  • During this webcast Gary Kamiya will focus on Japantown and the Fillmore District, its history and development. Along the way, Gary will inject his personal experiences and commentary to enliven it all.
    A Bay Area native, Gary Kamiya is the author of Cool Grey City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco, the classic book on San Francisco past and present suggested reading for any guide, awarded the 2013 Northern California Book Award in creative nonfiction and with more than 50,000 copies sold.
    Until March 2018 he was the executive editor of San Francisco Magazine, and he is the co-founder and longtime executive editor of the groundbreaking web site Salon.com, where he reported from the Middle East, covered three Olympics, and wrote about politics, pop culture, literature, art, music and sports.
    His local history column, "Portals of the Past," runs every other Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle and will soon be a podcast.
