    this is all interesting but still in my view Taleworlds made companions too weak and they barely level up in playthroughs. For instance army surgeon would certainly have higher medicine skill, I'd say 200 at least. So would engineer. Some experienced veteran would have basic skill of scouting, tactics, engineering, first aid, at least 50. It's a bit ironic that lords have high skills that specialized people don't, seems unrealistic.

    • @Strat-Guides

      I mostly agree with that - combat abilities from a high level companion is way below what my expectations are, medicine and tactics are really really hard to level up and most skills are a real grind for companions. I do find them to be quite powerful in some respects though - a good governor can really turn a fief from a dump into a money maker quickly. I really like scouting and steward companions too, but medicine and engineering are rough lol I hope they rework medicine and engineering before release!

    One thing to remember: Trade has a lot of quartermaster perks, so Spicevendor is the best quartermaster possible. At least the Trade 50 "Caravan Master" perk is really useful for the Quartermaster, so its worth it to send quartermasters to run caravans if they lack that skill

    Thanks for this guide. I struggle a lot with choosing the right governor in every situation. I’ve always focused militia for defense or engineers for build speed while neglecting loyalty. I had no idea it was this important. Though, I won’t look forward to grinding their skills. I wish companions with active town projects would get engineering exp cause it just makes sense; I hate training engineering.

      I agree with everything you said - spot on! Loyalty is actually the most important stat - you want it at 100 at all times if possible. You get huge bonuses to tax income, building speed, etc. when you are at 100. It's such a pain to grind out the perks for companions, but I hope the first episode on how to farm XP for companions helps out. It should help cut down on some of the grind :) Thanks as always for watching and helping with the algorithm!

    The real meta way of playing the game is going to be this:
    Step 1: Grind to a point where your party uses up no food and you receive wages back.
    Step 2: Wait in town for 200 years, only pop out to find spouses for your children, grand-children, nephews, nieces, etc.
    Step 3: Mold every family member into the perfect fit for any role.
    Step 4: Level them all up.

    I've never actually gotten far enough in a campaign to conquer towns of more than 2-3 different cultures... But the way I usually set it up is I have by brother (Vlandian), my wife (Imperial), and his wife (Battanian or Aserai) be geared towards governorship as much as possible, generally getting loyalty and prosperity buffs with a few militia and garrison cost perks sprinkled in. And they do a solid job - 150 Bow and 175 Athletics is very achievable and can stop the loyalty bleeding pretty well, - it's my own food and money management and general impatience that's the problem lol fantastic work on this man! Excited to hear your thoughts on your own companion picks in your campaigns

      That's a very smart move - you can expand into several different areas without worrying about rebellions! Lol I know what you mean about own money management. A few things about this video specifically.
    First of of all , this is a very advanced topic. Prolly one of the last things anyone would try to achieve in campaign. Also , without any cheats involved , levelling a companion for some of those builds is only possible in theory. In reality , he might die from old age before you're done.
    Secondly , either something changed since you created the list , or there's some RNG involved when it comes to wanderer stats. For example , my Empire surgeon had intelligence 3 instead of 4 and was level 11. Other wanderers could have the same stats as in your list , such as the Aserai Scholar. But not all. Just a friendly warning to others that might be invested into this in their playthroughs.
    3rd. It's worth noting that some of those companion versions might not even spawn for a long time , ever since early access it always seemed random and even though it's more normalised nowadays , it's still possible not to get some. For example , my last campaign , quite deep into end-game , main character is old and still , no ''knowing'' wanderer spawned at all.
    Lastly , despited all of the above , this is amazing work , can't even begin to imagine how much time you invested into it , thank you. Liked + subbed.

    Only thing I'd have added here are all the companions who can start with a loyalty skill at base. Sometimes, you don't have time to train a dedicated governor, depending on what's going on, so knowing who you can grab that has a +1 loyalty skill can be a big help. I suppose people can just look it up, but based on some of the comments I'm seeing some people think that you really need to grind a companion to being the best version of these builds displayed, where in actual play being functional out of the gate, if less effective, has some comparative benefits, especially for players who won't grind anyway.
    Vlandian Black (1), Aserai Wastes, Aserai Falcon, Aserai Golden, and Aserai Wanderer (2) all qualify, and tells me that, in the majority of games, conquering Aserai should be easier than other nations because you're likely to have at least 2 companions you can hire, respec, and instantly use as a governor for more Loyalty than base. Sadly, all these companions start at a relatively high base level, so they're not your long-term choices if you intend to grind the cream of the crop displayed above, but I know for some of you this will be a far more practical list.
    One thing I'll point out about the above list is 3 of them happen to be your high Tactics companions, so can have utility early in a campaign as caravans, which they should be best-in-slot at, and then be transitioned into a governor role once you need them to be, so they have merit beyond just having +1 loyalty over a generic hire.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому +1

      The biggest problem is not being able to respec nobles :( If they change that, it becomes much easier since we can just marry someone with the appropriate skill levels. Wanderers are good in that regard but generally don't have as much skill.
      Yeah you're 100% right, those are great companions to look for!

  • @rrron

    Nice work on the guide. Party leaders have always been difficult to generalize. As part of your army most of the time it makes sense to focus on stewardship and medicine. Wages and casualty rates are some of the most visible impact on the game. I used to have one operating independently on bandit hunting duty with cunning as the main stat as it covers scout (for move speed), tactics (for autoresolve) and roguery (gained from prisoner ransoming and hiring). All good until he gets drafted into another army so its hard to say if the decision made a difference compared to another companion who is not so religiously spec-ed.

    I remember another video where you hop between fiefs that are under attack that have Fian Champions in the Garrison,
    if Garrison wage reduction for mounted troops applies to Khan's Guards and my math is correct then the daily wages would be:
    1530 a day for 200 Fian Champions at 55% wage reduction
    630 a day for 200 Khan's Guards at 85% wage reduction
    which would actually be insane to have 400 Khan's Guards for less than half the price of 200 Fian Champions

    The perks are just stupidly dispersed. Why does a 250 skill in archery increase tax? Are they afraid to be shot at with arrows from afar by the marksman governor if they don't pay? The government perks have to be mostly concentrated in a management skill tree which is leveled f.e. by schooling (like a companion being parked in a fief, buying expensive books, ...) and ... governing. And btw it is not the greatest design that you need a companion as governor. There should be local notables for this.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому +3

      Lol I've been saying this exact thing since I did the full perk testing series almost a year ago :) A lot of them don't make much sense - they give 10% damage increase at level 50, but then that same stat line at 250 gives 2%???? I guess so lol

  • @flaggy185
    @flaggy185 9 місяців тому

    For me, the best companion for leading an army is a companion with high level of medicine
    Administrator levels up by itself, so does explorer (its not that big of a deal), and being engineer is mostly optional unless you want them to siege by themselves
    Medicine is the hardest skill to level up and the best to keep the soldiers alive, and since steward levels up alone, you are better recruiting high medicine companions for your army groups
    Ignoring the Golden companion, which is always the best for everything...

    In terms of empire culture bonus (-garrison cost), in my games it applies only to the Empire fiefs. Even as a Aserai lord, owning any Empire fief gives the - garrison cost. Being an empire lord doesn't give non-empire towns - garrison cost. Same applies to governors, empire governors don't give - garrison costs,
    With the right governor perks, you can have 0 garrison costs or even make money from your garrison.
    Adding in bonus to taxes, you can make a lot of money per day from a good highly prosperous town.

    One thing I could never fully figure out - how do the companion's positive / negative traits (Generous, Calculated, Cruel, impulsive etc.) play into the campaign?
    the one thing I've notices is far is that if a cruel companion ends up leading a party that you take in your army to siege a town, then there will be a cost in influence if you want to show mercy to the city or to plunder it, if it goes against their traits.
    I also take it that some of the negative perks are needed for companions that would be put in charge of the crime alleys in the various towns.
    Beyond these, do those traits matter? I'm thinking that they would influence the companion's behavior when promoted to small clan leader - an honorable companion would not desert while a devious / backstabbing one would gladly jump ship to another kingdom.

    Not sure if it is a new one or not but Vlandian Wainwright fits the Max Prosperity and Income as well as speed builder. Might be better than some since they start with decent 2 hand, 80 engineering and 343223 starting AP. Either 10 or 11 spawn cant remember now.

    • @richardperry3293
      @richardperry3293 2 роки тому

      Also might be interesting to see what the max 'cheapest' governor you can make with each of the better companions. I had a lucky spawn and got seven listed at levels 10 and 11. Another six at level 12 and five at level 13. What free focus points they start with and best way to allocate them as they level up to get the max amount of governor perks easily. While the 200+ perks all look great its a massive grind for them, especially for 'casual' players. But if you could find one with 12-15 governor perks spread across a few 100-125 and a few 75s skills then you have something. basically a jack of all trades governor with maybe a decent focus on one of the ones you have done here.

    With the new changes to medicine what's the best way to use it now, is it worth having a companion just for that or should you just build your character to max out intelligence. At that point wouldn't you also want to just spec into all intelligence perks anyway so you don't need an independent steward, surgeon, engineer? Or is it still beneficial to delegate some perks even when maxing a stat?

    • @Strat-Guides

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому

      I covered how to level up skills in the first episode of this series, not sure if that's what you're asking? I can give you a quick recap, but I recommend watching that one (It's time stamped so you can skip to these parts). Tactics is leveled by companion leading a party and their troops getting kills in battle. Leadership is easier now, just get kills with non-bandit troops. You also get a little XP for recruiting prisoners (You can give prisoners to companions to convert for you), recruiting troops from towns and villages and leading an army. Roguery XP is earned by having bandit troops in their party get kills, raiding villager party, raiding caravans and raiding a village.

    • @ShummaAwilum
      @ShummaAwilum 2 роки тому +2

    It is pretty remarkable how complex this game is under the hood. It really is a genre unto itself which combines FPS combat, RPG and strategy/tactics.
    The unfortunate thing is how many of the core features are still quite simplistic. Take for example "companions." You can be a Monarch, one of the most powerful persons in Calradia, and you are still going to have to go out there and hustle to find the right companion. Not only that, but the selection is no better than when you were a vagabond refugee with barely 1000 Denars in your pocket. Even worse, the methods to instruct them to train themselves in any particular area (not to mention the facility of them doing it) are just as coarse when you are an Emperor as they are when you are a bandit captain.
    I'm TRYING to get through one campaign with a "beat the game" smiley face using completely vanilla. This compulsion is bolstered by the fact that game updates seem to break a lot of the mods. But once I master this vanilla thing, I'm going to mod the ever loving stuffing out of this game and have ALL of the QoL and basic social/institutional functionality that TaleWorlds apparently just couldn't be bothered to create. I'll write the damn mods myself if I have to! 🤣

    I'm always looking for a good surgeon companion for the first few weeks in game.

      Yeah those guys are the best ones most of the time! Although now that I input all the starting levels, I'll probably go after those level 8s too!

      Everything is hosted on the Discord server under the Useful Guide Info section! You'll see a couple databases for this series of videos and screenshots of the governor builds below that. Discord link is in the description of the video!

    They torpeded this game when they made leveling NPC's stupid slow. a govenor with what you need them to do takes months if not years to get them to any respectable level any longer. I just put any one in that position now and get roughly the same results. They usually die of old age as well before they get anywhere.

    Do you have a build for the brother ? where you add the points?

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому

      That's a good question, I don't think I've really done an analysis on him! I can do that and add it to the beginner's guide I'm doing this month (before full release). Thanks for bringing that up!

    do you do any modding? i think it would be good if this could be made into a QoL mod. like a drop-down menu on each person that would select the traits to choose below for whatever role you have selected for them.
    you select your plan for the person from a drop-down menu or something, and the appropriate skills are somehow highlighted, and that wouldnt interfere with game mechanics, so, less complicated than some mods.

      I don't, I'm not technically savvy in the slightest hehe but I agree, that would be a really helpful mod to have!

    How do I level leadership and roguery on a companion?

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  10 днів тому

      Leadership is done by having non-bandit troops get kills and roguery is done by winning battles, collecting prisoners and selling them off at town. They will automatically sell their prisoners once you go into a town.

    What about tactics? Its work for campanion party liders ?

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому

      Yeah tactics works for party leaders but it's really slow to level up. You'll be lucky to gain 100 levels in 50 years before they die lol

    Does it matter if the commander is mounted? For example: i am a commander of an archer group even though I have a horse, will my perks still affect the archers?

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 роки тому

      No, they will still give their bonuses. One thing to keep in mind, if you have a single cavalry unit mixed in to a formation, the game will usually space the units out as if all units were cav - so your shield wall will have tons of gaps and archer line formation will be very spread out. Just something to keep in mind!
