Was working on 75 Sqn flight line when Lindsay made this flight. We actually spent Sunday water skiing at Merdeka beach the day before

Great story, thank you Lindsay and Peter. I went through RAAFSTT as a Gunnie in 1985 and the first ejection seat I worked on was the Mirage's OM-6 ejection seat and of course by then it had been modified to have a rocker motor incorporated which made it zero-zero capable. I was subsequently posted to Hornets at 3 Sqn and so didn't ever get to work on a Mirage, but I loved seeing them fly around Williamtown for the next 3 years until their retirement.

Great interview - what a cool character, but I guess that’s what airforce pilots are like!

Thanks to Lindsay for sharing that. Happy April Fool's day.
I think if you got out of a Mirage at that height and got to the ground while the canopy was still opening ~ if you lived another 50 years after that, you're doing alright.
I can remember being told as a kid, the glide ratio of a Mirage III was 9 : 1 ~ that's 9 down to one forward. We have this string of jokes & one-liners about pigs that fly and gliding like a brick, but that beast really did.
The funny thing about them was, the F4 Phantom had a reputation of being a truck. The Mirage had a reputation of being a racing car. As long as you had 300 KIAS or so on the clock, they were a very swift, very agile, very responsive aeroplane. I'm told one was like flying a Spitfire and the other was like flying a C5 Galaxy. There was no massive great difference between the size or the weight or the wing-loading or the control size, but one was like a ballerina, and the other was like a heffa-lump.
I hear the A4 Skyhawk is another one that's very swift and very agile, which is why they still like to use them at Top Gun. It's a very nimble little aeroplane. I hear some of the pilots who have flown the early F/A 18s and moved on to the later ones, rather prefer the old ones, for that exact reason. A Super-Hornet is not Super-nimble ~ at least not compared to it's older brother.

The RAAF nicknamed the super hornets as rhinos.

@@TheSilmarillian~ Yeah. The Yanks refer to them that way too.

The gliding capability of a crow bar was a popular saying for the Mirages gliding capability.

I assume Lindsay bought the Gunnies a slab for keeping his ejection seat serviceable.
