The fact that these videos were actually shot on film & could later be remastered in genuine 4K is just amazing to me. I didn't think they had the foresight to do that with these.
I think every band knew that their videos were capable of such quality, except the technology of the time limited the population to 480p telecine transfers. The only way the quality could get better would be to watch the original negative on a real film projector
A lot of it wasn't foresight, especially older stuff. You had to shoot on film before the 00s if you wanted the video to be anything more than a recording of the performance. They easily could've shot this one on digital and it still would look great today so I think the film was just a stylistic decision by whoever was in charge of it.
@@Haydawg06 I mean, a lot if not all of Green Day's music videos were shot on film. They were just mastered on tape. Look around at their contemporaries. Not all of them had the foresight to shoot their music videos on film. Instead, they chose video tape. A decent amount of old, popular music videos weren't shot on film & that's depressing. So, we just get crappy upscales to 1080p or 4K that don't do much to actually improve the video quality like an actual film remaster would.
Serdar BİÇER it’s in the third act of the song. Jimmy/Billie is saying how everyone’s homes are different and the typical mold of an American household is flawed. Not everyone wants or can live that type of life. Everyone loves something different. Coupled with the next verse, he’s saying how his home is different than the typical. A broken home and he wishes it could be better. A type of thankful resentment. Resentment because of what it turned him into and how nobody cares but thankful because its who he is.
@@jeremytoms9698 I'm 30, I hope the younger generations understand that having a family is important because otherwise you'll be a lonely loser like me. Can't get dates/girls, can't advance in any social aspect. I hope the younger gens don't make my mistakes....
I remember listening to this when i was 14/15 years old...feeling so hopeless, broken, lost...literally couldnt listen to this song without bawling my eyes out cause it was so relevant....now at 26, nearly 27...i listen to this song, and see how far i have came mentally and can truly be so proud of myself. I promise to those of you, feeling the way i once did...it can get better, when you find that little bit of hope grab it, and hold on so fucking hard you cant let go. I promise.
I know exactly what you mean! Went through a hard period during the release of this album (Was in the same age) and so many years have passed and so many memories come back to me now. And yeah, it is absolutely worth to keep fighting, bringing this little light of hope deep inside you and keep going to make it shine more and more brighter. I just can repeat the words you have already written down: Find that little piece of hope and keep going!
dude same with me i used to be totally depressed and never told anyone and listened to this song all the time and now looking back i realize how much I've grown
@redskies4530 Great suggestion!! Thank you for telling us the best news for your current day and the Maytals is a little lonely and I hope you're feeling well today and I'm sure you are very happy 😊
This song reminds me of bohemian rhapsody, in that not only is it seemingly the pinnacle of the band's creative abilities, but also this mishmash of contrasting sections that create this beautifully lengthy piece you wouldn't dare cut any time from. Effectively, it's a masterpiece.
For me personal this is the best song ever. The structure, the lyrics, the music. I can listen to it over and over again and it still gives me goosebumps. Makes me feel something I never felt in other songs.
Man, that's really cool. I get caught up in certain songs when I'm feeling a particular way. Sometimes I feel like this song is ripping my guts out for all to see, and other times, it's Chevelle or Dark New Day doing the same thing. I seem to recognize what goes into a song, and reap all the benefits of what comes out of it, I really like it. I kind of do the same thing with people... If I can break you down and make you reflect... I did my job.
Anyone else feeling like they lived this music video in their younger years? I'm an adult now, with a stable home life that I built myself. I'm still every bit the gothic hippie punk I was at 17, but I'm medicated and I'm happy. It's kind of like nostalgia when I watch this, but a more real nostalgia, where you remember the good, the bad and the horrific all with the same bittersweet smile.
oh i def feel you on this. I was rebellious as shit and remember a lot of things like this like the party houses with the parents, drinking in parking lots, etc. looking back its sad but there were good times. Def gave me some "life experience" and way to find myself. I eventually figured it out but boy it took a while haha
Yes for sure I remember actually hanging out under the bridge and the older guys gave us cigs and would get us to steal vegetables to throw at random people then we would run off and hide. I met my first love in that scene of course I had to learn to fight other guys when she messed around, sadly she passed early from drugs rip baby. Remember we would write and draw offensive stuff on everything we could. Sort of confused but we were just trying to escape this conformity that finally caught our asses.
This is not a song, this is not a story. This is not fiction. This is the most honest way of showing how broken we all are. Can't thank you enough, Billie Joe Armstrong.
COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER MYSELF...GREEN DAY GOT ME THROUGH MY FUCKED UP YOUTH...1ST concert was the Dookie tour when I was 14...They were the UP to My DOWN hill...They will Never even understand what they did for me🧷🖤🧷💚🧷
The only band that can convince me that it's okay to listen to them till three in the morning even though I have to get up at 6 for work . Now that's a achievement on its own .
Thinking about it, it would make sense if this was about him losing his dad. Especially at parts like 5:49 when the kid (who probably represents billie) is looking in the mirror he could be seeing his dad
Released as the fifth and final single from the group's seventh studio album, "American Idiot," and the second song on the album. With the song running for 9 minutes and 8 seconds, it is Green Day's second longest song (with the band's longest song being fellow American Idiot song "Homecoming", which runs for 9 minutes and 18 seconds) and the group's longest song to be released as a single. The studio version of this song was considered to be unfriendly for radio, so it was cut down to 6½ minutes for the radio edit. The long version was still played on many album rock and alternative rock radio stations. At most live shows on the first leg of the group's 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, the band would pick a member from the audience to play guitar for the song. The single has sold 205,000 copies as of July 2010. American Idiot is a concept album that describes the story of a central character named Jesus of Suburbia, an anti-hero created by Billie Joe Armstrong. It is written from the perspective of a lower-middle-class suburban American teen, raised on a diet of "soda pop and Ritalin." Jesus hates his town and those close to him, so he leaves for The City. "Jesus of Suburbia" was the second multi-part song the group formed. Armstrong said it took "a long time" to write the song. Dirnt said that it came about from natural rehearsing between the trio. This song was an extension of Armstrong's desire to write the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of the future. As the song changes into different sections, Armstrong’s guitars were recorded differently. The musicians would "split the signal from the guitar and send it into an amp while simultaneously going direct with it," to achieve a sound reminiscent of "Revolution" by the Beatles or the style of David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. In addition, an overdrive pedal was employed to accentuate gain from the instrument, producing a "punchy" sound to each chord. For the first two sections of the song, Cool emulated Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, two English drummers from the 1960s. For the final three, he drums in his style: "I'm tipping my hat to all these great drummers that I love, and then I kick the door down and do it … my style."[8] In addition to Watts, Cool pulled inspiration from Keith Moon and Alex Van Halen.[8] The song was composed by Green Day (with Billie Joe Armstrong writing the lyrics), and was co-produced by Rob Cavallo. "Jesus of Suburbia" has five movements: I. "Jesus of Suburbia" (0:00 - 1:51) II. "City of the Damned" (1:51 - 3:42) III. "I Don't Care" (3:42 - 5:25) IV. "Dearly Beloved" (5:25 - 6:30) V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" (6:30 - 9:08) Since its release, "Jesus of Suburbia" has received universal critical acclaim. People magazine called the song "epic" and a "magnificent nine-minute rock opera." It is often recognized as one of Green Day's greatest songs. It was voted the greatest Green Day song of all time in a Rolling Stone readers poll in September 2012. Magnet considered the song underrated, saying "Some will look at this choice and sniff, “How the hell can you call that underrated?” ... But how in the world can you call it “overrated” when the five-movement, nine-plus-minute song bobs and weaves its way through standard-issue pop punk(“Jesus Of Suburbia”), a piano-laced interlude (“City Of The Damned”), the slobbering, thundering middle section (“I Don’t Care”), acoustic mid-tempo connective tissue (“Dearly Beloved”) and an outsized, anthemic curtain call (the spectacularly good “Tales Of Another Broken Home”), all in service of a tale of bored rebellion as nuanced as Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia and as powerful as any of Paul Westerberg’s snot-nosed teenage character studies?". Billie Joe stated in an interview: "[The song] broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out." He also added: " ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now." Armstrong told MTV: "Right after I came up with [the phrase] ‘American Idiot,’ I came up with [the album’s protagonist], ‘Jesus of Suburbia, I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I’ve never really read it?’ So, there’s no burning bush, but there’s burning towns and ethics."
Such an accurate comment. I dislike pop-punk in general and I think Green Day is a generic band and their albums kind of suck, but man I can't deny that each second of this song (and its video) is an absolute masterpiece
I don't know if anyone will read this, but I just noticed that around 3:01 the woman that Jimmy is taking away is his mother, and it makes me feel really bad for him.
LOL I noticed right away. I grew up around this partying w/friends parents all the time at their houses. Its strange when the thing you're rebelling against is the same as you! It's not sad, just human. We're all rebelling against something and need to blow off stem. Abuse is another animal, but what's in this vid looks like a good home. Mom working as a nurse/assistant, clean house FOOD! It wouldn't call it sad like most people. There's worse.
Anyone in their late 30’s? How’s life?... We worked hard to fix ourselves… Me? 38, married, 3 kids, in debt, lost a few friends... but happy to still be here.
Even crazier, late 40s. Wanting to know how I am here. Was just yesterday I saw GD at local hole in wall clubs. Part of me inside still feels the same even if I don't look it
Damn the lyrics in song are so good! I mean really "It says home is where your heart is, But what a shame, Cause everyone's heart, Doesn't beat the same." Such a good song
This album meant so much to those of us trying to grow up in the Bush era, particularly in the years just after 9/11. It really gave voice to all that fear and rage and confusion we had.
@@rayanhorami9196 Honestly 9/11 is a joke compared to the War crimes t West committed on Brown people all over the world, from the middle east to Countries below Texas.
I came back here, after maybe 8 years. I was obsessed with this song and with Green Day in general back then. It's like looking back at myself somehow. I remember I would struggle so hard to understand the conversations Jimmy has in the video, feels cool to understand the whole story now
Same! I was literally 12 when the song came out and I understood the lyrics, but the conversations were impossible for me. And tbh now I'm so proud of myself even if it's been like 10 years lmao
Omg yes. It feels so good to look back on things that i LOVED 10 or so years ago, but now I’m actually able to completely understand the meaning and purposes of the music and movies that shaped me. Especially bob Dylan and the Beatles. Even though I couldn’t completely understand what I was listening to as a young teen, my heart and soul knew that it was something special. It’s nice being older with a little bit more understanding to these things I love. And I’m sure as the years keep coming on, I’ll still be learning more and more new things from the things I knew I loved as a teen 🤍
This video and song made a huge part of my life 15 years ago when I was just a teenager. Now I'm 30 and looking back those times, damn, my little self would be so proud of who I am now 🥺❤️
My son Gabriel loved you guys so much that he started playing a bass and would play your songs every day jamming out and singing your stuff every day ! So much that I became a Greenday fan myself well my son at 16 decided life was to much and took his own life no doubt listening to one last Greenday song before he left this earth .All I would like to say you guys are awesome it's the connection my son and I had every day when he played and sang to me thank you ! ❤ 🎶💯🎸
This song is an instant time machine. It takes me back to my teenage years. Low and behold, it wasn't a phase, and im still an emo/punk/alternative kid at 32 years old Not much has changed, other than a fuck load of responsibilities and mental illness 🤟🖤
Same!!! Everyone said it was just a phase and I'll grow out of it but I'm still alternative. More into metal and goth music these days tho, but Green Day will always have a special place in my heart. 🖤
I couldn't have said it better myself! 😊 I know this sounds super SUPER cliche, but when I was a teenager, this song was the soundtrack to my life...I couldn't get enough of it, I was obsessed..I honestly don't think I'd be who I am today if it weren't for Jesus of Suburbia. This song was and will always be a part of me...Green day goes hard 😎💚💚💚💚💚💚
i'm a teenager currently, and struggling with a shitty home life and a lot of mental health issues. this song is one of the things keeping me above water - i can't count the times i've looped it in my headphones at full volume to drown out yelling. i'm eternally grateful for green day and this song rock on everyone \m/ edit: thanks for all your lovely replies guys, it truly means the world. im in a lot better of a place then i was when i wrote this comment originally, and partly it was ur replies that carried me through
Please, remember that the situation you’re in right now is not permanent. You will leave that home life at some point, and though that is extremely scary. It’ll allow you the space and comfort to heal from all the crap you’ve gone through. Take it from me, someone whose family is the source of all their mental health problems: when you get out you’ll truly start your life. What I mean by that is you will basically be completely reborn when you don’t gave that negativity constantly weighing you down. You may not be alonein this but that doesn’t mean your situation is completely relatable to 99% of humans on Earth. I say that, because I feel it’s very important to remind you that you is all you truly have. You can only count on YOURSELF to change YOUR life in order to better YOURSELF. I emphasize that cause no one properly nailed it into my head. Don’t give up, don’t think that this is all there is, don’t let these scars ruin your life like I allowed my scars to. Trust me when I say this, the fact you’re still breathing is a testament to how badass you are. Remember that. Remember you are strong. Please, remember these things. Much love, i hope you are able to find peace and happiness soon. Stay strong and keep pushing, friend.
Maybe it's hard for them too an it's just the way they can cope just try to help out an help them not easy with lots of kids a house an bills in this climate just keep at it
At 4:39 the whole time he’s in there just the way he writes and the position his body is in when he lays down (4:47) and the way he sits(4:57)... it really just shows how he feels and idk... I feel like it’s just a relatable feeling especially to those who have been through some tough times
i remember listening to this masterpiece every single day 10 times a day for 2 years. i can still feel the smell of gel in my hairs, and the power of punk in my vains. American Idiot album is my life, it made me who i am today and even if im 25 now, i will never forget how much i loved this
Geez , this took me back to 2006. In Mexico they used to stream it a lot though “ Los 10+ pedidos” from MTV LATAM . I remember after ending this song Depeche Mode with Personal Jesus played. such good times!!!
@@crossheartmlpi think how a Teenager think, because Teenager is so unpredictable, but i don't know im still teenager too im 16. soo that what i think for now
Jimmy's feeling like a pessimistic nihilist after his girl breaks it off with him, it's a normal thing for some unrepressed teenagers to go through, and maybe even some adults 💯
2000's were the wild west and I fucking miss it. Everyone is glued to their phones now, its depressing. If the world went to shit right now and everyone lost their phones... probably wouldnt be such a bad thing for the world.
Great. I've now lived long enough to hear people talk about the early 2000s like my parents used to talk about the 60s and people my age talk about the 80s. Nothing changes.
the song have 5 parts 1. jesus of suburbia this parts describes jimmy or jesus and his life in jingletown where he lived in a diet of soda and ritalin 2. city of the damned this parts happens in march, where jimmy or jesus asks himself if that is his place cus he feels dissapointed of his life there in that crappy town 3.i dont care this part describes the feelings of jimmy to his ''friends''. feeling rejected by them 4.dearly beloved this part talks about jimmy going to the shrink to find a way to fill his ''spiritual void'' 5.tales from another broken home this part talks about the decision of jimmy of leaving his house, his past, his old life, and chooses to go and live in the city special thanks to wikipedia
But if you listen to the whole album, it seems that Jimmy and JOS are two separate people, because in Give Me Novacane, he says "Jimmy says it's better than air", and in Homecoming, he says "Jimmy died today, blew his brains out into the rain", and in Saint Jimmy, he describes conversations he had with Jimmy, so unless he has multiple personality disprder, it couldn't be the story of Jimmy.
I hold some deep personal connections to this album. In some ways, it symbolizes to me the start of my adolescent years. I remember listening to it a lot for a two year period during which I had a really bad relationship with my parents. I didn't have any real friends at the time, either. My limited selection of music was all I had for that time to try and figure things out. I can't listen to any of it today without being reminded of how alone and confused I felt back then. On the rare occasions in which I reopen this chapter of my life, I try to remind myself of how far I've come as a person and that I don't need to worry about the things that I felt crushing me back then.
Interesting Fact: Billie Joe Armstrong stated in an interview: "This song broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out." He also added: " ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now." The 2024 remaster makes it look like I had access to a time machine 😳😭 It's so clear I can almost smell this music video! 😅 incredible. Feeling so nostalgic.
American Idiot was a huge life changing album for me, I was a kid when it came out and I enjoyed every song on the album and would listen to it all the time. Not too long after the album released, I lost my father to a heart attack in his sleep, I was only 13 years old at the time and I must say that this album has helped me through some of my darkest times of my life, thank you Green Day you all always have a huge influence and meaning to me and my life.
Were you also kept insane by that goddamn mary jane......lol :p. Always thought that part of the song was stupid, still I don't think the song as a whole is stupid. I hope you're doing fine
15 years ago, I was performing a concert with this song for my 4-year-old brother and I was hoping my father wouldn't catch me. What a great band you are, Green Day. I've had this song in my mind for 15 years.
I'm old enough that my greenday albums through adolescence were Dookie/Insomniac/Nimrod but this speaks to me like nothing else does even though I live in the UK I lived this experience.
@@DiegoHerrera579 2004 is a lot less old school than 1994. And that's just the year Dookie dropped. They were already making music as a legit band for basically a decade at the point.
@Dark Light wtf does your comment have anything to do with mine....? Has anyone else ever been embarrassed for someone else...? Like what they said was so stupid you feel sorry for them...? Not one person said they started or inherited punk... I guess it's true that when you're drunk you are in your own world... Bc man your comment was absolutely out of place and dumb... I don't think you are trying to attack me, I think you just want to find someone to try to look cool and all knowing against... But you just sound stupid... haha!
Green Day is Hands Down One of My Favorite Band's that You can Jam out and Relate To. No Matter Your Race. I'm a Black Man And As Soon as I Heard Billy and the Boy's Of Green Day As a Youngster, I was Instantly Intrigued and Hooked and Wanted to hear more of Their Music.
I remember buying this album on leave while I was in Afghanistan. This became the soundtrack to my war......odd I know. Every time I hear any of the songs from this album it makes me sad, angry, and a little bit emotional for the good times I had with friends who didn't make it home.
As a 55year old... I....just.....fokin...luv em Still listening to this day.... Makes me wish i had have preservered with my old band! Ahwell! Love Greenday!🎉
This song is a complete masterpiece. I was always a fan of Green Day, but the American Idiot album is truly one of the best albums ever made. "Home is where the heart is and what a shame because everyone's heart doesn't beat the same". Mannn. That lyric alone represents my entire teenage years and twenties. Always trying to find that one person who would make me complete. And the best part about Green Day is that they are phenomenal live. They sound exactly like the recorded version, they are seasoned musicians and it shows. I saw them on their American Idiot tour and I will never forget it. It was a little strange because I had been a fan since the Dookie album but most of the people at the concert were people who had just discovered them so when I lit up my joint, I got quite a few side looks lol. I kept thinking, do you know what concert you are at? But whatever, I still had one of the best nights of my life. Seen them three times total and every time they bring it. If you ever get the chance to see them live, take it, you won't regret it!!
A little too late, piece of advice though don't tell real life people about you being a fan of this band, it's like a cheat code for pushing people away from yourself.
This last summer my mom introduced me to her all time favorite musical artist/band, Green Day. And since then I have just fallen in love with the band. My favorite songs are Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and American Idiot and many more that are really good. I enjoy this band so much I even dressed up as Billie Joe Armstrong for Halloween. They have also giving me something to discover during this lock-down and pandemic.
When I got this album in 2004, when I was 7 years old, my parents were going through a nasty divorce. I was an only child. This Album and specificicqlly this song helped me get my anger and confusion out as an only child. Even thought I didn't understand the meaning behind Jesus Of Suburbia at 7. I'm 24 now and little did I know this whole song would relate to everything I'm currently going through at 24. The love of a S/O ans the destruction of said relationship, the drugs, the dysfunctional home. And feeling so alone.
i remember the day this came out, was in grade 8 and skipped class with my few friends that i had a band with at the time. we started that band because of our love of greenday. My sister said it reminded her when everyone skipped class to see the premiere of Michel Jacksons Thriller in the 80s
I remember being 13 and watching this religiously. Every day on my way home from school I'd watch this on the bus on repeat. I haven't watched it in a while but I just came back to it and damn. Damn I still love this.
hi, im 14, and this is my literal favorite song. i watch the music video at least once a week and i listen to the song constantly. no one really understands the meaning of the music video when i show it to them but i’m glad that so many people do. PUNK ROCK FOREVER !!
The ending of this song is so powerful that I'm overcome with emotion every... single... time. I can't thank this band enough for creating the soundtrack to my teenage years, and for giving me the courage to keep going.

The fact that these videos were actually shot on film & could later be remastered in genuine 4K is just amazing to me. I didn't think they had the foresight to do that with these.
Maybe more good fortune, a number of Queen promos were shot on film from 1978 to 1991
i also didn’t know you could add quality remasters to existing youtube videos, i was looking on the channel for new uploads lol

"It says home is where your heart is, but what a shame, 'cause everyone's heart, doesn't beat the same."
i dont get that someone pls explain that phrase to me
Serdar BİÇER it’s in the third act of the song.

Dearly beloved are you listening such an amazing key change, love this I make sure everyone I know listens 😅❤xxxxx
Agreed, this song brings me so much joy.

I'm an adult now, with a stable home life that I built myself. I'm still every bit the gothic hippie punk I was at 17, but I'm medicated and I'm happy. It's kind of like nostalgia when I watch this, but a more real nostalgia, where you remember the good, the bad and the horrific all with the same bittersweet smile.
hell ya
oh i def feel you on this. I was rebellious as shit and remember a lot of things like this like the party houses with the parents, drinking in parking lots, etc. looking back its sad but there were good times. Def gave me some "life experience" and way to find myself. I eventually figured it out but boy it took a while haha
I was shy and introverted
Yes for sure I remember actually hanging out under the bridge and the older guys gave us cigs and would get us to steal vegetables to throw at random people then we would run off and hide. I met my first love in that scene of course I had to learn to fight other guys when she messed around, sadly she passed early from drugs rip baby. Remember we would write and draw offensive stuff on everything we could. Sort of confused but we were just trying to escape this conformity that finally caught our asses.
I remember when I was 11 and my dad gave me a lecture on how St Jimmy is not some one to idolize. I've been disappointing him ever since
😂
I mean do y’all actually read the lyrics? Billie makes it clear that he’s not someone to idolize either…smh
Your dad was right. Honor your mother and father, whether they deserve it or not. There is a blessing for you in later life if you do.
Yes! Losing everything is such a fire way to live life isn't it?
Thanks angel.
This is not a song, this is not a story. This is not fiction. This is the most honest way of showing how broken we all are. Can't thank you enough, Billie Joe Armstrong.

Jesus of Suburbia is my all time favorite Green Day song, it has so much feel and story to it, so many parts that connect your life.

Just noticed years later that this song has 5 movements that each represents the stages of grief
Oh shit, you're right...
is that why the song represents so well what i have been feeling towards this nation as a whole? oh...
Absolutely. Realised only after going through some similar stages.
I noticed it was 5 different songs the first time I heard it on the radio coming over the Sepulveda Pass oh so many moons ago…

"Jesus of Suburbia" has five movements:
I. "Jesus of Suburbia" (0:00 - 1:51)
II. "City of the Damned" (1:51 - 3:42)
III. "I Don't Care" (3:42 - 5:25)
IV. "Dearly Beloved" (5:25 - 6:30)
V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" (6:30 - 9:08)
Since its release, "Jesus of Suburbia" has received universal critical acclaim.
Billie Joe stated in an interview:
"[The song] broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."
He also added:
" ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now."
Armstrong told MTV:
"Right after I came up with [the phrase] ‘American Idiot,’ I came up with [the album’s protagonist], ‘Jesus of Suburbia, I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I’ve never really read it?’ So, there’s no burning bush, but there’s burning towns and ethics."

It's not sad, just human. We're all rebelling against something and need to blow off stem. Abuse is another animal, but what's in this vid looks like a good home. Mom working as a nurse/assistant, clean house FOOD! It wouldn't call it sad like most people. There's worse.

This album meant so much to those of us trying to grow up in the Bush era, particularly in the years just after 9/11. It really gave voice to all that fear and rage and confusion we had.

But if you listen to the whole album, it seems that Jimmy and JOS are two separate people, because in Give Me Novacane, he says "Jimmy says it's better than air", and in Homecoming, he says "Jimmy died today, blew his brains out into the rain", and in Saint Jimmy, he describes conversations he had with Jimmy, so unless he has multiple personality disprder, it couldn't be the story of Jimmy.
wow you looked that up in Wikipedia and THANKED them
I hold some deep personal connections to this album.

Man I'm an old school Green Day kinda guy but this is easily one of there best tracks. Rock on. 🎸
I'm old enough that my greenday albums through adolescence were Dookie/Insomniac/Nimrod but this speaks to me like nothing else does even though I live in the UK I lived this experience.
This was moden Green Day now it's old school lol
2004 IS OLD SCHOOL BY NOW!!!
@@DiegoHerrera579 2004 is a lot less old school than 1994. And that's just the year Dookie dropped. They were already making music as a legit band for basically a decade at the point.
@@SatanicBarbeque of course but 2004 was almost 20 years ago, so its old school by now
"To live and not to breathe, is to die in tragedy" , faveeeee
Green day are just magical.
Love this one. I have never met anyone who even likes this song a little, and I genuinely believe it's one of their best and most underrated songs.
56 year old punk. Just here to say that Punk will never die. Hail Jesus of Suburbia
RESPECT
This song is my anger management therapy for the last 13 years.
Whats the name of the girl
not exactly a good thing, is it?

"What's the matter with you?"
"Your face..."
Sometimes the simplest insults are the best....
@Dark Light what?
@Dark Light Embarrassing.
You should here scottish comebacks 90% of the time its yer ma
@Dark Light wtf does your comment have anything to do with mine....? Has anyone else ever been embarrassed for someone else...? Like what they said was so stupid you feel sorry for them...? Not one person said they started or inherited punk... I guess it's true that when you're drunk you are in your own world... Bc man your comment was absolutely out of place and dumb... I don't think you are trying to attack me, I think you just want to find someone to try to look cool and all knowing against... But you just sound stupid... haha!
i wish that comment sounded as good in spanish as in english... hahah!! but nah---
Green Day is Hands Down One of My Favorite Band's that You can Jam out and Relate To.
Thank you for your service man
Damn.
Same here man. I was stationed in Bahrain and listened to this cd constantly.
Sorry for loss of of your mates. Stay safe and have a great life
Thanks for your service man 🇺🇲
I no longer listen to punk rock regularly, but this will always be the song I connect with most.
It has progressive roots
This is Pop Punk

Man I grew up in this era of pop punk and it’s legit one of the greatest things to ever happen to me .
As a 55year old...

Still listening to this day....
Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' By Robert Nix
@@redskies4530 I will look it up! Always on the hunt for some good music! Thanks!
New fan of Green Day and this is already my favorite song
welcome
This is the pinnacle of the bands musical capabilities

A little too late, piece of advice though don't tell real life people about you being a fan of this band, it's like a cheat code for pushing people away from yourself.
@@rayanhorami9196 LOL
This last summer my mom introduced me to her all time favorite musical artist/band, Green Day. And since then I have just fallen in love with the band. My favorite songs are Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and American Idiot and many more that are really good. I enjoy this band so much I even dressed up as Billie Joe Armstrong for Halloween. They have also giving me something to discover during this lock-down and pandemic.
@@paulmcgrath6118 I have and I love it too!
relatable
st jimmy in 4k is all what I needed
I'm getting so old that i sympathize with the convenience store owner more than Jimmy
afroinness nope, no matter how old i get, I will always relate to Jimmy. Story of my life
afroinness Imma pull out my shotgun if that was my store
Hahaha oh my gosh. Yes.
No, I still want to go trash my local 7-11 and I'm 34. XD
afroinness I guess the brain damage is wearing off
even at 28 years old greenday is still saving my life
Fuck yeah
Almost 30 now, still breathing does it for me
When I got this album in 2004, when I was 7 years old, my parents were going through a nasty divorce. And feeling so alone.
r/quityourbullshit
looks the exact same to me.. ugh i remember this era.. my dad bought me green day tour DVD and tshirt, belt
Rodrick Heffley is that you?
AHAHAHAHAHA
Poor Susan and Frank
Haha lol......
Poor Gregory, got a disaster brother
Dont you ever compare the one and only jesus of suburbia to fucking Rodrick
radke_in_reverse Make a second account and do both
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I first heard it when the album came out when i was 12. Im 31 now.
I still have all the lyrics memorized. 😂
😂 same here. I remember my friend coming round with the album and listening to it again and again
Same!! Listened to it on my Walkman cd player on the bus non stop
@@kelsn3ss 33 here. Greenday lyrics end up just kind of carved into one's neurons once you learn them xD
This is the best song ever created, no joke here.
Hands down one of the greatest songs ever written
One can not dislike this song.
Mariella Winchester Exactlyyyyyyyy It's my favoriteeeeeee
Mariella Winchester Except the 325 people who did dislike it.
Arion Remix they still liked it deep down inside their hearts
Mariella Winchester One cannot dislike your avatar

i remember the day this came out, was in grade 8 and skipped class with my few friends that i had a band with at the time. we started that band because of our love of greenday.
These comments are so cute :) I lived by this video in 2012, so glad to see people are still starting now
hi, im 14, and this is my literal favorite song. i watch the music video at least once a week and i listen to the song constantly. no one really understands the meaning of the music video when i show it to them but i’m glad that so many people do. PUNK ROCK FOREVER !!
The ending of this song is so powerful that I'm overcome with emotion every... single... time.
I can't thank this band enough for creating the soundtrack to my teenage years, and for giving me the courage to keep going.
I grew up with Green day and it wasn't until just now that I watched this video. I think it's my favorite music video I've ever seen
Same here, I didn't have acess to many videoclips while a teen
so many memories
having this on full blast in your room is just the best feeling
