  • Ser Erryk and Ser Arryk are not only one of the most tragic tales in Westeros history and two of the most famous knights in the history of the Kingsguard, but a perfect encapsulation of the Dance of the Dragons itself. Not to mention they were 2 of the first characters created for the Dance, mentioned before even Rhaenyra and Aegon! This episode has the twins’ full history, their mentions and influence on ASOIAF characters, parallels to other twins, and quite a lot more. Tune in Mondays at 6 pm eastern for Review episodes and Saturdays at 3 pm eastern for Preview (spoiler-filled) episodes, with special guests.

I believe it was Ned that referred to Robert as “musculed like a maiden’s fantasy” - which is hilarious

Imagine sir Cole being a commander of the kingsguard when Clegane got his white cloak. He refused to swear an oath and wore his white cloak with his personal dark gray armor, like he would have an epic meltdown with Sandor😂

    GoT & HoTD ages are stated as 6 & 40 = 46, or 3 & 20= 23. They didn’t join at ages 8 and 10.
They joined at age 18. Also wasn’t Jamie the youngest named Kingsguard?

Does the Kingsguard not fluctuate in number while there may be a set number (say 7 or so) I would think similar to secret service the more family members the more Kingsguard. I would think it’s more than just family in Kings Landing. I assume Rhanerya had a guard in Dragonstone as well as one for Jace at least. All of Alicent’s children.
Ostensibly anyone who could threaten the King by harming what is precious to him would get a guard. May be different as the children grow focusing on just those in Red Keep and direct line but I don’t think an existing Kingsguard has to always die to add a new one.
Perhaps Viserys saw his family growing and discussed adding more Kingsguard with Ser Harold, impressive twins demonstrate, seems very Vizzy T to add them both, a good example to his sons and grandsons

I think the youngest ever kingsguard was 10; he was only a sworn sword for a single day, but he died protecting his king, who lived because of it. Someone lectures someone else about it in the books. I can’t remember, maybe Jaime lectures Joffrey. So he’s not generally regarded as “the youngest kingsguard ever” because he was “made a kingsguard” (which usually following their public, ceremonial appointment to office, has a follow up ceremony in the sept where they swear their vows before the gods; it’s usually a whole thing, which is why their vows are so closely tied to the seven and the faith, because during this time Visenya and Aegon were trying to make concessions to the Faith Militant for giving up their arms, so they were using seven all over the place and trying to put on an active show of accepting the religious cultures of the people over which they wished to rule) in the midst of chaos, on a battlefield during a messy and perilous retreat, and while this ten year old kingsguard didn’t live to see the next day, he still accepted the duty on the spot, and succeeded in protected the king’s life with his own, so he was buried with full honors befitting of the white cloak, but when people discuss the youngest ever kingsguard, it’s a whole deal that Jamie was the youngest ever appointed at the time he was “honored” with this lifelong office by Ares-at fifteen or sixteen. That is, until Loras Tyrell came along and joined the kingsguard at one year younger than Jamie, just in case the reader missed all the other parallels. 😂 the point is, when they’re discussing who was youngest, they don’t include the true one day kingsguard since it was such unusual circumstances and he literally never even wore the white cloak until he was being buried in it. They’re discussing those who are like full-fledged tourney champs who earned the position via competition performance or some act of gallantry-with riding and fighting skills befitting entrusting the life of the king to in normal, everyday circumstances, as well as, like you said, keep the king’s secrets, guard his family, be wary of subterfuge and less obvious threats, etc. So anyone less than 20 is crazy young to appoint to a position that serious and that sacrosanct.
