Great video showing what the left hand is doing. Im currently working on 7 or 8 of your 10 lesson videos. I've got Cripple Creek memorized and down, just slow. Working on Banjo in the Holler now. Love your lessons. I'm now a. 48 year old BEGINNER BANJO PLAYER! Who would have ever thought a Welder could be a banjo player? Thanks Jim
Just turned 73 a month ago and decided it's time I learned to play the banjo. Found your channel and am starting with "Beginners Bluegrass Banjo Lesson 1". What I have seen so far I like. You explained and showed the fingering in great detail and will practice and probably drive the wife crazy. Thanks. Thumb up and have subscribed.
Love your vids and teaching methods, a friend gave me a banjo over a year ago, I couldn't get a grip of it, and then I found you, I'm at the start of your channel and you've taught me cripple creek, I'm slow atm, but I'm doing it! Thank you, never thought I'd ever be able to learn an instrument, I look forward t progressing with your channel
I'm a beginner, but one thing I found helps is a light dusting of my left hand with baby powder to help my left hand slide more easily up and down the neck. Trick from my old pool hustling days :). All these little things that you show us can be a great benefit to us novices. THANKS!
@@JimPankey I was told that Scruggs G-lick was pulling off the 4string. Everyone I watch just frets it. What is the correct way? Or does it matter at all? Please reply to this thank you for your time and help.
Jim, love your videos & your teaching style. So many gems of knowledge! What is the name of the song you play at the end of this video? I've got to learn it. Thanks and please keep these videos coming.
@@JimPankey I just went through your Cripple Creek Expansion Pack video. That video made it come together for me. That and practicing more and playing faster. You're a great teacher.
Thanks for left hand tips. Do you have any video on right hand stretches / warmup? I’ve been practicing your beginner series and started getting trigger finger in my right hand. Thanks for any suggestions
Check out Lisa Flores. She and I did some live streams together. Her channel has all the exercises condensed: ua-cam.com/users/lisaflores You can also find the live streams we did on my channel
In most of your videos you demonstrate sitting down while most banjo player perform standing up. At what point do you encourage students to start playing banjo standing vs sitting?
That's a good question. True, I do teach sitting. I can't recall ever doing a lesson where I've stood. I remember practicing standing almost as soon as I had a strap. I would stand in front of the record player so I could stop and start it. My advice? Stand up -- especially if you know you're going to be playing in a band that performs.
Thanks Jim, Iv come to be aware of my arm position on my rest and it sure helps me to set up quickly. I’m currently working on level four leaning cripple creek. But my social finger on my left hand doesn’t slide well ( it’s does but ) I seem to be touching the second string on some of my slides. And it’s given me a twangy sound on on about my forth turn. I will try this to see what I can accomplish. Thanks again. Hey Jim- do you have a designated site or place or a video where we can get answers from you Sir.? Hooties playing banjo
Hi Jim. I've got a question. Due to some misfortunes, I have only two fingers on my left hand, index and traffic finger. For the past 12 years I've tried to get into guitar and as you might guess, that issue has left me at a disadvantage and somewhat handcuffed in what I can and cannot play. But, for lack of a better term, music is my passion, it's what I think, it's what I crave. Do you think banjo would be a little easier for my situation? I'm very curious and willing to put in the time, but I'm hesitant to drop a few hundred on a 'jo only to discover that it's not that much more accommodating than the guitar.
Yup, you can do it. A few years ago I was suffering with a terrible ulnar entrapment and couldn’t feel my pinky or ring fingers. I actually played a contest (and won) using just two fingers on my left hand. Also, look up Barry Abernathy… I think he might give you a lot of hope.
@@JimPankey Thank you for the reply, the inspiration, and the suggestion to check out Barry. Looks like I'm going to be spending a little money soon. :)
Hey Jim , I am learning so much from yer videos, but I gotta know........ do you have a Hodaka mototcycle or just a t-shirt, I have a 1973 Dirt Squirt in the garage with a super rat top end on it, my very first motorcycle purchase, I was 6 years old, anyway thanks again!
Hello Jim is you banjo a left hand banjo? I was wondering should the fifth string always point up? I’m a lefty and need some help understanding what a left hand banjo is.
Thanks for the hand holding tip 😂 but what about a tip preventing fat fingering other strings unintentionally? I was expecting you to say something since you brought it up. I have small hands and this is a problem for me. I try to use the “tip” of each finger but still, it’s almost impossible in a lot of situations. Thank you! Love your videos!
Hi Jim..To celebrate my turning 76, I've decided to take up the banjo. Never held one. Am left handed, wanting to take lessons but all lessons that I find are from the "opposite side of the plate". Do you offer left handed lessons? Thanks. Linda
I’ve noticed my main problem is my index finger is always slightly touching the bottom string and makes it sound bad. I don’t have a strap yet so I think that is a big part of it because I am kind of holding up the banjo while playing.
@@JimPankey ah maybe its yout capo thank you! Also Jim now that I have you here i have a little side question. I have been going through your learn to play bluegrass for a while now. I have in total learned three parts to cripple creek. The one where we go slide open hammer, slide open slide, and slide 3x and end it with a pull off. You didn't really specify what order that is played in, or at least i didnt really pay that much attention to that who knows hahaha. If you could tell me in what order these are played I would be very grateful!
@@felixthefat1503 There are two parts. Low part (the bit I taught first) and the high part (the part with the 2-5 slide on the 1st string). You do each part twice. Go back and review lesson 4. :)
Another great video, Jim! Would you maybe consider a tutorial on how to play the banjo part in the Stable Song by Gregory Alan Isakov? I really want to be able to play it with my friend who plays the guitar, but I just can't find any good tutorial videos or tabs on how to play the banjo part. Here's a link to the song: ua-cam.com/video/7BJ7MDOmLPE/v-deo.html As far as I can tell the guy is using a flat pick on a 6-string banjo, but I figured it should be possible to do produce something similar 3-finger style on a 5-string surely? Hello Jim is you banjo a left hand banjo? I was wondering should the fifth string always point up? I’m a lefty and need some help understanding what a left hand banjo is.
My banjo is made to be played right handed. 5th string points up, as you say.
A left handed banjo would have the fifth string on the opposite side.
