I love how he welcomes other people's ideas, but is clear on why he stands by his ideas, too. He is fair. I liked, "I would put an 'interesting' by this move. I still think my move is more direct and to the point, but Rfb1 is interesting and deserves attention." I liked when he said, "Slowly, I can convert this into a win. No question. Slowwly we will convert this into? A win." Confident and clear. That helps me think and stay the course when I'm playing!
Great lecture, as all the lectures made by GM V. Akobian. If GM Akobian and GM Y. Seyrawan could make a video lecture every day I'm sure all we follow them would increase our level much faster.
Var Akobian is the best teacher you can get, he really helps you in your thinking process. In other words, "How to Think" in chess. I always learn A LOT and i watch the lectures over and over again from time to time. Its always a thrill when i receive a notification saying that a new lecture from GM Akobian is available in the chess club youtube page. Please keep it going!!!

Var’s lecture is helpful right from the beginning as he goes over different move orders that go into different openings. Explaining these slight differences that unfold into different patterns is much appreciated.
Great video. Mr. Akobian's lectures are very specific (to openings I never ever play). But I remember his topics, solutions, and strategies better than the other instructors.

Excellent lecture! Hats off to GM Akobian! In response to the minority attack, black can adopt the following plan: leave the bishop on c8, reposition the knight to f8 like in the video (Nb8-d7-f8), play g6 instead with the idea of playing the manoeuvre Nf8-e6-g7. Once the knight has landed there you'll be able to play Bf5! which preempts any kingside attacks and getting rid of the white squared bishop in the process. This will take the poison out of the minority attack since endgames will be much more drawish. Then again, white can adopt different strategies like going for central control with f3-e4 ideas. It'd have been nice seeing Akobian touch on these subjects as well! Anyway his insights are amazing and he's got superb teaching skills!

He teaches like a real teacher thus. Not unlike any chess vlogger who focuses only on their own carrier and their content is very airy without much explanation. It's like a bowl without a rice content.
Awesome video yet again from akobian. After a few years of following these and other games on youtube relevant to my opening repertoire I am now winning loads more games in my chess club. I realise now that the trick is to think middle game rather than loads of meaningless variations where you can come off the rails the first moment your opponent deviates from your learnt path.

How terrific teacher. The best I've ever seen. Chess look to be simple like capablanca, and so much of ideas behind simple and complex moves that you can get alot about how to play with pieces.
I love alternating between Finegold and Akobian videos. Both GMs, but very different styles of teaching. I always take home something different with each.

I love all Akobian's lectures. It's so eluminating to see how a GM justifies every single move.
I put this game into my engine which tells that a5? was a blunder losing a single pawn (b5), but with Ra7 the game continuous. What "ruined" the game was the following Rb8?? - losing a second pawn on a5.
At least he could see far ahead enough to know that he had no hope. This reminds me of myself.

I came up with the exact same idea at the same time. Then Akobian explained why it fails. Then I'm like, that's why Mike and I are rated about the same and not GMs lol
@@Locke19901 At 25:06 The queen stares at the rook on the E file. So black can't capture the bishop that took the knight. I don't see why it fails.

The really surprising moves to me were Nfd2 and Qa4 in the opening
Both broke opening principles but had good reasons behind them
The key to beating players who are almost at a similar level to you is to introduce plenty of choices so minor cumulative mistakes can be made

Carlson once beat the minority attack by a very sharp kingside attack against white on the other side of the board but this is not easy for mere mortals

Actually 9. e3 is the best move at move depth 18 according to Komodo. Then at move 10. it settles for Bf4 but the difference is very small. At 19 (38 ply) it is even better to play Bf4. Well I wouldn't have been sure but the B with the Q on a5 looks as though pressure can be brought onto Black's centre squares.

I am no master but I prefer Bf4 because black has ideas of playing a6-Rb8-b5. Also Bh4 can
be met by g5. This weakens the Black King but I am not good at executing such early attacks on the king. I prefer to play more positionally.
I recently had a game featuring the Ragozin and I actually misplayed the opening. Now I know what to do. Thanks for the video. At 6:00 can't black play h6 Bh4 g5 Bg3 and Ne4 with pressure? I hesitated to play the Bg5 line in my game due to this. Just want to have this clarified.
I like his lectures also, I often don't pick the moves. But I find these positional things almost harder than tactical things. It helps to know the opening. But if you don't then training like this would help. But the computer takes a long time to reject Bxc3, I suspect because it initially is "thinking that there is one less piece attacking e4. Then it finally opts for c6 as Akobian says. So its a lesson here for Black players also. The two Bs should be kept on.

Isnt the comparative value of bishop dependent on the position?i would generally prefer my knights in closed positions as they are not blocked by pawns???
hello i am newbie. why don't we just take the pawn because it is not guarded ? at the first game. while opening.

Nc6 blocks the check and protects the bishop. This is a theoretical move and is played quite a lot. The idea is to misplace the knight on c6 and make it take a bit longer for black to get his c pawn into the fight for the center. However, it’s pretty double edged since the queen is also a bit misplaced on a4.

i wonder if at 45:43 if black plays b5 then i dont think white will play b4 then black plays a4 i know that c6 pawn is weaken but still black can possibly hold on it as a and b files are closed not giving white some space on a and b files
At 35:44 after Qxb5, what if black had played Ba6? Or even Ra7? Little too late to comment I believe... But some advice would be really helpful... Thank you :)

Instead of Qb4...Rb1 is very strong because Rb8 is not possible because of Bg3...and they kept missing it ..

what about Bf3 at 28:13? If black plays b5 then Qc2 and black has not any good defence for e4 square..after any blacks move white will play e4 and if black does not take take pawn on e4 his knight will fall
And Bd3 was the best move (by only a fraction) but after c4 then Bc2 is all better than Be2 although Be2 seems logical as he can possibly go to f3.... But I think I would choose Be2 as potentially the R on e8 is exerting pressure. Hard these "obvious" points of the game....to decide. Interesting.

25:11 can white QxRe8 check Kh2 and then white bishop move out?
Firstly, it is black to move you can't take the rook right away. But yeah that position is winning for white because black can't take the bishop (because rook would be hanging and you would have a terrible pawn structure) so white traded a rook for a pawn and two knights.
9. Qa4 0-0 10. e3 h6!? (10....Nb6 11.Qc2 cxd4 12. cxd4 Be3 This position is about equal) . I think 9. e3 line allowing 9...Qa5 is fine for white after the dust settles white has a slightly better position.

why bishops is stronger than knights?
+Shidqi Yudotomo bishops are worth more than knights in the opening, they also have the ability to pin other pieces such as knights or rooks. Knights have the ability to get forks but bishops control a farther range than the knight

Why didn't white just play queen a4 check winning the bishop on b4?

GM Akopian is always yawning during his lectures.
First off this is great video thanks. However a nitpick at 23ish minutes you talk about why bishop e2 is better than d3 because of c4 losing a tempo its not quite that simple because the bishop on c2 removes a variation for black that makes it impossible for them to kick your queen. After Bc2 what does black do? b5 is not good as you said because it hurts them kingside thier Nb6 line is now shut down because bishop takes f6 is now destroying their pawn structure as black can no longer play knight takes queen and favorably trade because after bishop takes queen rook takes bishop is still losing an entire piece to the bishop on c2. Re6? then white castles and black does what? the computer thinks Qe3 is ok but after a3? white is better black has no good way to get at the white king and most of his decent ideas leave his king far more exposed.
Its worth noting it does work out very well in your game as he plays a6 but this is a mistake the best move is Nb6
