The Blindman Method of blind cleaning

- This is the proper way to wash and wax a standard mini-blind, using the method I've used for the last twenty-two years. This video shows a standard aluminum mini-blind. However, this method can also be used with PVC and faux wood blinds. DO NOT use on any natural wood blinds or fabric shades that could be damaged by excessive water.
Absolute pain in the arse to maintain, but hands down you have the best system around, my hat off to you bud, well done and thanks for taking the time to share.
I'm so glad I found this. This is the quickest and easiest method I found. Thanks Blindman! This is genius!
Thank you for the video. The wash board and the drying rack are brilliant. Soon as Spring rolls in I am doing the blinds.
I never would have thought about this as a business but they are a pain and I think you came up with a good idea.
Excellent Blind man. I was about to chuck my blinds and drop $500 for new ones, but this method makes sense and I can do it with materials at hand. Thanks
Dan
I searched for this topic because we are in self quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic and feel like I should be cleaning. Thank you for this video!
pro trick : watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Finn Reyansh Yea, been using flixzone} for years myself =)
Thorough explanation and easy to do Thanks for sharing your method! Best wishes for your business to keep growing!
I know it looks like I’m being very rough with the blind and bumping the wand around a lot. It’s because I’ve been doing this for a very long time. I’m comfortable handling blinds and know how much abuse they can take without harming them. I have several thousand customers who can tell you that I never damage there blinds. Plus, I also have the parts and the ability to repair them in the off chance I do break one. That said, this video was originally made as a training video for the people who bought my Orange County California operation in 2015. It was not really intended for happy home owners who want to clean their own blinds. Non-professionals would be wise to take extra care if they attempt this on their own.
What kind of soap or bleach do you use
thanks for this and i hope one day in the future you are able to regain your sight
Will Hung, I had laser eye surgery. Now, I only need reading glasses...LOL!
I am in San Diego and would use you if you were closer. My blinds are filthy as hell due to the Airplanes going overhead etc. Also if we could set up something like this in our little complex that would be amazing. Great idea man and ty for sharing this.
I used the Smart and Final brand of Cleaner Degreaser. Any cleaner degreaser will work. I add about 1/3 gal to a five gallon bucket of water. I also add about 1/2 cup of all-in-one car wash/wax by Pro.
K I tried your method and LOVED it. Best way for me no doubt. Thank You for you video.
Genius. Looks like it takes a while to setup the cleaning station properly, but time well spent rather than fussing with each individual slat and barely getting them clean. Can't wait to try it. Thank you, sir!
Well done, thoughtful and useful information.Thank you.
Great thorough explanation, Easy to understand and follow. Thank you!
Stay tuned Sunita, I am working on putting together some helpful repair videos. The hardest part about re-cording a blind or shade is having the proper cord. You can't use common cord that you can find at the hardware or craft stores. It has to be the round braided cord that is made for use in window coverings. There are several places it can be ordered online. But your best bet is to call a professional blind repairman.
The business is located in Laguna Nigule California. please call 949-496-5519 for questions and appointments. Glad you enjoyed the video..
Hi. What type of brush I'd that?
Excellent video . Thank you so much🙏
I just subscribed blindman! You should make a video on how you clean faux or wood blinds. I like your style buddy.
Pro Joe's Window Cleaning
Use the same method for Faux Wood Blinds. Real Wood Blinds should be hand cleaned with Murphy’s Oil Soap. This method uses too much water for real wood and could ruin them.
Very informative and exacting! Thank you so much for all of the good tips. Blessings to you. JMJ
Great help! Thanks! If you open the blinds you won’t need to manually pull them down. I wondered what would happen if they were any longer. Your arms were getting short. LOL! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
hey, what would you use on blinds that have a dirt grim? like a film on it. I am sure soap wont break that up but need a spray of some type. what would you recommend?
Bill Armao Car wash/wax solution works pretty good. But, commercially, I used Smart & Final Cleaner Degreaser. That stuff will cut through anything. Mix about 1:3 with water.and car wash/wax. Rinse well...Aloha
denthemen92629 thx for getting back. Let me ask seen a lot of people using over cleaner. Many diff people and videos from beginning to the end. You ever tired that?
Also can u put a link in here to that cleaner?
Bill Armao, I’ve never tried oven cleaner. Sounds like an expensive overkill to me. Sorry, I dint have a link. Happy Cleaning!
denthemen92629 ok it does work and works great! Cleans the brim off. I did it and was easy
Where can I buy a brush like that??
Good video! Wish you had shown how to remove the blind from the window. Mine have me baffled! I have a house full of these dust and grime collectors they're a nightmare.
There are a lot of different blind brackets. The most common are like the one in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/pQC4C96DLdo/v-deo.html
Im looking at 25 year old blinds. May have been ivory? They are a carmel yellow now. Yuck! I hope they come clean.
I like this method, where YOU clean the blinds instead of me haha I need to find someone local to do this, it is a service I would be happy to pay for a couple times per year
Hello, I know this is an old video however, I'm having a problem getting down and putting back up Levolor Blinds. I need to wash them hanging. I'm trying to find a quick way to do this and inside the home. It's very difficult because of the lack of a hard surface. Any suggestions? They also got stuck together and paint came off. How can I fix this for the customer?
Also how did you make that board that you're setting the blinds on?
thanks for showing me how to wash my own blinds so i dont have to hire you or any other struggling blind cleaner, your a genius!
Whatyoudo, I’m not personally in the blind cleaning business anymore. I originally made this as a training video for the employees of the company that bought me out. It took on a life of its own after that. However, even if I was still in the business, I have no problem educating people on how to do something for themselves. There is plenty of work for clients who don’t do these types of chores themselves to keep professional blind cleaning businesses busy.
Btw - it’s, You’re a genius...
How'd you make your wash board? What materials?
Those blinds were metal ones. I found that this method is very labor intensive especially when you don't have a place to hang them as you do. There are better ways to do this as I have seen on YouYube. Thanks for the effort.
If you don’t have a place to hang them, then your not using this method. I found it to be a very effective way to clean blinds during my 25+ years in business.
Great job 👏. Although with this technique even though you do both sides, there that fine line where the blinds over lap. Leaving a line still that gets missed. I still have to lay it flat & go over individually to remove that over lapped line. Takes forever! Does yours still have that over flapped line?
That’s a good question. I actually go over how to make sure that thin line of dirt on the edge of each slat gets cleaned, right around the 6 minute mark in the video. 🤙🏽
Thank you! You're the man!
My plastic dark colored blinds are literally melting after only 8 months! . They sent me new ones but same color which I believe is why they are melting and bending. They will not send me white.
Is there a spray I can put on them to protect from the sun?
I've been doing it this way for 20 yrs.
I like this method, I do this in the shower LOL, quick and clean
I wish I had that set up. I hung mine on the basketball rim !
What a great video, I thought it might have been out of my scope but will give it a go.
mark whitehead, You can do it! Good luck!
thats great! what kind of brush do you use?
This is terrific, but I don't happen to have a large outdoor, flat, vertical surface at my disposal.
A garage door or fence will work.
I'm in louisiana, may want to get in this business. I know California prices would be different, but what do you charge to clean blinds?
What's the best brush for this?
How does one find a hanging wall such as that? Do you need to construct one out of plywood or similar if there isn’t already one available nearby?
Gopal R
A fence or garage door could work. The rig in this video was built for commercial operation.
What kind of brush are you using as in what type of bristle is safe to not scratch metal blinds? I recently did a blind cleaning and I was told to use a horse hair brush and all that brush did was leave a million horse hairs all through the blind that caused me to go and pick them all out individually. Is it nylon or something else?
Heli PadUSA, I found a brush similar to the one I'm using in the video at Ace hardware in the car care isle next to the car wash solution.. it's made by Victor #05607-8.
Thanks so much for the fast response as I have another mini-blind job this Friday night. I will head there tomorrow.
How much do you charge for this service?
Thanks for the video. I've mostly seen people use tarps as the waterproof backing. What is the large white boards that you use?
Nathan Hill, actually those wash boards are from an experimental portable blind cleaning system I was working on. I built them from 2x2’s and 1/4” plywood with several coats of premium exterior house paint. Any large flat vertical surface should work fine though. I’m not cleaning blinds professional anymore. But, recently I washed some blinds for a friend. I screwed a couple of angle irons to the side of the house...instant blind washing surface. Finding a place to dry them took a little more creativity.
We have plantation blinds that are connected on a top piece about 3xs the length of this one. Way too long! I have no idea how I can mount this monster to clean outside. Any ideas?
I've cleaned blinds as wide as 12 feet. You just need a flat area that is wide enough.
Hi, Your video is great! You didn't mention what you use for the cleaner, can you tell us what soap you used? Thank you for your information in advance. Patricia
I used the Smart and Final brand of Cleaner Degreaser. Any cleaner degreaser will work. I add about 1/3 gal to a five gallon bucket of water. I also add about 1/2 cup of all-in-one car wash/wax by Pro.
This is a great method.
Materials you used to create the vertical white surface? Is that cut into half and bends?
It was a 2-2x2 frames, each covered by a full sheet of 1/4” plywood, primed and painted with high quality exterior gloss house paint. The two panels are hinged together in the middle. When not in use, the whole thing rolls up on top of the van on garage door track and rollers.
Great video, Well done.
WITH ALL OF THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE IN THIS WORLD... Why hasn't someone created a truly agitation free, touchless spray cleaner???
You rock Blindman ! I have the 'old school' type metal blinds with the tape. Can I do the same method
without messing up the tape ?
Thanks for the compliment. You should be able to wash the tapes without a problem. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly.
Hi I’m in Canada. And I clean blinds for business but where do you buy that wall you’re using?
I built it with 2x2s and plywood.
If thread comes out ,how to repair that thread and how to put it back in the panel?
Stay tuned Sunita, I am working on putting together some helpful repair videos. The hardest part about re-cording a blind or shade is having the proper cord. How much do you charge for removing, cleaning and reinstalling a bling like the one in your demo?
Thanks.
I’m not cleaning blinds anymore. When I stopped in 2015, I was charging $15 per standard sized blind.
@@DennisOnMaui Thank you for taking the time to respond. It seemed very labor intensive to me.
I searched "cleaning blinds" because a property owner asked me to clean some very greasy, sticky, discolored blinds and I was quite certain it was going to cost the same or less to just replace the blinds with some lower-end blinds from Home Depot.
Thanks for your instructional video.
Is it better to use brush like you are using or celluos sponge?
Brush for sure.
Does the water warp or damage or weaken the cords in any way?
No
And this is what Kevin Costner does in between acting jobs.
TJ Booker right? Sounds just like him.
This is pretty great. Is this your full time business and would you be interested in teaching your techniques and pricing?
This was my full time business from 1993-2015. I sold it and semi-retired to Maui. What did you have in mind for training?
you are AWESOME!!!
Great video!
Excellent. Thank you!!!
Where did you buy that brush at sir?
I found a brush similar to the one I'm using in the video at Ace hardware in the car care isle next to the car wash solution.. it's made by Victor #05607-8
@@DennisOnMaui Thank you sir much appreciated I will be checking out my local ace hardware store, I have few blinds that need be cleaned I just need to start dusting them on regular bases so I won't have to wash them again.
What!! I watched this whole thing and no idea you were blind.
I cleaned my blinds like this in shower stall.
I want that brush!
toffecrunch, you can find a very similar brush in the auto isle at Ace Hardware..
Will this method affect the strings such as shrinking?
Charles Richards
No, not at all.
denthemen92629 what about putting them in the bathtub to clean?
Charles Richards
Sounds messy. I think my method is much better.
denthemen92629 thank you 😄
Thanks 👌 🎉
Thank you Blindman =)
you should remove wand before cleaning, that way, they can't get broken.
elainieg, please feel free to add any steps you’d like. I’ve been cleaning blinds with this method for over two decades. I learned early on, that just being aware and careful saves a lot of time and is sufficient to avoid the stem of the tilt mechanism from breaking off during cleaning. The wand itself rarely breaks.
For the most part this is a very good video though what kind of soap do you use would dish soap work?
Dish soap is not a good option. It doesn't rise well and leaves a residue and spots. Use car wash/wax solution for the best results.
Thanks 👍
great vid, but please turn your mic up.
Don't bump into it like I did six times!
Good job thank you.............
Where did you find your brush?
I bought a half dozen of them online several years ago. I can't remember the source. I will try to find it in my records for you. Pretty much any soft bristle scrub brush will do. Natural bristles work best.
I found a brush very similar to this one at Ace Hardware in the auto care isle next to the car wash solution that will also work to clean blinds..
Thanks so much for keeping my question on your mind and getting back to me!
why not take the wand off ?
You can if you want. I don’t like to take the time. Easier to just be careful..
This is so Cool. Great Video. How much do you charge per blind and where is your business located? Also, What type of soap are you using? Once again, Great Job!
The business is located in Laguna Niguel California. Please call 949-496-5519 for questions and appointments. Glad you enjoyed the video..
Hope this helps someone. I take it outside and hang it up someway like this guy did and spray 'scrubbing bubbles' on it and after about 3 minutes I spray it off. Then get a 3" to 4" PVC pipe and cut it to length you want and glue and cap one end - stick your blind in there and fill it with bleach and water and lean it up against something for 24 hrs, take it out and rinse. My blinds are white though and not colored.
That might get your blinds clean, but you’ll ruin them in the process using such harsh chemicals. Total overkill. You also probably took several years off the life of those blinds you washed with that method. Plus you wasted a lot of money using bathroom cleaner when a simple degreaser will do. For better results, use car wash/wax solution.
@@DennisOnMaui ive been doing this the same way to the same blinds for almost 20 yrs and they look like new. Thanks for the advise.
@@donutdude6258 Wow! 20 years! You wasted a lot of money on overkill and doing it the hard way. But, you do you brother.
My 30 years of professional blind cleaning experience suggest that people don’t use Scrubbing Bubbles or bleach on their blinds. Diluted Simple Green, 409 or any commercial grade cleaner degreaser will do the trick. Automotive wash/wax solution works the best, because it leaves a nice finish. The main thing is to rinse them thoroughly..
@@donutdude6258 Also, I can wash about ten blinds an hour with my method. Your method sounds like it takes a full 24 hours for just one? 🤷🏻♂️
@@DennisOnMaui you got something stuck way up your a$$ boy, i dont know wtf it is but I was just trying to help some people out. A can of scrubbings bubbles is $4 and and does the whole house. You do you .
I would definitely pay you to come clean my blinds that is an easy even though you make it look so
I’m live on Maui now, so it would be a very expensive trip charge. LOL!
@@DennisOnMaui I’m gonna have to get in the blind cleaning business
You should. It pays really well. Where do you live?
@@DennisOnMaui western part of Nc
In the mountains
Just a suggestion .. take the wand off. Good video tho.
Brush is just an ultra soft car wash brush. You want to always brush or wipe in one direction. Otherwise you are just moving contaminants around and rubbing them in.
Casey Cross, totally unnecessary to brush in only one direction. The dirt comes of best with some agitation. A good rise should send all the dirt and "contaminants" down the drain.
denthemen92629 for people that want to get things clean wipe in one direction. For those that don’t believe next time you take a shit wipe your ass back and forth, and let us know how that works out. Also would be good practice to spend 5 seconds to remove the tilt wand.
If you don't know your ass from a set of Venetian Blinds then I can't help you. This method of cleaning Blinds has served me and my business very well for 24 years. If you do not find this video helpful, please feel free to develop your own method and post your video.

Rivercross Window Cleaning, LOL! My friend Karen always says the same thing. Maybe I should get a Mike Tyson face tattoo..
I have developed a far superior technology called The Blind Robot.
Soon you will be obsolete.. Resistance is futile. Relinquish your list of customers and we shall let you live to tell the tale of The Blind Robot to your kin.
Show respect and bow to your new overlord. Bowww!
If you’re seriously interested, my old customer list from Orange County, CA can be purchased.
blinds are cheap, replace them
Not only is that wasteful and terrible for the environment, if your blinds cost less than cleaning them, they are junk blinds.
This is not useful for wooden venetian blinds.
redrock1963
You are correct. I mention at the beginning that this method is only good for metal or plastic blind that won’t be harmed by water. For wood blinds and shutters I recommend that you hand clean each vain with a product like Murphy’s Oil Soap.
@@DennisOnMaui - Thx. I have just bought a "finger" type of gadget that has removable fluffy microfiber type fingers from eBay.
Those things are great for keeping all types of blinds clean, but will not cut through built up grim like the Oil Soap will. And, it won’t leave them smelling as nice. Another bonus with Murphy’s is that you don’t need to rinse it off. Just wipe each slat clean and let it dry. Then use your new micro duster weekly to keep them clean.
@@DennisOnMaui - Yeah I reckon you're right. In the past I have hung my blinds in the garage from a 2 x 4 that I have attached to my car hoist. - It allows me to raise the hoist up to drop them the entire length. I've then gone over them with compressed air and then a damp rag. I'm in Australia so not sure which product will have the active ingredient of the Murphy’s Oil Soap you mentioned but I'll keep an eye out for it. Cheers.
Sorry mucker you should have unhooked the blind closer before winging it to others...
Wow lmao

How long does it take them dry?
Depends on the weather. But, as long as the water has stopped dripping, you can probably hang them back in the window after about 20 minutes. Just be sure to separate the vanes so that they don’t stick together when they dry. Might need to come by with a rag to wipe the sill after several minutes.
