I really like how they made this mary red haired, pale and blue eyed and no great beauty( no offense to the wonderful actress) i always hated how they beautified up women in dramas and may them look radically different to how they did in real life. but when she speaks I swear this must have been what the real middle aged mary may have looked and sounded. A true tudor princess.
Yeah I also don't like how they always cast beautiful actors/actresses even for people who weren't pretty or conventionally beautiful irl. Not to mention always thin actors, even for people who were fat irl (ehm Tom Hanks as the Colonel in Elvis this year...) Where is the inclusivity? Where is the "giving chance to everyone"? I love how in the new drama The Serpent Queen about Catherine de Medici they purposefully went for a "plain" actress, and it is an essential part of the storyline "how to survive as a princess if you are not beautiful". Relatable and makes you believe you can be worth a lot even if you are not beautiful.
You think Romola Garai is Plain Jane? The real Mary Tudor looked like Greta Thunberg - with similar ideological fanaticism, parental abuse, comfortable material circumstances, and diminutive stature just to complete the comparison.
Yeah, there is a significant physical difference between the young version and older version of Catherine in the show. I rather meant the younger actress. Who is very talented btw.
Mary was not as radical as many onscreen adaptations make her out to be. She genuinely believed she was doing good. I’m not saying she was perfect (no Tudor was to be fair), but Mary was far less radical than Edward VI & Henry VIII, and she showed far more compassion than her predecessors.
I think that Edward and Elizabeth could be somewhere within the autistic spectrum, from Henry's side (as much as I dislike Anne Boleyn, I don't think she had that kind of problem) and that Mary had been the only one who wasn't.
There are many evil people who believe they are doing good - look at modern equivalents like Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau, Boris Johnson, Klaus Schwab, George Soros, Bill and Melinda Gates, Elon Musk, etc. They all are doing evil, yet call their evil "good" - woe to them. After researching the real Mary, she was just as radical as her half brother Edward. She was, as they say, the opposite extreme. She was a serial killer who used the same excuse "I was doing it for the greater good and the benefit of mankind" - when in reality, she was deceived and boy did God show her how she was wrong in the end. She had no one but herself to blame.
I agree. However, I do like this portrayal of Queen Mary Tudor. Contrary to her depictions, Queen Mary was actually a very attractive woman. Of the two, (Queen Mary Tudor & Queen Elizabeth I)Mary was the fair one in regards to beauty. The descriptions of her have courts marveling at her beauty and statue.

I say this as a former Catholic, and I admit it is a cult, and a very deceptive one. Oh dear and so it begins... Great scene by Romola here. Thanks for posting Lili!
When Mary said those few lines I was like "Oh, boy. Here we go." 😰

Becoming as radical as Edward, who is also purifying by fire ....
Yes yes
I would give my left arm for miniseries or movie with Romola reprising this role.
