The Queen’s Gambit Declined is the most popular way to fight the attempt by white to give up (gambit) his c4 pawn. It has been played by top masters since the 19th century, and it will never lose popularity due to its solidity, flexibility, and the amount of different options it gives to black.
In this video I have covered the Alatortsev Variation, also known as the Charousek or the Petrosian Variation, depending on where you look. It is an extremely flexible and transpositional opening system for black which can enter several main line defenses in the QGD, such as the Tartakower, but it has independent lines as well. It starts with 3. Be7, preparing to castle as soon as possible, and making the pin with Bg5 less effective in advance.
By not developing the knight to f6, black is preventing the annoying Bg5 pin, which comes naturally in many QGD variations.
On the highest levels, the Alatortsev is more popular than on the club level. This is probably due to the flexibility and subtlety of the opening and the options it provides, which very strong players can use and appreciate to try and outplay one another.

Hi Stjepan! First time I'm commenting on one of your videos but wanted to first say that I've been watching them a lot lately and you've certainly become my new favourite.. I feel like no one else takes this methodical and educational approach.. at least no one that I've found. I love that you're not only ~300-400 points higher than me because it makes your videos more relatable.
Anyway, on to my one comment for your consideration. I am a super visual person. I learn guitar from youtube videos too and to give you an idea of what I mean, I often resort to downloading the videos and flipping them vertically through software so I can see the reverse view so I better grasp the finger positions and everything.
I'm like that with chess too..I guess I'm just not advanced enough to be able to fully "see" the game with notation alone.. that's why reading positions in books is useless for me.. if I can't see the position I can't commit it.
So with that said.. it would be super awesome if you could add a feature to all your videos and basically display a very shrunk down feed of the board upside-down.. in the top-right corner would perfect.. where there's only gray empty space right now. It could be 1/8 the size of the main video and it would still be super useful for someone like me.
Otherwise I might have to download your videos and flip your whole body around ;p and I wouldn't want that.. I'd want to see both sides.. so I know how to play it as both white and black even though it's "a defense". Two's better than one in this case ;)

The main point behind 3...Be7 is to avoid the exchange variation proper. White can still exchange but will have to do so with his bishop on f4 rather then on g5, which makes a world of difference.

Amazing Stjepan. I studied the QGD for Black some time ago and it seemed so dull to me. I felt like a punching bag while playing it. I didn't know that this line is called the Alatortsev and your explanation made it so much understandable and better looking to me :D

Your comments about dynamic players left me in stitches. I would call myself a pragmatic player. When I say we 2000 players can't play I mean I expect the opponent to be as bad as me. At least on lichess. Sacrifice material for the sheer joy of liberating material! It isn't necessary to know what you are doing. Or even obtain compensation. Sooner or later the opponent will crack. Extra material only gets in the way. It is only necessary to maintain self-confidence. Since my last bout of bad play I'm 9-1 in penance mode. The loss was to a 2400 and 2 wins came from 2100s. A 1600 gave me perhaps the most decent run for my money. But it was the piece offerings to players around 2000 that I was really happy with. Never a doubt they wouldn't crack. Dump a piece and set a stopwatch. When will they crack? Place bets.

For those of us who want to first study the main line, can you completely explain the main line BEFORE going into the sidelines and variations?
As is now, it is very difficult to follow along. You go into great detail on the variations, but unfortunately this creates confusion rather than clarity.

Yup. QGD is my favourite opening but, since I don't have much experience with it's theory, its pretty overwhelming to keep up with all the nuances before understanding the ideas in the main line.
