Yeah, I agree that windows XP was so good, so beautiful and kind of futuristic to me. I am a newer generation person who doesn't grow up with windows XP. My first computer back then was running on windows 7. But when I try installing windows XP on a virtual machine and explore a little bit, I am really impressed like wow, this OS looks so good for that era. The user interface looks so good. I don't know, why now Microsoft changed everything.
amazing how much just only in the last 100 years alone or let alone 20 years how much technology has advanced. as a kid we barely had tape players switching to cd, and then long after that was having smaller digital storage pods to play music etc etc.

About 12 years ago I bought a used Q1Ultra P which was the last model and has a 1.2ghz core solo cpu. Gave it a boost in power over the atom based ones. I upgraded it to Windows 7 and used it as a network troubleshooting device. Wifi Radio scanners and such software. I used it for that for almost 10 years before retiring it for a smaller one of those pocket size PCs that were trendy a few years ago. Surprisingly it still carries a charge on the battery. As a handheld pc that I could map out wifi signals and having physical ethernet port for doing things like packet sniffing when troubleshooting networking gear it worked great. It has an extra slot that was meant for a cellular modem. I installed an upgraded wifi card and modified it with external antenna ports. Someone commented that I looked like a ghostbuster with a pke meter when I was doing a site survey once haha.
9:25 "Etiquette mode" was a kind of proper noun in South Korea in the 2000s that referred to Silent Mode. It seems it was translated as it is when it was released in North America
I got this right out of highschool in 2007/8ish after doing hours of research to find something that suited what I needed. I had an early AT&T 3G dongle too and felt like I was living in the future considering this predated smart phones and tablets by years. This machine turned so many heads and was such a great investment back then. Saved me from so many hours of boredom because it was capable of so much in terms of media and gaming. Thanks for highlighting this little obscure slice of history with this wonderful video!
Indeed! At this time, my phone was running Windows Mobile 6 (and it was rather gutless too) but I could at least access word documents and stuff, this tablet is on another level.
You could very much basically jump start the battery. Most of batteries I come across on older devices that are dead and show no charge it's likely from the BMC of the battery shut off due to low cell voltage. I've charged the cells themselves (by opening partially the battery) to access the leads and raw charge the cells to atleast 3.7v then plug the battery back into the device and try and charge. It's worked most of the time for me
be careful when cells reach a certain discharge threshold there is a risk of dendrite formation. This is why BMS disconnect and prevent charging. If dendrites pokes through the insulation you got a nice short if unlucky a thermal event.
I discovered UMPCs a few months ago and they've fascinated me ever since. I find the concept of mushing a laptop into a pocket size really interesting and I liked to see how different manufacturers made these, especially with Sony's UMPCs. Unfortunately there's not many videos on UA-cam covering these types of devices, so it's nice to see you release a video with the full unboxing experience, showing off everything!
The grandfather of Steam Deck, those umpc were designed to capture the pocketpc / palm on business side but failed on my opinion due to price and notebook with higher specs that were flooding at the time. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.
Also low cost netbooks like the MSI Wind, Asus Eepc, and others were also flooding the market around this time. I have a Lenovo netbook that can fold its touch screen around and act like a tablet, and I probably paid less than $500 for it brand new. This Samsung Q1 seems a little cooler, though, too bad it was so expensive. :)
I like the clam shell ones more like HP Jornada and Sony Vaio P with the extra wide screen. They are kind of making a comeback with GPD Win Mini and pocket and they should continue offering low cost options.
Hey man! I’ve bought several (and broken several) of these. For the battery, with it plugged in, remove and reinstall the battery. Make sure to slide the latch to lock it. I’ve gotten every one of my new in box ones to charge this way, even if they were stubborn. Beware that rear camera when removing the bottom. I have had a couple of casualties due to those…
The rear camera is adhered to the motherboard with some adhesive. It’s not connected directly to the motherboard. It’s connected to the display assembly. You can gently pry it off of the motherboard if you want to take the board out (to remove the cmos battery, repaste, etc)

I get that the Windows experience did not translate well into mobile, but I still get annoyed how Microsoft gets little credit for mobile and tablet computing. They were doing this stuff way before apple. Apple perfected the user experience for sure, but the hardware and general concept was done by MS and PC makers for years before the iPhone or iPad.
Well the issue is that they aren't for the same public. Umpc where for tech savy business ppl while Apple targets general audience. I'd say Windows 8.1 was the closest Microsoft ever came to tablet greatness, especially when HP released its $100 Stream 7 tablet. That thing was an incredible value, and Windows 8.1's Start screen and charms menu worked really well on it.
At the end of the day, all those products ended up in the "failure bin" due to their low sales and no one remembers the fails. The iPad and iPhone sold like crazy, because, at the end of the day, the user experience is what matters. It doesn't matter that it runs Windows and all my stuff at the bus if it's not good enough to the point where I'd use it on the bus. And I say that while unapologetically loving the device on this video.

7:30 It's a classic trick to speed up performance of an HDD under XP. HDDs partition by cylinder, and the closer to the center of the spindle you were, the faster your HDD would read and write, there were a few names for this practice like "Shimming", "Column Partitioning", "Partition Alignment", etcetera. So companies and smart IT Admins would make a generic small partition at a low cylinder number, and thus close to the spindle, install Windows there to force the fastest possible startup, and then expand the partition later. It seems like instead of expanding the partition, they just used a second partition to make the remaining space available, which can still be helpful to have already done if you know about the trick and plan on taking advantage for your applications too.
I was supposed to be issued one of these as at the time I was an IT person. After several got dropped and destroyed they started issuing slightly fancier laptops than the rest of the staff. Always wished I was higher on the list so I could have at least used one for a while.
You should really dual boot Windows Vista and Windows XP on the Q1 since you already have a 2nd blank partition and you could then experience Windows Origami which was an interface designed especially for UMPCs. I have both Windows Origami executable setups which i have archived on the Internet Archive. Just to know how it will perform in Windows Vista, since the OS had been well focused on Mobility for UMPCs and Tablet PCs.
Great stuff! I got an Asus R2H kicking around, which is surprisingly similar. As for the battery: It might be worth leaving it plugged in for a whole day or even two - doesn't hurt anyway. If it is completely depleted, it might take ages to tickle-charge back up.
im at 5:41 and i like how this tablet is laid out. i like the toggle buttone and the enter key in thos spots. and it havine a usb and an sd card slot is perfect. and xp tablet edition is a good version of xp so i may have to find one of thse to use.
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day. I loved the idea of mobile computers that weren't just laptops. I had a Dell Axim x51 PDA a few years before that came out, and even though it was pretty limited being based on WinCE, I spent so much time writing little programs for it for this or that.
After going through various OS I would still love to see the tizen os on upcoming devices encourage samsung not give up for many reasons. Bought 2 TV so far and the kind of experience you enjoy is unbeatable. Weather it's picture quality or audio quality .I tested many sound bars as well the fact is that the audio quality from the TV itself will surpass most of the high quality products. Actual buyers review.
I saw multiple car mechanic using this thingy :) as its windows based while software they use for diagnostics etc with ECU is mostly designed for windows. its easier to hold than laptop, but still its big enough :)
Growing up I've always wanted a UMPC but never had the money to afford them. Glad the fad is gaining more mainstream attention now that I have money to buy stuff like the GPD Win, Steam Deck, or ROG Ally.
I AM SO HAPOPY TO SEE THIS. I used to be really into umpcs and went through playing with most of them. This samsung one was my favorite cause of the fact it was true to the umpc vibe. On the note of the temp partition, it was kind of used as a linux like temp partition from what I learned. You can just re install any os and reclaim the space or do it manually like you said. I sold all mine recently, bust still love this form of pc. Why i think I love the steam deck so much ahah.
Omg! I remember this tablet! I got an amazing story to tell. Back when I was in the 5th grade getting ready to go to middle school, the school decided to try an all computer only course, and I decided to sign up for it cause I thought it was pretty cool. I got selected along with 59 other students for a total of 60, and we were given these Q1 tablets. It was an amazing idea on paper, but in reality, it was poor execution. Computers were slow turning on due to all the school software they had on em, and getting everyone connected to a program took forever. The school provided us a flexible keyboard mouse and casing so we didn't have to use the small keyboard/mouse. We even got to customize the cases we were provided. My dad actually spray painted mine silver, so it will be easy to spot. In the end, we only did the program for the first quarter of the school year before we reverted back to regular learning, but we got to keep the computers until the very end of the year. The very next year, the school ended up using the tablets among the 3 different grades moving forward.
just a thought but I feel like the gaming experience could've been vastly improved by changing the display orientation to landscape flipped. that would've allowed you to use the analog stick for aiming the way people are used to and might've made other keybinds more easily accessible while playing since they'd be right below the d-pad / analog stick.
So I had one of these gifted to me back in 2012 as a second hand unit. It was an ok performing pc if using basic applications. Mine came with a ‘case’ of sorts which had a usb keyboard/mouse combo with a small usb hub on. It was an ergonomic nightmare with the case, I never used it. The tiny keyboard takes some getting used to but if you were a blackberry user, it was perfectly serviceable. Thanks for the memory, it bought a lot back to me!
Bought Q1 Ultra few months ago specifically to play strategies and adventures on a plane. I was lucky, my battery still holds like 4-6 hours of charge. And it's a beast for HOMM3. Yeah, that I was getting weird looks sometimes but it's totally worth it. My model came without webcams or SD slot, but it actually had 4G and TV tuner - Even with pull-out antenna!
The reasoning for that “temp partition” is short-stroking, which isn’t nearly as dirty as it sounds. It’s used to identify the most performant sections of the drive- those closest to the edge, where the disk is spinning fastest and therefore access times will be fastest- and install the OS to those sections only to increase the perceived responsiveness of the OS
I had one of these around 2010. I bought it second-hand in pretty good shape, and I think it was still a few hundred. For a while I used it pretty heavily as a video chat device on my desktop. This was before Microsoft took over Skype, and it could still run on this machine despite the pretty weak CPU. Software moved on though, and I didn't have any useful alternative software to run on it so it's gone. I remember the 1024x600 vertical resolution being really limiting. Lots of apps don't cope well with that height, and things end up off screen. It was part of what made gaming nonviable even with older titles.
the battery is most likely fine, but if the protection kicked in you will have to open it and charge and balance the cells with an external lipo charger. If you can open it non destructively and have someone that has a drone that uses common RC lipo batteries you could ask him to charge them back to 3V. The protection commonly works on the battery power itself, so if the battery self discharges to 0V the battery could still be recovered but the protection will be dead so youll have to charge the cell slowly, say 5mA until the voltage gets to 3V open circuit, and then you can charge them at 0.5C, though being so old and being overdischarged id stay around 0.2C, make it a 5 hours charge or so. It may give the cell time to self heal or something.
that was pretty common to have one partition for system and another for "data" in the XP era. That was because it was a very first "always on-line" era and people tended to malware up or screw up their disk all the time. I'm surprised you forgot about that.
I actually found 2 of these while sifting through e-waste at my old job. Sadly both had screwed up gpu's. I really wished I kept one and attempted a bodge fix with a heat gun.
I completely agree with regards to the Black Mesa opening tour. It's great, but every single time you start a new game it gets a bit annoying. If I could skip it, that'd be optimal. Maybe I should create a save that starts just after the tour and always use that to start a new game. Saves should be transferable, I hope. (Why does transferable look wrong with one 'r' yet the spell check tells me that's the correct spelling?)
10 years or so ago a handful of these went up on eBay for about $100 each and a bunch of IRC buddies and I excitedly bought them... and then could not figure out what on earth do with them. Mine sits on my shelf next to my TRS-80 Model 100.

As for the battery: It might be worth leaving it plugged in for a whole day or even two - doesn't hurt anyway. If it is completely depleted, it might take ages to tickle-charge back up.
Your videos are pretty much solid, and very well. I love your videos so much.!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man, so elegant... Plus windows XP, so nice.
6:10 "We have to do some stupid in every MJD video". Gotta love that, and yes. You really do
Ayy finally another mjd video I always look forward to seeing your videos mjd as always
now there’s literal pc consoles (the kind of windows pc but portable and with joysticks)
i was fortunate enough to buy one of these. it was great! ahead of its time.

"mom, i want a steamdeck"
"We already have steamdeck st home"
The steam deck at home:
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day. I loved the idea of mobile computers that weren't just laptops. I had a Dell Axim x51 PDA a few years before that came out, and even though it was pretty limited being based on WinCE, I spent so much time writing little programs for it for this or that.
This is so nostalgic! We were each given one at my school
Omg this is a great video thank to michael mjd
I own one of these and love it, with a few simple upgrades they are still really useful i use it for doing RTA in theaters...
Omg, I would have LOVED this back in '07!
I saw multiple car mechanic using this thingy :) as its windows based while software they use for diagnostics etc with ECU is mostly designed for windows. its easier to hold than laptop, but still its big enough :)
Great Vid Mike I Have 3 of these sadly one is dead but my fav one still works
I was waiting for a video from MJD and UMPCs/Tablet PCs are my favourite devices! Love it!
This is the "We have Steam Deck at home" tech.
I have a few of these. Absolutely love them. I bought em awhile back when they weren't well known and we're like 30 dollars on ebay
I wish we could get some old tech, but with modern features. I know it seems redundant, but the nostalgia!
I love this design, it gives me tv-show hacker pad vibes
SICK!
i like it
Wanted one of these so bad. I was so into the UMPC craze as a kid
this device looks so awesome if Samsung tried to continue making it it will have so much sales i would definitely buy
The timing on this was pretty good given Half Life just had it's 25th anniversary.
The touchscreen is surprisingly good for 2007
I had one of these around 2010.
My test on classic devices is "if this can run half life its a beast"
Samsung and their ultra really go way back. Even now they have ultra this ultra that
This is precursor to modern Windows 10 tablets. Very interesting
thank you for uploading :) love tha videos
Great video. RIP Linode.
the battery is most likely fine, but if the protection kicked in you will have to open it and charge and balance the cells with an external lipo charger.
It may give the cell time to self heal or something.
soon as i saw the specs i thought about half life 1 xd.
then i saw you installing it my heart skipped a beat lol you ROCK!
My gym teacher in 5th grade had something similar to this, I have no idea why. He would hold it in his hands all class just staring at the desktop.
This video started playing in the background while I was working on other tasks, at first I thought this was a Cathode Ray Dude video.
that was pretty common to have one partition for system and another for "data" in the XP era. That was because it was a very first "always on-line" era and people tended to malware up or screw up their disk all the time. I'm surprised you forgot about that.
Yes a New Video!!
I love being early for MJD videos
hey! fyi the A110 isn't Atom, but Pentium M (Stealey platform).
I always wanted something like this!
are you going to (or did you already) upload the recovery media to the Internet Archive?
I remember seeing this in south korea back when windows 7 didn't release
Great video thanks! I've just got one of these myself but need to install an operating system..
Wow this is interesting…
Thank you for this piece of info.
Never experienced but I miss UMPCs. More than smartphones and well great to see compared to Steam Deck, Aya Neo, GPD and more handhelds of today.
10 years or so ago a handful of these went up on eBay for about $100 each and a bunch of IRC buddies and I excitedly bought them... and then could not figure out what on earth do with them. Mine sits on my shelf next to my TRS-80 Model 100.
God... I remember Microsoft's Project Origami ARG like it was yesterday... So much hype for so little substance lol.
