- He's back! Sir Tony Robinson returns to Time Team to investigate the US 101st Airborne Division in Britain. Time Team have been invited to Aldbourne, Wiltshire, by Operation Nightingale, on the 80th anniversary since Easy Company were stationed here in 1943, shortly before D-Day.
Working alongside service men and women from the US and UK, the team have just over a week to investigate the camp, once home to the iconic 'Band of Brothers'.

@@RHCole Phil never wore a Stetson - it was an Australian shearers hat - I am a hat person my self and have one exactly like it - and a Stetson bought in Houston Texas 😉 and they look nothing alike 😁
TONY! Awesome to see and hear him again, he was always the soul of Time Team. Gus is a great guy, and is growing into his role as presenter, but nobody can replace Tony with his wit, enthusiasm and snarky humor. I'll always miss those we've lost thru the years, Mick especially, but seeing the former "youngsters" like Matt/ Naomi and Raksha as they're matured and aged into proper seasoned veterans and leaders now brings a sense of continuation. Time Team wasn't just a "one and done" kind of adventure, after all these years it's proven to be something more, with generations invested in this and willing to carry it on hopefully for many more decades to come.

This was the most incredible project that I have ever been a part of and was grateful to have my oldest/closest military brother be able to join and rep the 101st. I didn’t just gain friends, I gained family. Thank you Time Team, Richard Osgood, and all who made our visit possible. Truly an unforgettable experience that I’ll cherish for all my days 🇺🇸🏴🇬🇧
That was my favorite part of the episode - that both UK and US servicemembers (active and retired) got to participate. I was a bit jealous! (USN 1991-2002)

US Navy retired and WWII history geek. I must say I'm a bit jealous of you, the US and UK vets, and the active duty folks had the privilege of participating in the dig.
A sad reminder of those that are no longer with us from Time Team but a happy moment seeing familiar faces back with the team. A fitting tribute to the "Band of Brothers" and the hardships they endured to leave us a legacy of freedoms so many take for granted today. True heroes

I was lucky to have Forrest Guth as my friend, he retired to Delaware and I befriended him in his last years of his life. A wonderful man.
There was an easy camaraderie with the original Time Team. This current version is more numerous but (I think) overly serious attitude which could be moderated by a bit of the earlier humour.

It gives me great pleasure to see Matt get a co-presenter credit right after Sir Tony's presenter credit. Matt's recognition has been too long in coming. But better last than never !:-)
Matt was always so willing to volunteer to be the living history subject, whether slave or soldier, he deserves it!
I love seeing him become one of the "responsible adults" on these digs; I remember the episodes where he would admit to being different degrees of hungover after having a few too many in the local the night before 😂

I live 15 miles from Aldbourne, if youd like me to put some flowers on the village war memorial on your behalf it would be my pleasure and an honour.
My Mother was born in Aldbourne maiden name Orchard she can make a "great Lardy cake ", remember's all "to this day" even at the age of a 102. Some of the family are buried in the churchyard.
The day of her birthday 3/9/1921 she joined up to the RAF & was stationed at Kemble Airfield Wiltshire. she always said the Americans were Great.
Not many orchards about. My family tree is around Bristol and surrounding area. Lots of military background also
I'm a Yank Navy veteran, married to Yank retired Air Force. His mother is from Northampton and tells stories of a little girl during the war. She ended up marrying a Yank Air Force stationed in Northamptonshire in the 1950's. Was wonderful seeing both perspectives explored in this episode.
This is a great recreation of the original Time Team - yes, I know that Phil’s hat is no longer with us, and Mick is a wonderful memory, but Tim, you have brought us as close as is possible today. And Matt Williams is emerging as a worthy presenter. And even better, the ever-wonderful Prof. Carenza. Sir Tony has lost nothing of his wicked wit. Long may he reign!

Phil has been rather busy being involved in a major dig at the Battle of Waterloo site for 2 or 3 years. He has been working with ex forces veterans, helping them to become involved archaeological digs.....
SIR TONY! So wonderful that Tony R. was on board for this one. Somehow his voice belongs to Time Team. All of the dedicated team members belong to TT but he was the face and voice. It's unbelievable that the 'old crew' made it possible through Patreon. Quite the feat to pull off. Now Phil Harding has to come back for one episode. Not doing much but just walking around explaining and needling the younger ones. And Tony. That would be Time Team heaven. But PH is tied up with his French project, so it might not be possible. But we can all dream that one day it might be possible.
So very odd to see Matt, the young archeologist only a few years (decades) ago jumping into a pit or a real time re-enactment in ancient military - now with wisps of gray in his hair as he helps direct the project. Good form, sir :)
So many of the original team members have gone on to achieve recognition & doctorates in their respective fields of specialization, with special recognition for geophysics (how many times did John want to smack Tony but didn't)

Our nations will always be like brothers and this episode was moving in many ways for me as I grew up in the area the nearby village of Woolstone near white horse hill . My father flew with the RAF in Wellington medium bombers from Harwell from 1940-43 and was a part of an RAF base radar unit that landed on Omaha beach on D-day along side the Americans and suffered heavy casualties . Not expecting the end with the passing of the flag. Having been a receiver of a memorial flag, tears are steaming. Not just for the present but those that are being remembered and memorialized for their time, service and sacrifice. Thank you Time Team and all who have brought this piece of history to life.
It had me streaming here in South Australia too mate. Beautifully and soberingly poignant at the same time. That narrated passage of the guard and the officers really caught me.
What a generation. They fought and defeated actual fascists and other inhumane and brutal nationalists, with a tendency in the years that followed to downplay and diminish their generation’s great sacrifices and the appalling trauma that they absorbed. They secured the world to pass custody of it, intact on to following generations.
‘Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.’
Wonderful to see Tony! He has certainly been missed. The original cast was a wonderful group of people so engaging and full of real information. Thanks for bringing Tony. He holds the show together.

Thanks to you and yours for your service. Dad was an Army vet, my daughter was in the Navy, and my grandson was in Air Force. My granddaughter is engaged to a Marine. Got them covered, minus the Coast Guard.

As someone who followed the Band of Brothers before the show came out, having read many of the books from WWII and met many of the vets at various events D-day and otherwise, this was intense, knowing that those men of Easy in particular have all passed on makes it that much more. Time gets us all, but at least memories left behind, but to those who never had the chance to return from this or other events of its kind. There will always be remenants of what you sacrificed. Thank you TimeTeam and Operation Nightingale.
I am going to be showing this to my brother Ted; hoping he will watch this! He was 101st Airbourne during the Iranian Hostage Crisis during President Carter's term! Webster was a beautifully eloquent man. His writings make the experiences come to life.
My grandfather was Army Airborne with the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII. My wife's grandfather was with the 28th Infantry Division and landed on Omaha Beach. He was eventually wounded during the Battle of St. Lo and captured by the Germans, spending the remainder of the war as a POW. The end scene of this Time Team brought tears to my eyes. It was great to see Sir Tony back.

My step father William T Wingett was a part of Easy Company. He appears in Band of Brothers as well. He carried a 35mm camera during the war and had hundreds of photo's that I looked at on many occasions. Programs like this bring back memories of those days and his album.
Have his photos been archived and/ or published? They would be very historically significant.

Its my understanding the Lucas had access to them prior to doing the filming but have no idea what if any role they may have played.
He was a machine gunner and tells a story about he and another guy on a bike riding around Bastogne try to shoot a rabbit for supper.
Get those photos scanned in before they deteriorate! I'm sure there's many people who would love to see them

This Special where Tony Robinson's back to delve into the US 101st Airborne Division's stint in Britain, and I've got to say, it’s a total treat. Tony’s got that knack for digging into history that's just unmatched. The new Time Team line-up is alright, but there's something about Tony’s way of doing things that’s classic Time Team. Big props to Tony for keeping the history geek in me totally stoked. Can’t wait for more stuff like this!
This was a wonderful video. My father in law and my wife’s step mother lived in Toccoa, and remember visiting the museum and seeing the horse stalls at the museum and the rest. He was army. I gave him a copy of the book that came out for the TV series. When several surviving members of Easy Co. showed up at the museum, they signed it. My father was in the 508 PIR of the 82d Airborne and was in the third class ever of the parachute school at Ft. Benning, GA. He survived the war because of a shattered lower left leg, so he didn’t jump on D-Day. His brother was a tank platoon commander and lasted till Friday the 13th of April 1945. He was killed in Germany 13 days before Hitler died. He’s buried in Maastricht. Thanks for doing this fine show and recognizing it all.

My dad was from Pittsburgh, PA and was stationed in England in 1943. United States Army Signal Corp and a prosecutor for the Trial Judge Advocate of the Northern United Kingdom 🇬🇧. In Hull. This show really shows why my dad chose to apply for Officer Training Candidate School. He mentioned better accommodations and food.

As a proud Time Team Patreon member, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m usually more interested in ancient history (especially the Romans), but this was fascinating, and told a personal story too.
I live not too far from Upottery in Devon, and had heard about the connection with the 101 Airborne, which was mentioned at the end of this episode. Also, my mother in law has a house in a small village near Utah beach; whenever I walk along that stunning beach it is hard to imagine the dreadful things that happened there all those years ago. The village celebrates D Day every year, and we will never forget the sacrifices made by these brave men.
On a lighter note, I chuckled when Tony mentioned “a cunning plan”

Having Tony there was great, and made it feel original Time Team. But that should not take away from the huge contribution Matt has just made.
Thank you for honoring American servicemen by doing this dig. I hope they did not cause too much trouble in the village while they were there. I had Uncles who fought in WW II. We were lucky. They all came home. We lost one cousin who was a piolet in the battle over the channel. God bless all of you, without England we would be speaking German.

My Grandfather fought in the British Royal Marines, and his cousin (William Dobson - 12th Battalion Yorkshire, The Parachute Regiment) is buried in Ranville cemetery having been killed on the 6th June 1944 (D-day). I recall the stories he told me of WW2 and immense pride in the service he gave to his country. Thank you Time Team for remembering these heroes, a generation for which I will forever feel indebted.

BRILLIANT! - Such a compelling story that of 101st Airborne division, a thread of history and a glimpse of World War 2 magnified by an incredible TV series that resonates - Simply put, this was so informative, engaging and poignant, doesn't get done any better than this 20 years on, with a mix of new, and familiar old faces, The Time Team family and returning Tony, it's magic... Simply brilliant!
My father and his three brothers were pilots in WWII, (although Dad, the youngest, had just finished training and was slated for Japan when the war ended). All four made it home. Seeing the folded triangular flag being respectfully passed by even a small contingent was so reminiscent of each of their funerals. That was a powerful ending.
This was a moving episode. Thank you for sharing a piece of the season and the finds with us!

I would imagine the hat badge was a trade. It's pretty common now to carry extra or old pins and badges to swap with other units you meet. What a neat find.

A beautiful presentation. My mother was a US army flight nurse in WW 2. She was stationed first in England early in 1944. She told me of being treated so well by the local people in the town near the airbase where they were stationed. Thanks for the great video.

Indeed. "The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there." - It's fascinating to consider how much has changed in the eighty years since the 101st Airborne were shipped over to England even if much of Aldbourne hasn't.
I had the same reaction, and then realized that the old men I assumed were going to be soldiers were actually only 6 and 7 at the time of the camp.
It’s sobering to think that the Falklands War is as far in the past to us now as WW2 was during the Falklands War. (Also that Kylie Minogue has had chart hits for FIVE decades!)

Having grown up in Aldbourne and having a huge interest in the stay of the 101st, this is immense.
I met the veterans of which have all now unfortunately passed away when they came over for their reunion tours, even making appearance in a newspaper myself when meeting Bill Guarnere.
Forrest Guth was the first veteran i met. All of them were absolutely lovely, incredible characters and the talks little me had with them still impact me now.
Aside from meeting the veterans, i went around a lot of the woodlands with a metal detector. I have a good collection of spent .30-06 casings and .50 from their training.
So, thank you for doing this, a lot of incredible memories as a young lad surrounded doing this stuff (on a MUCH smaller scale) in Aldbourne.
My heart sang to see and hear Sir Tony! No-one can present and engage with us like he can. Thank you for coming back! I love Time Team and all our favourite people from the original series have become so familiar they warm my heart, I feel comfy and cosy watching them. All of the new TT are lovely too and I’m just so thrilled we can still enjoy this incredibly important and enjoyable programme.
It's great how the current US Vets were involved in the dig ! So good to see Sir Tony back. There are actually quite a lot of hidden and lost from memory D-Day preparation camps and also POW camps in the UK. Recently found one at Crowcombe Heathfield in Somerset.

It was great to see Sir Tony again in a full special. I'm really enjoying the blending of the old and new Time Team crew together. They're stepping into their groove. My grandfather was in the 82nd airborne division and jumped with 101st East Company. D-Day, Battle of the Bulge etc. he liberated a concentration camp as well couldn’t be prouder

We’re fans of Band of Brothers series and the book. This was a special treat to watch Time Team excavate where E Company lived. An even bigger treat to see Sir Tony Robinson hosting along with Matt. Great work Time Team!

This special has meant so much to me. The 101st Airborne Division is located about 40 miles from me. My brother trained there as did one of my best friends from high school, class of 61. My grandson lives in Clarksville also. It was great seeing Matt Williams taking charge. I suffered with him in all the dirty, awful things you all put him through in the early days. I felt so sorry for him. Thanks for all your work.

Lt Col Spiers, was British, from Scotland. He and his family emmigrated to the USA when he was a child. When he was stationed in Wiltshire, England, he met his Englsih wife, and had a child by that marriage. His son would go onto be a Lt Col in the British Army, the Rifle Regiment. These were young men in their teens and early 20s. So much respect for them! 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

Me and the missus (30's) recently started rewatching TT with our dinner starting over from Season1 Episode1 every other day, its so nice to know we still have Tony and Phil (waterloo uncovered) and other crew still around, treasures themselves.

This is really humbling. My father and all his side of the family is from Aldbourne. I went to school there in the early 70’s. That playing field I played on as a kid and my dad is from Farm Lane where the battalion were stationed. So good to see this. Absolutely fascinating.

Really powerful tribute to the men who served in the 101st. Love the fact that present day veterans are involved. There is more to this story but it would be a real challenge for time team, digging on some of the key sites from D-Day and beyond that these heroes were involved in.

Superb as always! Here in the States, they run a marathon of Band of Brothers every Memorial Day (end of May). It is our family tradition to watch it every year. ❤
That's cool , if you ever get the chance watch our remembrance day service in London on the 11th November the march past the cenotaph is very moving .

As great as the recent new time teams have been, this episode took me back to the time team of old, watching on a Sunday evening. It may just have been Tony's narration or the fact that it was a story I'm relatively familiar with through books and of course the incredible TV series. I could almost see Mick standing to the side listening and nodding.

My wife's father jumped on D day into France... Was by himself, lost, and no idea where his comrads were!!! Can you imagine??? He did meet up with one on his brothers the next day using a crackerbox clicker, found a frienly farmer who allowed him use of his horse so he and his buddy could ride into town to meet up with their forces. He said he turned the horse around, swatted his behind and the animal took off for home. He said that was the best horse he'd ever ridden, and that animal most probably saved their lives!!! My mothers 1st cousin (a B-17 pilot shot down over Germany) is also listed in the book at St Pauls Cathedral which I was priveledged to see back in 2017! Wonderful to see OUR troops remembered in your country!!! Great video TT, Thank You!!! 🙂
