  • When selecting a color LED strip it can get confusing what to pick! So what is the difference between RGB, RGBW or RGBWW and RGBCW, and what does RGB+CCT mean? Let's take a look at that.

    One other reason for multi-color LEDS with white LEDS is that you need multiple colours to re-produce full spectrum "white light". White LED emitters are at best approximations of "white light" and will leave colour rendition deficient in specific colours, adding additional coloured light helps with this.

      that's where the CRI value (or better yet, R9 or better yet, TM30 values) come into play. there are high color rendering white LED strip options out there. That way you won't have to supplement the light with a specific part of the spectrum.

    This was the most informative explanation there is on UA-cam about these lights.
    I'm currently looking to configure 4M of kitchen "under the top cabinet" lighting.
    Primary I would like to use 4000K LEDs, but while not in use for cooking I would like to dim them and use RGB lighting to enhance the kitchen ambiance.
    I'm worried that rgbcct or rgb-cct won't deliver enough lumen to have a good working environment.
    I've already looked for V-shaped LED profiles that can house 2 parallel strips, but can't find any.
    What would your advice be?

  • @palpytine
    @palpytine Рік тому

    My dream setup would be a modular system comprising:
    - A strip containing interleaved CCT white (with high CRI) and RGB LEDs in high density COB form all running at 5v and individually switchable
    - Dimming via *randomised* PWM (in a stochastic pattern) implemented within the LED ICs to eliminate flickering
    - DC-DC converters that can be clipped *around* the strip (so as not to obscure the LEDs) to perform power injection wherever needed
    - A channel with mount points for the converters - with the aluminium itself used as the ground and an embedded wire for Vcc
    This way the whole system could be run at 24 or even 36v, it would be suitable for both general and accent lighting, the strip itself could be made both thinner and lighter as it wouldn't need to carry any serious current.
    A more budget-friendly version would have a wider strip with the white and RGB LEDs mounted in parallel at a density of maybe 100/metre, then the converter/injector could clip across the strip.

    Thanks for taking the time to explain this to us. I've been looking at RGB effects for about a year now, following the AMD Ryzen buildup to the 7nm release. I don't find an approach to RGB lighting that I care for particularly, so I'm looking into designing something of my own bent. I also have a hard time finding an ATX computer case I like, so that's on the old 5 year plan, ha. Thanks you kindly.

    I find that for "normal" lighting with led strips, it's more convenient for many to have a physical wall control. I personally hate using button dimmers and prefer rotary dimmers. Wonder if there's a decent rotary controller, or anything that could be retrofitted as one, to be found on the market to operate an rgbw strip as a dimmer for the white color, or at least a white led strip, with a decent frequency to avoid the strobe effect. I used a run of the mill pwm with a rotary control for my kitchen counter lights, but it has lousy pwm.
    Using your controller would be perhaps overkill, and unless there's an easy way for a person who's not into programming esp boards to hook up a rotary encoder to it I'd go for a simpler solution.

    1) between a tear in the plaster on the ceiling and on the wall 2) around the tv 3) above the kitchen sink 4) behind the bathroom mirror (IP65)
    Which brand and
    type, power, etc. do you currently advise for these one? I would like your opinion
    5) Do you have a video explaining which font to place correctly for the tapes. Thanks a lot for your help !!!!

      Wow, that's a lot of questions in one, these things are best discussed on my Discord server, but let's give it a try.
      First, for all LED strip recommendations, check out quinled.info and what's in the video description, I update those regularly and list items I've tested myself.
      1. I don't know really what to answer here without seeing a picture what you are talking about. You want white, RGB, both?
      2. Around the TV is cool, I use some static high CRI warm white for that to give the TV a nice glow on the wall but you can also go all out with colors that follow the image on your screen with like Hyperion.
      3. Above the kitchen sink I would advise high CRI Warm White in IP65 for when there are splatters and such. You also need the high CRI since you need accurate red colors in the kitchen which cheap strip makes look horrible!
      4. Again, I'd use the same stuff as in the kitchen. Colors are cool and all but accent and mood lighting at best, you want some good High CRI White and maybe add color as an extra. Again IP65 is a good choice here too, prevents rust on the strip and such in a humid environment.
      5. I'm not sure what you mean with font, you mean a controller or plug?
      Again, for all recommendations, check the links in the description. :)

    Can these LED strips be addressed directly with DC from a battery, or do they always need a LED driver? I connected some RGBW strip straight to a battery using the +24V to the battery positive and the W line to the 0V of the battery and it burned out straightaway. I don’t understand why since it was 24V LED strip and my battery was a 4S LiFePO4 (about 13V), so the voltage was lower than the strip could handle and the polarity was definitely right?

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  2 місяці тому

      I think you mean RGBCCT and RGB+CCT? People will use that interchangeable, if we would nitpick it would be that RGBCCT would have to be in the same package, so like a 5050 style package. And that RGB+CCT indicates it's composed of multiple packages and the white diodes are in a different package then the RGB ones. I don't think normal people would pay enough attention to that tough.

      You are combing a digital LED controller with an analog strip it seems. That won't work unless you add a dig2analog in between. Maybe look for a digital strip? Also CCT is though with digital strips and white quality generally isn't great but as long as it's accent lighting, it's ok.
      RGBCCT strip for WLED doesn't exist BTW. Maybe consider analog? Or just RGBW but it depends what the primary purpose is, is it white lighting? Accent or effects?

      A little bit, maybe? The white in an RGBW (with Cold White) strip isn't great to start with. You can make it warmer by adding mostly Red into the mix but on everything strip I've ever tried such combinations the results where not that great. On the strip where all the chips are in the same package and with a good diffuser over it to make it blend together as much as possible would be the best it could be, but even then it won't come close to matching a good Super Warm White LED.

      I like your vids very educating.
      Do you have any advice for me on a matter (since you dabbled quite a bit in the subject).
      I'm looking to power the whole house with led through POE .
      Addressable LEDs seem the future.
      I've been looking into dmx512 to drive the whole system coupled with home assistant.
      Is this in your opinion feasible or is this still a little to futuristic to be feasible?

      @IntermitTech  4 роки тому

      Poh, there is a lot of issues with that still I think. I know Ubiquity have a POE powered lights but it's quite expensive. And there lies the problem, POE is generally not cheap to implement and then there is the voltage being around 48v and LEDs need around 3v, so addressable LEDs aren't going to work.
      Maybe join the Discord server if you'd like the discuss more! :)

    But what's the point of adding extra LEDs? Red, green, and blue are the primary colors of light. You only need those to create any color. Warm white? Well, yellow light is a combination of red and green, so orange would mean less green than red. So if you have all three colors turned all the way up, and turn down the blue and green, but keeping the blue dimmer than the green, you should technically get something like warm white.

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  4 роки тому

      Purely technically, yes light works that way. In reality with LEDs it makes for a horrible light. White light is a special king of light and needs some more finesse to be pleasent or even functionally white. Check out the articles on my website about this, that explains why. RGB white is horrible and will never be good because it doesn't have the right spectrum of lights to combine. Even just the issue that it's 3 LEDs inside of a single package which throws off 3 shadows and thus everything gets horrible fringing makes it a no go. So in theory yes, in practice, absolutely not usable.

      No, that wouldn't be a true rgb-w... The separate "w" is an actual, SEPARATE white led.

    • @IntermitTech
      @IntermitTech  2 роки тому

      RGBWW is a "wrong term" because it can basically mean multiple things. I prefer either RGB+CCT (if we're talking dual white) or RGBW and the specifying the color temperature. Because then it's always clear, check out my video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/f_B7X9OLouQ/v-deo.html
