    Here’s a sample of 95.5 WPLJ New York when it was playing “New York’s Best Rock. It’s Fall 1976. Courtesy of Big Apple Airchecks this is a tightly scoped recording spanning a few days. Heard on this aircheck, in order:
    Jim Kerr, Tripp Reeb, & **Jimmy Fink.
    In short, this is part of the airstaff that so many fondly remembered. The boundaries of what WPLJ considered New York’s Best Rock is pretty wide. In this era, the station was not a “Hard Rock” station, but it played many different genres that came under the “Rock & Roll” umbrella, rather than just what is considered Rock today. So on WPLJ, you could hear artists you’d expect to hear, like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Chicago & Jimi Hendrix, along with many soft rock artists of the era, like James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, Chuck Mangione, & Steely Dan. There was even some R&B artists that Rock fans of the era would know, like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie & The Commodores & The Temptations. Even a few pop songs from artists like The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Barbara Streisand & Barry Manilow. This blent of music gave WPLJ great numbers in this era. They kept the going until 1979 when the musical landscape was changing, and they moved to a harder Rock approach.
    Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008! One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
    After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
    We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here! If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!
    In addition to sharing audio from my 40 years in broadcasting, we also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also!

    this was my favorite radio station when I was a kid. We had a local rock station near me, but WPLJ was the best. I remember I think it around 1981, and one of the DJs said something like ...we are kickin ASS. I couldn't believe my ears..I was like can you say that on the radio....

    Ended up in an elevator back stage at Giant's Stadium--Bruce show. Bruce did those intermissions. My buddy is Bruce's cousin so we got back there. I got purposely separated to hang a bit longer and so walk into the elevator and hear this voice--I am thinking, why is the radio voice talking about getting a Stoli's in the lounge upstairs. It was Jimmy Fink and Tony Pig--he was the WNEW DJ. I chatted with them--and annoying 18 year old. Jimmy offers me a drink from the bar and I say "whatever you are having." He gets me a double Stoli with ice. I woke up two hours later and the stadium was empty! ))

    Wow this was great to listen to. WPLJ at its softest. Also very current oriented. The oldest songs were The Beach Boys-California Suite and The Who from Quadrophenia- both from 73 and Cat Stevens from 72, Simon and Garfunkel (70). No classic Beatles, Stones, Zep, etc.. I think the first part of the aircheck is mostly from October 16, 1976 with the Jimmy Fink part from the 17th based on the mention of the World Series game 2 which was played on the 17th. Super tight aircheck. A few songs that were not introed by title or backsold include Something About You-Boston and She's My Baby-Wings and The Only Living Boy in NYC- Simon and Garfunkel

    Hi Ellis thanks for posting all of these great air checks. I recall hearing Trip Reeb on WSHE Miami; I never knew he worked in New York...was he a part-timer?

      I don’t know when Alan was on PLJ. I’m guessing it was before he did mornings in the AM at WABC. I would guess early 80s.

    I think this was when WPLJ was transitioning into Top 40 from heavy metal.

    • @EllisFeaster
      @EllisFeaster  4 роки тому

      Steve W No, that transition was in summer 1983. This was the mid 1970s. WPLJ in that era played a wide variety of music.

      Steve W Understood! My memory has gone to mush, but for some reason, the one thing I remember is dates, and when things happen.
