The Auckland Blues won the first 2 super rugby finals 1996-97 and narrowly lost the final against the Crusaders in 98. They won again in 2003 and apart from losing the final last year to the Crusaders there finals appearances have amounted to only 2 since 1998.. 2023 might be there year but there is something about Blues rugby that is so inconsistent despite having some of the best players in NZ since the tournament began.
ahhh, the good old days, what a name team we had then, many of them still considered the best ever, would thrash every other kiwi team even the crusaders, wont you tell me where have all the good times gone
The Golden years! Back when rugby was exciting and easy to understand, before the endless rule changes. For the first few seasons Super Rugby teams were a bit like "All-Star" teams. The season was short which gave players a chance to go back to play for their provinces (NPC), having international experience so the NPC got awesome too. Provincial rugby teams became a bit like Origin teams.......and then greed took over and NZ rugby started dying a slow death
Junior tonu'u passes just classic Mann..never seen a halfback pass so hard and accurate.. Spenser didn't care about their width and depth cause he knew tonu'u's pass would reach him regardless..
Rugby was just so special during this Era.

I was at that game with my Dad and my brother way back in 1996. It was an amazing atmosphere.
Loved the natal team if this era.
So talented and great to watch.
Rugby will never be this good again
I was at this game! Thanks Susan Dawson for the tickets!

The broadcast used to be more focused on the player with the ball rather than all the wide shots you get now.
I see Natal still played with the two black wildebeest as emblem. As a Blue Bull I like this old Natal emblem.
Remember this game as if it were yesterday

I have Gary teichmans jersey from the super 12 framed and on the wall, back then they didn't have a new jersey every game

Henry honiball , the best defending fly off ever
Henry wreckingball
And what did that help in the game?

Rugby at its best! I remember thinking at the time European rugby had no answer in those games.
