I miss growing up in PS in the 70s & 80s.😥 I miss all of the open space, and that 'ghost town' feel... Dad had an awesome home at the top of Stevens Rd in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, next door to Debbie Reynolds, they became very good friends over the years when he had the Ingleside. RIP Dad, RIP Debbie.😥😥
I'm an upholster from PS, I've had a great time being inside many iconic homes and learning about Mid Century. I enjoy working with designers, theyre really open and love giving me advice. I was a guest at a few Modernism shows and all thanks to my friends and customers who invited me. Great video thanks for posting
Enjoyed this thx. Well done! ‘…You can feel the optimism…’ when you said that, it occurred to me: that is one of the best accomplishments that a home designer can hope to achieve. How fun and wonderfully historically important this place in the desert has become. Cheers!
Modernism week... how awesome is that?!.. A huge thanks to all the homeowners allowing people to look through their beautiful homes.. I really hope I can visit Palm Springs again one day...love the area, desert scenery and homes...
I like how he describes how the feeling of post war America was captured in the architecture of the time. What a wonderful way of putting it. It is so true! And I think it is true for many other things too. Great video.
Wow. Just wow. I was lucky enough my dream home years ago, beautiful mid century home in Pasadena. I'm still in love with the style and this information just fuels it. Thank you.
I love mid century, it's my passion. Although living on $600 per month after working 2 jobs at a time my whole life, I think it's beyond my budget. I fell in with the wrong guy. My other passion is landscaping. I so admire these architects. If I ever got lucky enough to visit, I would want to stay forever. Which isn't much longer for me.
Palm Springs has great shops. Don’t forget to look for the antique stores, they are out of the way a bit but full of mid century furniture and decorations.
My wife and I lived in Palm Springs nearly 15 years. Could no longer take the absolutely oppresive heat during the summers when between May and November the temp was rarely below 100 degrees.....even at 4a.m. We had many days in July and August pushing 120 and a day or two here and there ABOVE 120. Nightmare driving here during the 'snowbird' months.
Thanks from Australia. I've been watching Palm Springs videos & wondering what is the weather like & how hot does it get etc. and you are the only one to mention it. Low ceiling heights. Any insulation? Would it cost a lot of money to run a split-system every day? Just curious.
Thanks Michael, I have such a strong love for Palm Springs and mid century modern. I’ve been twice and stayed both times at The Rivera , you can almost imagine yourself being at one of the Rat Pack weekend parties , it’s so nostalgic. I built my house in Thailand Palm Springs style , massive thumbs up from me xo
Palm Springs / Palm Desert / Las Vegas are the perfect environment for this design, the elements, and the experience, not that it wouldn't work in others, just that sliding glass walls are perfect in these areas, with the obvious overhangs-
Again, Palm Springs. Some Great still's and this one is again (as per the previous I posted a couple of weeks ago here on FB) particularly informative. I was hoping to get there for about 5 days as a side trip from Arizona this past winter but didn't make it. Looking pretty positive for next winter though. "Think I'll pay and take the tour" (avoiding 'the ravaging horde' during the mid February festival, of course - would love to be there for it, for it's sake, but wouldn't be able to contend with the crowd).
Wow! I know two of Don Wexler's sons rather well. I JUST put 2 and 2 together and realized this. Both of them are super nice guys. One of them was my backpacking camp counselor and the other son was one of my cabin/group mates. We did some very serious 2 week back packing trips in the early 1970's. That camp was excellent, It's the only camp that received a perfect rating of 100% from the American Camp Association [IIRC]. Sadly It is now closed. It was a life changing experience and way ahead of it's time. We would recycle, compost, grow most of our own food, dig our own Wells for water at the main camp, we built several geodesic domes from sapling trees, and we went on intense very long backpacking trips in the Seirras and other NoCal Mtn. Ranges. I will have to call them and tell them all about this UA-cam experience, what a hoot! Thanks for the upload! R.I.P DON WEXLER!
He so right about the feel of "modern" modern homes with supposed mid-century influence. There is something about the new stuff that just leaves you cold. And you even tell by looking at photos and videos. It's like theres no substance to new stuff, there is no charm. Yet the "old" mid century just oozes with it.
I had an uncle who settled down in palm springs after fighting the Germans in WW1. My grandmother told me of how as a little girl in the 1930s depression they got on the train from Ogden and traveled down to see the movie stars. They got to Palm Springs to visit the relatives who settled there, sun glasses, and furs, and all the bling blang, but when arrived and they opened the cupboard for supper there was nothing to eat in the house at all. All they could find was a can of Campbells soup. This was the depression in S. California hanging out with Shirly Temple and Clark Gable but no food.
Just listened to your lecture on the history of Palm Springs and it was fantastic, so much information on mid century modern. It was also very interesting to know about all the architecture that evolved here in the desert. I loved hearing about the history of how Palm Springs became the playground of the moviestars
Great video and very informative, but wish you hadn’t left out Charles Du Bois as one of the significant architects of the period. He did a lot of wonderful work with the Alexanders in neighborhoods like Vista Las Palmas.
Are you from Austin? P. Terry's is pretty good, I have to say, plus I love the architecture. I try to go there if I have a craving on my day trips from Houston.
@@billholden20 sorry for the late response yes. And this type of architecture is definitely becoming more previlent good examples are south Congress and interior design in east austin.
I enjoyed the video. Please stop using Literally as a superlative. I am relieved, however, that the houses are literally made of steel. Figurative steel construction could very well be a tragedy.
Shame on you for not mentioning the inventor of modern architecture Frank Lloyd Wright on purpose or of ignorance. You mentioned Bauhaus. Do more research.
I don't see anything so spectacular about the palm springs houses just not my taste in homes now the big homes in long island new York much better more ilaberat and stylish
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about these beautiful homes and their architects.
As a Palm Springs Realtor I found this video very informative. Michael Stern is definitely an expert on mid century modern! 🌴🏡🌴
I appreciate this guys passion for mid century modern
I love the Palm Springs area and the mid century modern architecture... it’s just an awesome place and those homes suit it so well...

Jeepers! I guess that explains the original “second home” label.

So much knowledge in this video. Thank you for that.
This is a great explanation of the entire history of the Palm Springs MidCentury Modern estate.

I just found this excellent video. I'm very excited about what I learned here about Palm Springs, and can't wait to visit.

He is right, when you are looking at the houses in person, you can feel the post war optimism all over the house
Outstanding, informative and well-made video.
Thank you for such a great video. Your passion comes thru. Love it!
We had a time share condo in PS in the 80's, with a view of the Bob Hope house on the hill. It was a fun time.
Super informative!
Fabulous 💛
Very interesting! Thanks. LOVE mid-century modern.
Thank you for such a well-made video!
this guy is a wealth of knowledge
William Kriesel died last year..rip you made beautiful homes..
You are brilliant to listen to!
Thanks for the explanations 👏🏾💕👏🏾
I’ve got the silk velvet sectional! Incredible.
Beautiful
Michael, I would love the opportunity to photograph some of these homes or some of the "less" celebrated ones.
Someday I`ll go!
Great video and very informative, but wish you hadn’t left out Charles Du Bois as one of the significant architects of the period. He did a lot of wonderful work with the Alexanders in neighborhoods like Vista Las Palmas.
You all would appreciate the fast food chain "p'terrys" mid century approach amazing burger stands!! Really is becoming popular!

I want to make mid century model scale home's for die cast car collectibles i never seen anybody doing it in 1:18 scale
Sadly, events like Modernism Week are often affordable by the elite class.
what about Eichlers?
Eichlers we’re SF Bay Area tract homes, I owned one, they were pretty cool.
Hugh Kaptur?
👍
How many times can he say " Basically " in a sentence ?
well many times...basically!
Basically quite a few.
In 2024 DT will pluck each of those windmills out with his teeth.
It would have helped to have a director making sure intent was secured. This doesn't convince or inform, just look at the subtext. 😉 Amateur hour.

This guy wants you to see his mug, how about showing the houses.
Such a weak representation of mid-century, modern! Shame! On ! You!!
No tour, just a talking head, and stolen still photos.
Waste of money

It's like punctuation use in a sentence. Either you have an appreciation, or you don't.
