 at least! But he’s now selling in batches on Old Bike Mart. As he’s sadly not too well. I started on the various Honda C50’ et al. I went all over on that and put the miles in when I was a student! If I had a big garage I might buy another just to go to the shops! But I don’t - so I won’t! 🙄🤣

    Definitely quirky. I seem to remember my aunt had the standard Wisp. The only experience I had with that "power" train was the Mobylette. I seem to remember we couldn't get the ignition timing to stay put! My first bike was my dad's old Norman Nippy. That was quite fast. He fitted a larger carb on a long inlet pipe. Detuned it before he gave it to me! 😂 He had fitted a dual seat. Had to buy a new engine for it, from Pride and Clark I think. Probably wore the old one out! Had other mods, such as battery ignition, because the standard mag coil had burnt out. He rewound it to match the lighting coil and get double the power out. Obviously needed a new ignition coil, so fitted one from a 30s Rover. Oh, and it had a 7 inch headlamp. Blimey, having written this, I think it might have out quirked the Super 50!

      @spamhead That's the sort of things we used to do back in the day! A 7 inch headlamp? Wow! It would nearly need another engine just to power the light!
