We've had 10 years of Tories, so it looks like he supported the opposition be cause he supported the rights of parliament, which the Government was sometimes against. From a partisan point of view, Bercow can certainly be seen as a traitor and from the same perspective, any use of his office resulting in opposition to his then tribe is then of course abuse of power. Even if he stretched the limits of technicalities (which I doubt he did), I don't see how that would have opposed the actual purpose of his office. He was speaker of the house, representing and protecting the entirety of parliament. His job was not to accomodate the government or the majority of the house, but the integrity of the house. But I'm sure you will say that this or that intervention was clearly unconstitional (or wait, is there a constitution?) or aimed at overthrowing the government for some international communist conspiracies tyranny to come? Well I lack the conspiratorial attitude as well as the necessary tribal attachment to agree with that particular view.
@deftly maybe That's not democratic though, its more of a republic. Real democracy is where every citizen votes and has a say on everything. I'm not entirely sure how the UK government works but I know these guys, the house of commons, is basically similar to America's congress. Where each member is elected by the people to represent a state or area, just like senators and house representatives. Also the speaker *does* have authority over the people attending, he is the one who speaks for the whole and makes sure everyone stays in line, he doesn't pick a side or voice an opinion. In my opinion democracy is not great because too many opinions come into play and it can be hard to come to a consensus. Just imagine the house of commons going over brexit but on a country wide scale, would just be chaos. That's why having a republic with elected officials would be more efficient but still it can be tedious.
The title Speaker of the House should be renamed the Bercow of the House....and Mr. Bercow should be barred from retirement in ORDER to keep ORRDAAH in the House for all time!
I’m American and see this way of politics very different than how it’s carried out here. However this is arguably less formal than American politics, it’s impossible to be mad at it; consequently I cannot stop watching these damn videos😂
I enjoy the UK parliament compared to our own - even if it is louder/more rambunctious, I can clearly see and hear that MPs are participating and *listening* to some degree.
The element of chaos involved simply stems from many, MANY centuries of rules and a slightly convoluted system. I assure you that it isn't always like this, and there are actually a huge number of rules of what they're allowed to say and do. It's really quite fascinating

@@danielellis7658 He may be denied peerage because of several scandals surrounding him. I have no idea what's true of that (I'm not even British) but in any case I'll miss his phenomenal eloquence if he steps down.

@@SolarWebsite it's possible but unlikely. Many speakers have been caught in scandals in their time in the chair and still managed to get peerage
