If these pubs are surviving on drinkers in their 60's and smokers, they aren't going to survive this decade. Your videos are a historical account of a disappearing world.

@@Northumberlandmag That makes no sense.. Most younger people don't drink/smoke anymore; the same in the US, bars arent as common as they used to be. Remember working early doors as a youngster. It’s the old fellas that get you. Broken, sat alone, with only a pint for company. I used to try and imagine what their story was. Maybe they were happy just to get out the house for a few hours and a bit of peace and quiet. Or maybe there was no one to go back to now. Who knows. I’d always try and strike up a conversation though, some of the most interesting people I met whilst working behind the bar - got a lot more sense out of them than the younger crowd later on. Probably better places they could have been, but it’s hard to change the habits of a life time. At least they had somewhere to go.

I just turned 40 and for some reason, don't ask me how but my face has hardly changed in 20 years so people still think I'm some snot nosed kid when I'm older than them and living with a crippling injury that ruined my life and left me in excruciating pain all day every day. Actually being stuck in a pub sounds awful. When your back is hurt, you realize how painfully uncomfortable most chair are. Bar stools look like torture devices to me.

Down the road is Openshaw. Before 1979, Openshaw had a lot of heavy industries dotted around, steelworks etc. A lot of jobs, good money, and pubs galore. These industries employed men and women from all over East Manchester including Ashton/Tameside. The 1979 general election seen the Thatcher government come to power and that's when the likes of Openshaw, Audenshaw, Gorton, Ashton etc were turned upside down. The country went into a recession, mass redundancies, industries closed down and moved abroad, and unemployment went up. Hardly any money was invested in East Manchester. Towns were effectively abandoned with little money invested in them. Those streets and towns were once great communities, everyone knew everyone else. People moved away for work, shops and pubs closed and that downward spiral continues even today.

Ashton is just another Market town let down by the local Labour authorities allowing thousands of immigrants into the area for the extra they got from central Government for doing so. It creates deep schisms between so called community's. Ashton in the 80s was a well to do area with a good Market and good shop. Not to mention the pubs and night life . We had big name Djs like Jay Wearden and Mike Pickering in in the clubs.

Ashton in the late 1990's was the best night out, going on a pub crawl around the one way system. Always started off in Yate's (now some pet shop) then Feathers over the road (it's still there and the only original pub left there) then down that street to the corner with the Hot Dog bloke and various other bars. What times, what nights. Those were the best nights of my life and it was 25 years ago.
I still remember New Years Eve 1998 into 1999 in that place that's now council offices (53°29'17.07" N 2°05'23.19" W) when Robbie Williams "Angels" came on to see us all into the New Year. Even though I despised Robbie Williams, it is still a moment I can't ever forget. How did we "choreograph" those nights so well when we were totally wasted... I dunno but we did. i can still remember now 25+ years on, sitting opposite that place skinning up absolutely drunk waiting for a taxi. Best nights out down there. That was the mid to late 1990's. Today there's no pubs left except Feathers. There used to be legendary nightclubs like that one near the market that had lock ins. I still remember the bartender, a bald mean looking dude but we all loved him. Locked the doors until 4 AM. F**k man what a time it was.
