I REALLY hate how fast wizards is producing stuff and I haven’t had a chance to enjoy Kamigawa ☹️ this just makes me sad and like they are rushing their products instead of taking time to develop it. I agree with you in that. When kanigawa released at the beginning of the year I just bought a handful of packs. Only this weekend when new cappenna starting being more dominant in draft did I ask my lgs store owner for a draft booster box of kamigawa. I pulled some pretty good cards for my commander decks and i had enough multiple cards left over to make a decent standard deck. They are flooding the market too quickly!

It isn’t as good as everyone thinks. In terms of raw power, it is a good effect. However, raw power, power in a vacuum is not the deciding factor in how cards perform. Goldspan Dragon is far better than it for that exact reason. Swings 2 turns faster, and I suspect that in most cases, making a bajillion mana vs about 6 mana in the same period of time is just going to be win more. You can totally abuse it if you try, but there are a lot of cards that are “broken if you just have x” and most of the time, a card with such a powerful effect that has no protection other than a very common form of evasion is not very likely to survive one round around the table.
@@DrewskiTheLegend But that's the thing. Another plus for Ancient Copper Dragon.... red also is the color that can give double strike :) Also not mentioned, but I think Battle Angels of Tyr is going to be a really good one. It's low cost and having myriad does give it the possibility to triggering the treasure token, life gain, and card draw every time it attacks. Another card, even though a lot of players shy away from 3 mana mana rocks, I do think the no maximum hand size while also being able to generate colored mana makes Decantur of Endless Water a pretty decent card, obviously worse than Thought Vessel the fewer colors you're playing with, but having redundancy on the no max handsize alone makes it worth considering in many decks.
It seems like overcompensating, but i think it is really important that they keep printing white card draw. it does not only seem like overcompensating but i think it was maro who directly said they are providing now white with better card draw then they usually would to make white more competitive with the other colors. And while we are talking about white card draw: don't forget (or rather overlook) the new card "Your Temple Is Under Attack". a great modal white card draw or protection spell. It looks even solid for decks with other good card draw colors in it.

I really appreciate how the prof will adjust his language to try to make sure he's addressing magic players at all ages, and not a specific genre of player.
This has literally been the time for Dragon Tribal in Commander. The Dragons in this set and the dragons in Kamigawa really open up a lot of plays with plenty of Dragon Commanders to choose from to use all five colors. Definitely a year for singles in Dragon Tribal.
@@jamdaham9054 Back when the 2017 commander decks came out, I drove around to four different stores to find one of the Ur-Dragon decks. SOOOOOOO worth looking for at the time!!!
At the prerelease I drafted an ancient gold dragon and a legion loyalty. Through making treasure token I got my dragon out on turn 5 and played legion loyalty on the following turn where I was able to swing and connect with each opponent. I rolled 2 15’s and a 17… we didn’t play commander, it was a game of archenemy.
I've really enjoyed the draft / prerelease format of this set, defo agree that you shouldn't buy the set boosters though! most of the good edh reprints in this set are actually at Common / Uncommon, and most of the rares and mythics aren't pricey at all as singles.
Most of the reprint value is in the precons lol... Party time in particular. Luckily for me I got a few opponent lands and an archivist of oghma in my draft as well as a borderless bramble sovreign.
Yeah I'm going to have a lot of fun with this draft season. It would be a real shame if it was overshadowed by the next set within a month. Good thing that won't happen haha...
Ancient Copper Dragon also looks like he would pair well with Henzie “Toolbox” Torre. Blitz the dragon out for five or even less and get that treasure. Hell, why not get the black and green dragons too?
White card advantage is a good surprise with this set, but it feels almost a bit too much, for white at least. Especially the gnome guy that is just a repeatable fetchland with flash
They will become new staples and cost a fortune for the next couple of years XD. But since i barely play with white and only splashes of it, I can and WILL ignore it thankfully.
The new smothering carpet (i think that's it's name) is a sweet little soft stax piece that helps chunk off the life total of whoever is storming off on their turn. Even more exciting is the mirror of life trapping for a psuedo-portcullis effect that synergises with etb effects.
Every new set has must have cards for Prosper, it's incredible! It's becoming challenging to keep up and upgrade my deck every time a new set comes around, and frankly a bit tiring
The mythic dragons are great, but this set has some great dragons at lower rarities and, more importantly, lower mana values. One of the challenges of dragon decks like Ur-Dragon is that nearly every playable dragon has a high mana value, so the deck struggles in the early turns and just tries to ramp before it's overwhelmed by faster decks. Cheap dragons that block early and help late? Yes please. Scaled Nurturer is a Llanowar Elves. Swashbucker Extraordinaire is a poor-man's Atarka. Crystal Dragon is a regrowth for your best cards on a dragon body. Renari, Merchant of Revels gives your dragons flash. This set has toys for every dragon deck imaginable, and for some new ones too. Miirym might replace Ur-Dragon as my commander of choice for the deck.
What was that voice crack at 7:14? Either way, love the vid! I forgot about Cut a Deal, and I’m glad you mentioned it, because I want to put all kinds of cards like that in my new Gluntch deck!
the Ancient Dragons also work well with Double Strike. They're on combat damage, not attack, after all. Double Strike is Double Damage is 2d20 Treasures. (And, y'know, 12 damage to a player)
To the suggestions you made towards the end of #1 being Ancient Copper Dragon and splash in some Boros shenanigans, I think Ancient Gold Dragon + Dragon Tempest would each get a slot in my 99. Great video as always, Prof!
“Great reprints” that’s news to me considering I can’t think of many reprints I’d have wanted to see outside of the Bond lands WHICH SHOULD BE REPRINTED IN EVERY PRECON. I know why there’s minimal reprints tho; gotta save that for Double masters, ami fucking right! (Pain)
Best financial advice I've heard in quite a while. Personally disappointed CLB does line up with CLR. Really needs a dramatic price adjustment from Hasbro. Thankfully there a nice precons.
I am higher than Argyle right now to introduce Ancient Copper Dragon to my Rionya deck. Im gonna make so much damned treasure that there'll be a Dies to Removal episode about it damn it!
me only playing standard *understandable, have a great day* i miss standard content, especially since standard is kinda on a fine spot rn with midrange decks coming back to the front seat :(
I think treasures have done a lot of damage to magics mana base and ecosystem. Part of the flavour and charm of magic is the lands and mana system is about expression, treasures dilutes that and makes the game feel more ubiquitous and fast. Sadly I think it’s already too late to undo some of the damage treasure tokens have done, but it’s not too late to print some treasure hate cards to fight them and deter players from running it in too many situations. Cards like ‘treasures enter tapped’ or ‘whenever an opponent sacrifices a treasure, they take 1 life’.
Thank you for this video prof ! I was getting a bit tired of eternal spoiler season, so I skipped this set entirely. Your video helped me get an idea of what cards I might still want to get !
Some lgs kept the rebate of 2 set boosters included with a prerelease kit. It was rebalancing the price as set booster were worth more this time. The problem with that list is that I wanted a lot more card than only the top 8 . Add reflecting pool and command tower, artefact like the diamond, swiftfoot boots, blade os selves and basilisk collar, most of legendary creature that can become a commander, the gates to upgrade my gate deck and many more. There is some sleepers like campfire or rug of smothering that will fit well in some decks. So in the end I am closer to the price of some boxes with some singles
See while Ancient Copper Dragon is the most universally good of the five, Ancient Silver Dragon fits in perfectly with Scion of the Ur-Dragon. If an opponent is foolish enough to let him through, you are two mana and a die roll away from a massive advantage for the entire game.
I’ve already designed a Boros deck with the new legendary Duke guy, and the focus is ETB and Combat Damage value by giving Myriad to dragons. It’s pretty freaking good. Lol ok I started typing this before you even mentioned Myriad, yeah it’s pretty clear how good this combo potential is.
I made a deck using Neera and the Displacer Kitten. Only "creatures" in it aside from them are instants/sorceries that make tokens so I can eventually go infinite with Grapeshot, Ral, Storm Conduit, or Aria of Flame.
I really like Archavist, just at first glance - Tempt With Discovery is one option, but that think of all the other things this boosts: Path to Exile? They get to choose, which means either I get free card draw, or a 1cmc exile spell with no downside. Field of Ruin is a guaranteed draw-three. Scheming Symmetry lets you draw _and_ tutor something to the top (preferably followed by something to mill your opponent). This card is a sneaky little powerhouse in the right deck.
Only reason I am buying a box is to have a draft with my little cousins. Im buying this as an experience for us and that is going t be it from this set for me
Use Wild Magic Surge agents themed decks is not so good. Like The Ur-Dragon. use it on a dragon and I can get, Tiamat, Utvara hellkitre, Broodmate dragon or Balefire dragon to name a few.
I think 3 Mana rocks with any kind of useful utility are absolutely playable. E.g the 3-mana red dragon mana orb, that produces R but also gives haste to a Dragon you cast with it, basically acelerates your Dragon's attack by two turns. (one turn, because ramp lets you cast things a turn sooner and one turn, because it grants haste.) turn 1: mana dork turn 2: dragon orb turn 3: play a beefy 5-6 mana Dragon with haste (6 if Ur-Dragon with his eminence ability is your commander) It's not exactly cEDH, but if your casual group likes to play "fair" magic, this is a satisfying sequence of play. A turn two signet is still just as good, especially if it comes into play untapped and lets you cast another 2-mana spell (if you played a manadork turn 1) but I'm not arguing that 3 mana rocks are better, just that they are very playable still, if they have actual utility, unlike a lot of vanilla 3-mana rocks. Say, Darksteel Imgot, where very few decks (artifact animation) can make use of the indestructibility.
With all the new white card draw, (and let's be honest, it already had more ramp than any grixis colour,) I feel like we can stop saying white needs fixing. People are forgetting that mono decks are already weak, and by now I feel mono-white isn't really that much weaker at all than any of the other mono coloured decks (Besides maybe mono green).
"more ramp than any grixis colour" That's both true and wrong. Red Black is able of way more explosive ramp than white will ever be. But it's true that white "ramps" better land-wise, between landtax, WW, the two new buddies, smothering tithe and racoon study. However, I wouldn't say white no longer needs fixing (it's in a decent position but very stuck in a specific gameplay - stax); and I disagree that mono-white is at level with other mono coloured; but I'd say it's more due to the lack of a really really strong commander like other colours can have. Yawmgoth/Krrik, Urza, Magda, Selvala and Yissan are so bonkers that it's quite hard to find a decent comparison in white. Heliod is decent but only pushes the stax problem further, Adeline is interesting but lacks consistency (and kinda feels like a bad Najeela), LightPaw is cute but definitely not good enough to be reliable in cEdh, ... just my two cents.
Ancient Silver Dragon is definitely a must in any deck that can run blue and more so if your commander can make creatures unlockable such as Kaseto Orochi Archmage
Wild Mage Surge isn't bad in a red deck, either to kill a goblin no longer serving its purpose or if someone is going to kill your guy, blocking or otherwise, instant into play and get one of your own creatures
No new sets were released... but there were 14 new Secret Lairs announced, including the brand new "Secret LairXRiverdale" and "Secret LairXPaw Patrol"
Sooo basically I don't have to buy anything else...well I need mox Amber and teferi😂,other than that though.Thanx Sir.Love your videos,I'd be lost without you.
Draft is so fun, and so is opening packs. I got a set booster box but mainly to build my collection. Totally buy singles if you got a specific strategy in mind. Also there's been so much treasure and artifact bs going around, I'm gonna just start running artifact hate in my control decks.
I've honestly been lukewarm about this set. It feels like it's got 2 focuses, one for Draft, and another for Commander specific, which mean's it's chasing two targets at once. I don't want to draft for fear of getting expensive, but dead cards, that only have value in my pod. And I don't wanna crack set packs for fear of cards that only have value in draft. Plus, this is expensive per pack! I'll be waiting to make purchases until I see what the market does, except for the Pre-Cons. Everything buy the Kamigawa pre-cons have been LGS day 1 purchases for me because of the sheer number I've cannibalized for cards for my other decks. It's cheaper for me to buy them than to buy singles, oddly enough.
Ancient Copper Dragon feels like one of the most pushed cards in the recent year(s). It's a buy it now or never card, because that price is not going to drop... ever. Or you can just proxy it, HEY!
I predict in 6 months it will be $20 max. Once people realize that it will just be killed immediately because it’s a big threat with no protection that costs 6 and doesn’t do anything the turn you cast it in most cases.

This has literally been the time for Dragon Tribal in Commander. The Dragons in this set and the dragons in Kamigawa really open up a lot of plays with plenty of Dragon Commanders to choose from to use all five colors. Definitely a year for singles in Dragon Tribal.
I'm just glad I bought the Ur-Dragon back when it was still about $20.
@@jamdaham9054 Back when the 2017 commander decks came out, I drove around to four different stores to find one of the Ur-Dragon decks. SOOOOOOO worth looking for at the time!!!
got to love that the Displacer Kitten is more dangerous than the Displacer beast from the previous D&D set
@@dontstealmydiamondsv3156 no shit man. It's just too much. Especially releasing a supposedly premium set into an even more premium set lool
We got spoilers for the next set the same damn day pre-release started lol
I had a great time at my LGS during pre-release.
It's now time to buy the singles I want when the price is right.
Ashamed I went straight for a set booster box but I did get most of the cards on the list especially a showcase copper dragon 😍 so not too bad.
Ancient Copper Dragon also looks like he would pair well with Henzie “Toolbox” Torre. Blitz the dragon out for five or even less and get that treasure. Hell, why not get the black and green dragons too?
i thought the exact same thing
Ancient copper dragon and stimulus package just don't get cheeks roles
And then a bunch of alliance effects or creature itb stuff
Ancient Copper Dragon will be all sorts of fun with Goldspan Dragon. 🤩
It's preview season!
Again?
Still?
Yes.
The new smothering carpet (i think that's it's name) is a sweet little soft stax piece that helps chunk off the life total of whoever is storming off on their turn. Even more exciting is the mirror of life trapping for a psuedo-portcullis effect that synergises with etb effects.
Electric Boogaloo reference is absolute Fire!
Every new set has must have cards for Prosper, it's incredible! It's becoming challenging to keep up and upgrade my deck every time a new set comes around, and frankly a bit tiring
4:22 to start the video
I got the blue dragon in my pre-release set but another player cracked a pack that had the copper dragon and I bought it so fast hahaha
I'm glad my ancient tutor cards, Sensei's divining top and a few others are still able to be played. I need to get into commander, asap
What was that voice crack at 7:14?
Either way, love the vid! I forgot about Cut a Deal, and I’m glad you mentioned it, because I want to put all kinds of cards like that in my new Gluntch deck!
I think they dis a darn good job with the Ancient Dragons cycle. Super strong, but appropriately expensive.
Agreed! and you can still whiff if you roll a critical FAILURE :P
That joke in the beginning gave me a chuckle
the Ancient Dragons also work well with Double Strike. They're on combat damage, not attack, after all. Double Strike is Double Damage is 2d20 Treasures. (And, y'know, 12 damage to a player)
And that is why it'll be going straight into my Atarka (World Render) deck ;)
Your video transitions are hilarious and great.
(Pain)
Good thing they have bounce lands in double masters ....
Kindred Discovery and Deadly Dispute come to mind.
Best financial advice I've heard in quite a while. Personally disappointed CLB does line up with CLR. Really needs a dramatic price adjustment from Hasbro. Thankfully there a nice precons.
theres actually a lot of great new cards for the sapphic format in this set, really shifting the power away from red finally
Okay, I seem to be too dim-witted to be able to google it. What is the sapphic format / where can I read about it?
@@Hidewrath ask your roommate!
@@Hidewrath it's lesbianism (not really a format, just some cards have women being gay on them or canonically lesbian/bi characters)
How sapphic does a deck have to be to be sapphic format? If I make Saheeli the Gifted my commander, is that enough?
Honorable mention to the Deep Gnome Terramancer. Two mana ramp in white that can trigger multiple times. Pretty good in commander.
I am higher than Argyle right now to introduce Ancient Copper Dragon to my Rionya deck. Im gonna make so much damned treasure that there'll be a Dies to Removal episode about it damn it!
me only playing standard
*understandable, have a great day*
i miss standard content, especially since standard is kinda on a fine spot rn with midrange decks coming back to the front seat :(
IMO this 2nd go at a D&D set has me much more excited 😊
I got the Ancient Copper Dragon as the foil promo of my Baldur's gate pre pack... With a package press misprint.
I was moved to tears.
This makes me feel even better about the Archivist of Oghma that I pulled in a prerelease draft. I bet it’ll be really expensive.
Against Wild Magic Surge, you can cast Vampiric/Worldly/Enlightened Tutor to fix what you'll get off the top
Split the spoils is busted. The fact that you can choose the cards AND the piles is hilarious
So in the end I am closer to the price of some boxes with some singles
ancient copper dragon is a chase mythic in a premium-priced set, even buying the single is going to be expensive, gonna proxy that one out thank you
See while Ancient Copper Dragon is the most universally good of the five, Ancient Silver Dragon fits in perfectly with Scion of the Ur-Dragon. If an opponent is foolish enough to let him through, you are two mana and a die roll away from a massive advantage for the entire game.
I really enjoyed the commander draft pre-release. In my opinion this is a fun draft set. (Plus I love the D&D flavour of the set)
The flavor is A+
I attended to two pre-release events in my local game store and was super fun! I really recommended
I have never been more dissatisfied with a Magic purchase than I was with my prerelease kit.
The set is the perfect draft format. I had so much fun in this 4 player game
I tried a scryfall art:rat search, but can't find the background at 9:00 can anyone help? seems like a great playmat.
Got pretty much 80 commander decks. Physical.
Buying a single box wouldn't be a waste of cash as I often tend to use them up.
(one turn, because ramp lets you cast things a turn sooner and one turn, because it grants haste.)
turn 1: mana dork
turn 2: dragon orb
turn 3: play a beefy 5-6 mana Dragon with haste (6 if Ur-Dragon with his eminence ability is your commander)
It's not exactly cEDH, but if your casual group likes to play "fair" magic, this is a satisfying sequence of play.
"more ramp than any grixis colour"
That's both true and wrong.
What do you mean @5:58? The artwork for secret rendezvous is sapphic but not sure what you meant by not being familiar with that format?
You're awesome Tolarian Academy, keep up the good work 🖖
been waiting for this. Thanks Prof!
Green is still currently the one that can generate the most treasures...but copper does help red a lot.
1:00-1:50 full Eric Andre. Best video on yt. More vids like this pls. #420
video editor was having so much fun this time
Ancient Silver Dragon is definitely a must in any deck that can run blue and more so if your commander can make creatures unlockable such as Kaseto Orochi Archmage
Oghma has the added benefit of having some dope ass flavor text when flavor text has been going downhill
Definitely getting the copper dragon, not sure about the other ones yet. The white cards look good to me as well.
Damn I was really hoping you wouldn’t mention any of the dragons… I need all of them and they’re expensive as it is! 😂
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe mirror of life trapping could be used to double ETB's similar to Panharmonicon or Yarok
Wild Mage Surge isn't bad in a red deck, either to kill a goblin no longer serving its purpose or if someone is going to kill your guy, blocking or otherwise, instant into play and get one of your own creatures
i quite enjoyed the variety of common and uncommon mana rocks that did unique things
Oh I love the sapphic format. It's basically all I play these days.
Is the music at 10:55 from Wizard 101? If not it sounds almost identical
Jaheira is a BEAST. I would get her while you can for cheap because she is bomb.
Thank you Professor for your top 8 cards in Baldur's Gate.
Any recommendations for how to split a draft box for three players? We decided to skip pre release but don’t have a 4th
Maybe its just me...but a "destroy target permanent" is a hell of a lot different than Chaos Warp which just shuffles that permanent into the library.
No new sets were released... but there were 14 new Secret Lairs announced, including the brand new "Secret LairXRiverdale" and "Secret LairXPaw Patrol"
Always love when these come out!
"Remember Brawl" Sits up in chair "in paper? Ah ha ha." Leans back in chair "Oh."
It took me a lot of time (and money 😭) but I finally learned my lesson... I'm buying singles from now on!
Precons are great value.
Espacially if you are avid deck builder, and need resources to spread around.
imagine if the professor was wrong at 15:00 hahah
Ancient Copper Dragon feels like one of the most pushed cards in the recent year(s). It's a buy it now or never card, because that price is not going to drop... ever.
Or you can just proxy it, HEY!
I predict in 6 months it will be $20 max. Once people realize that it will just be killed immediately because it’s a big threat with no protection that costs 6 and doesn’t do anything the turn you cast it in most cases.
