Number 1 with a young dog , dont rush him on his pointing. Walk up give him a minute or 2 ,praise him and then ASK him to flush. AS for retrieve ? Take to where you saw the bird fall and let him alone . Who has the nose?? You or the dog ??
I did the same with the safety on a Citori. Muscle memory sucks!

I realized as I was trying to direct him to that bird that he was on it and I was calling him off of it. Lesson learned! Appreciate the comment.
