I really like these longer videos where we follow along as you build. And that you explain when things don't go according to plan. Here in south Norway we are moving into summer properly, I just harvested my first hand full of strawberries out of the garden this year. Somehow they always taste best out of your own garden.
Nothing better than a fresh berry from the patch. I was sorting out old pictures & videos yesterday & saw how many we used to grow. I think I'll be popping a few into this new system now. Cheers & all the best CV.
Hey rob good day man , I just wanted to thank you for putting the uniseal diagram in the description that's the only thing that was hold me back from doing the chop and flip hope everything is well and hopefully you found the dream farm
Howdy. I've learned that using a propane torch to get my plastics tools good and hot created zero chaff. I don't even use saws. Just get a cheap box knife hot and it slices right through it. Give it a shot. You'll be please, I promist.
You can always burn out your pvc fittings with a bit of glue or a heat gun to heat the pipe and a screw driver/ some multigrips to pop out the old pipe.
I heated pipe to remove pipe from fittings (all the valves used were reclaimed that way) in the past. 👍 Not a huge fan of the method as it can release some toxic chemicals into the water if over heated.
@@shamsajmeri8361 Don't want to make it public here so I'll make a members post for you mate. 👍 It's fairly much the same posts as make it to the UA-cam member community but the notifications might come through on time. 😉
One thing i suggest for anyone reading, use pressure glue (green), not because blue is bad or whatever, its great, but i reuse a lot of my fittings elsewhere (as does Bob haha as he is grabbing a lot of these parts from elsewhere/other systems) constantly when i cut em up and mix and match so using pressure glue i can still use these parts for non pressure or pressure regardless of what i am doing. and both glues cost the same so might as well just make it pressure fitted
Good idea NB. The pumps I use are all low pressure so blue works fine. I've seen they use the green on the large fountain jobbies. Cheers mate & have top one.
@@RobsAquaponics i have a mix depending on what i am doing also getting town water from one side of the property to the other and whatever. I used to just use blue too, but then i kept having to store me fittings separately so i was like fk it haha same price might as well make everything pressure then in the future it wont as its all pressure haha
I have seen folks use the waste to charge biochar & a few other folks use washed charcoal as a growing medium. Can't say I've seen it used as a filter medium as of yet.
I've seen folks say that they will be using it but am yet to see a large bed (300L/80gal grow bed) filled with it. Best place to ask would be on one of the forums or social media groups I think. Sorry I'm not much help mate.
23:00 this part at the end should be cut or duplicated and placed at beginning of video. I enjoy your work; just a suggestion to paint image of finished design BEFORE getting into weeds with detailed build!
Cheers for the vid Rob. Great as usual. I’ve just got the ibc fish tank and grow beds plus sump in place at the moment. Need to get the rff and bio filter drums next then into the plumbing so this video is info gold. ❤ I’m on the Northside of Brizzie and wondering if you have any tips on getting your pvc piping for a bargain. I’m trolling marketplace but where would you go if you were buying new? TIA and keep up the good work mate, your an inspiration and my main motivator in setting up my 2nd system😊
I ring around plumbing suppliers & see what price they can do. I think the big "B" store normally has the cheapest. I like to use these guys for the PVC & Polly fittings & valves, irrigationstore.com.au/collections/pvc-pipe-fittings-1 They have a flat shipping fee & the price is WAY LOWER than the "B" store. Hope that helps some mate.
Question: What is your thinking on the barrel versus cone configuration for the radial flow settling tank? Based on the video you linked, the cone shape seems like it would be ideal for removing the solids. Is it a cost issue, convenience, or is there a functionality advantage to the barrel style that I don't understand? I apologize if you have already answered this question before in a different video. I have watched a lot of them. When I lived in Hawaii a few years back I had a great aquaponics system and the community is huge there. I am about to move to a climate which will make starting one up again viable so I am studying up again. I plan on buying your guide once we buy the new house! Thanks for everything and good luck!
Cone based tanks are expensive here & out of the budget of most backyarders I've helped along. I find the flat based drums work OK as long as you can sort out a decent plumbing fitting to draw the waste out. I was gifted a 50gal barrel with a cone welded onto it that I'm wanting to use but due to the height it isn't suitable for the systems I've built here so far. I will be putting it to use on the new farm we're purchasing at the moment though. 🤔😉 I hope the build goes smoothly when the time comes Zombie.!
The solids would get smashed up a fair bit which would make them smaller. Smaller solids generally require a longer retention time to settle out of the water column so that's why I run the setter before. There's nothing stopping you from running a fines filter after the bio if you're concerned about the small amount of particulate that gets through.👍
The Bio media is constantly churning which helps to keep it clean. 👍 Solids are also created by the bacteria which a lot of people don't take into account. Hope that helps

The longer explainer video are awesome for these types of "put together" tutorials.
Thanks Eleni. Hope to have the soil beds sorted this week & may get a video out on them this weekend. 🫰

Hi Rob, i allways glue my outside fittings, if they need to be reused i just cut them shorter.
That's one way to go. 👍 I find the tape & screw works well too (if you pay attention to what you're doing😉)
Hope all's well with you folks down south.
Great work Rob

Love this! Thanks for showing this process!!!
Thanks Sally. 😁 It's great to be creating again. Hope to have the soil beds connected by the weekend.

Have you ever used biochar as a filtration medium? I wonder if you could filter waste water and charge the biochar at the same time.

How do those uniseals work? Didn't see how they get the pipes stuck firmly to both sides of the container.
The pipes expand the rubber to create a seal against the tank wall.
Sir can you give the diagram the flow of the water how the function. Thank you very much and God bless.

What would be the difference if you have the media filter before the settler tank?
The solids would get smashed up a fair bit which would make them smaller. Smaller solids generally require a longer retention time to settle out of the water column so that's why I run the setter before.
There's nothing stopping you from running a fines filter after the bio if you're concerned about the small amount of particulate that gets through.👍
Just wondering if you dont use PVC glue because of the potential for toxicity??
It's easier to reclaim fittings using the screws + not all fittings need to be secure, like the up flow pipe in the solids settler.
Cheers Jacob.
Hi Rob, Pete here from Gorman,Texas in aquaponics is it possible to use 3 inch pipe and gutter applications in aquaponic.
Also, thank you again for all the work you do help newbie building and designing
You can use it in a few different applications in aquaponics Pete. Are you wanting to use it as a drain pipe or grow tube/channel?
Why would u put the bio before the refine filter ?... when stuff go to the bio does it not get the bio gunky?
The Bio media is constantly churning which helps to keep it clean. 👍
Solids are also created by the bacteria which a lot of people don't take into account. Hope that helps
Are those blue barrel 30 or 55 gal?
55gal / 200 litres. 👍
👍
👍👍
magresign kaya?
that translated to "So resign?" Not sure what you meant sorry.
Video would greatly improve if you prefaced the design with planned pipe routing rather than viewer guessing throughout entire video to end
This isn't really a how to but a vlog. I have more detailed videos on the filters if you want to suss them out.

🤣 The throne is next to the shower & the crown is probably at the bottom of one of the totes filled with used plumbing fittings.
