The Great Battle for Moscow 1941-1942 | Guderian's Decisive Operation Typhoon

  • At the end of September 1941, the Germans had already been campaigning in the Soviet Union for three months, and it was then that they faced their definitive operation on Moscow, known as Operation Typhoon. In this final assault on the Soviet capital, the Germans played the entire campaign. If they manage to capture the Soviet capital, they may well be able to defeat Stalin and end the war. If they fail, I know they will be left in a very vulnerable situation in the dead of winter, and will give the Soviets oxygen until the following summer. In this program we are going to see the entire development of the German offensive, and the subsequent counterattack of the Red Army.

Make no mistake. Geographically Russia was carried to victory by the West. Strategically Russia was the biggest loser and n WWII. Russia suffered more military deaths than all the Western Allies and all the Axis Nations combined. They have never recovered.

German Field Martial Wilhelm Keitel said that when German forces failed to capture Moscow and suffered their first catastrophic defeat at the gates of Moscow by the hands of Siberian divisions of Russian Army 🪖🎖️ he knows in his heart 💜❤️ secretly that the War is lost for Germany in late 1941 and early 1942 itself because Germany lost the initiative at the Eastern front at the gates of Moscow with that defeat, shortly after expressing this thoughts Wilhelm Keitel was hanged by Anglo Americans to please Man of Steel whom History known as Joseph Stalin.

I read his memoirs. Definitely have mixed feelings with keitel. I think ultimately he deserved death. Him and jodl. He was what is equivalent to the chief of staff for the wehrmacht. He was a yes man and from his contemporary generals not deserved of the title general field Marshall. Probably never should been above the rank of a one star General. I believe he said he was his happiest at that rank. But that may just be because the life he was living at that time. If he knew the war was lost(I've also heard) then he should of resigned his commission rather than to issue orders that would ultimately ruin his country. Oh, and I like the part in the movie nuremburg where the us colonel rips off keitel"s shoulder boards after keitel says he was a soldier and just following orders. The colonel says, "there, now you are no longer a soldier, you are a war criminal".

The big decision of whether to make that last effort to take Moscow before winter set in, was opposed by many German generals who wanted the army to recuperate in towns along the river...Runstedt went so far as to suggest the German army should retreat back to the Polish border, as he always found the invasion far too dangerous given Germany's limited resources.

As with Gederian's memoirs, you gloss over the disaster he suffered at Mtsensk. On 4 October 1941, the 4th Panzer Division, part of Guderian's 2nd Panzer Group, was pretty well wiped out in a few hours at Mtsensk. Colonel Mikhail Yefimovich Katukov achieved the first major victory of the Soviet armored forces against the Germans. Barely rates a sentence in Guderian's copious memoirs.

100% true! I agree! That was the only way to fix that mass colled Barbarossa. Because, If they doing that what you said, and put Gothard Heinrici to be the only comander of eastern front, in spring 1942 will be diferent like was in real ww2 on this year. Also, after October, 1941, Hitler must send winter equipment for the german army. Without that winter war ( 1941/1942 ) was masohistic for Wehrmacht. But, Hitler didnt understood that. He just insist keep the front, but on wrong way. In winter 1941/1942 can be much better situation for german army and options for continue the war in 1942.

One anecdotal story about all this concerns the German decision as to what to do after completing encirclement battles southwest of Moscow; A) continue onward and try to take the capital or B) forget about anymore fighting for that year and instead see to the troops being well housed for the winter. Von Rundstead was supposed to have suggested the Germans retreat all the way back to the Polish border....always against the invasion, I guess he thought a peace treaty could be negotiated, in Germany's favor, since up to this time the German army seemed invincible.

I find the Battle of Moscow more pivotal and important than either Stalingrad or Kursk.. Wehrmacht lost around 100 000 soldiers in Stalingrad, and less in Kursk. But it was 1943 and USSR was much stronger after getting all those trucks and Jeeps from Uncle Sam while Germany was ravaged by Hitler's bad decisions.. But again, if Hitler didn't split his Armies and halted the attack on Moscow in October 1941, Guderian would probably enter the city..
Also if I ever hear people calling Rommel "One of the greatest German generals of WW2" I will start slapping people around.. Guderian, Hopner, Rundstedt, Von Bock, Von Menistein, all giants of the Eastern Front while Rommel had some success in France, was humiliated in Africa and then went to his wife's birthday on D-Day while being a overall commander of the Western Front (under Rundstead). Pathetic.

He failed to accomplish any of his objectives. Paid for it with his life!🤔

My opinion: Germany in that time got mighty Wehrmacht and the best generals and feldmarschalls in the world. Similar like Napoleon in 1812. But, except that, Germany , in 1941, got two problems - fuel and one genial leader for millitary and strategic blunders - Adolf Hitler. Before invasion of the USSR, Hitler was doing one tactical blunder ( 1940, Dunkirk ) and one strategic ( 1940, Battle for Britain ). In 1941, strategic blunders was two, Barbarossa and declaring war to USA. But, even Barbarossa was started, even on that front, Hitler was doing another 3 tactical blunders. First, Wehrmacht must taking Leningrad, in August 1941. Second, Moscow must be taking first, in September, 1941. Third, attack on Kiev must be delayed to spring 1942. Because, after taking Moscow, war will not be over, but fall of bolshevic metropolis that will be enormous blow for soviet moral and slap for Stalin. PS: before 129 years ( from 1941 ) Napoleon was doing same strategic blunder when he was attack Russia. He didnt understood too that Russia is enormuos and giant land with stuborn leaders and fine generals. And of course, very cold winters. But, how I said, Napoleon was a millitary genious. And, Hitler was only genious for blunders. All Barbarossa was one giant madness and nobody cant fix that. Even Model, Guderian, Von Manstein, von Paulus, Halder or Rundstedt. Nobody was win Adolf Hitler in war 1939 to 1945. Hitler got personal responsability for german total defeat in ww2. And Germans were wrong when they elected Fuhrera for first man in Germany, in free and democratic elections, in 1932 and 1933.

Hitler must just listen own generals, not doing a amateur blunders near Moscow. He instinctively understood he was in the same position, like Napoleon in 1812 in Russia, but he didnt knowed what he must doing. He never studied in millitary academy. He was just corporal with Iron Cross and he knowed be only a brave man in action. But, this wasnt inaf for that complicated situation. Guderian and Heinrici were the only two mans who understood situation and they knowed what must do. But, it was too late for that, because Hitler didnt wanted listen a reason and experience generals. And there was good old and artic russian winter, and Wehrmacht gots just summer clouthing. PS: Reallity is that Stalin never flee Moscow. Plan was open, like B solution, but was never needed. And when I said that Stalin flee from Moscow 100% if that was neccessery, I was thinking that Stalin was a practical man, not like Hitler. Because, If Moscow really fall in september or october, 1941, that not mean the end of the german-soviet war. The same is, in alternative option, with Hitler. If he flee from Berlin to Austria ( Berchtesgaden ) at the end of april, 1945, the war will continuing. Proof can be Napoleon case. He was taking Moscow in october, 1812, but russian car said big NO to the peace. So, Napoleon was in trouble. Any way, if you read my comments on this channel, you will see that I think Barbarossa was a Hitler madness and one of the greatest blunders of ww2. Completely wrong. The Germans had about 1.9 million troops in Army Group Center, but only a small portion of these took part in the battle. We have no idea what the Soviet figures were, but certainly a lot higher than your 800k, since around 600k were encircled at Bryansk and Vyazma alone. Also, the Soviets had way more tanks than that. They lost over a thousand tanks in the first stage of the offensive alone. They got over 20 fresh, well trained and equipped divisions from the far east that went up against dilapidated, poorly supplied and worn out German advance units that didn't even have air cover.

Is hard to imagine that german lost because of lack of clothes. Who could have imagined this? The whole Europe couldn't provide winter clothes/uniforms for the soldiers. Shortage of wool? Sewing machines? Women to do the job? What the shit had happened? Or they didn't find the proper design/designer for the uniforms? And what is tragic they did the same mistake twice, the second year too. No more wool, fabric in the Reich? Probably 5% of Romania's production of wool was enough to dress all the wehrmacht in comfortable winter clothes. But that didn't happened

    • @davidjackson2179
      @davidjackson2179 Рік тому

They didn’t lose because a lack of clothes. They never had a real chance of winning. They lacked clothing, tanks, planes, fuel, soldiers, trucks damn near everything. And the Soviets would have never given up and had more armies in reserve.

@@davidjackson2179 Winter destroyed half of the men and broke their morale. Is a fact. They went to war without winter clothes and enough fuel. That was High Command negligence. I guess Goering made some comment that german soldiers can fight in short trousers no problem. They took the lack of uniforms very lightly which was catastrophic in the development of the war. The only choice for the german army to win was to make clothes from hunted animals skins from the nearby forests and farms but they didn't. Just because they were too proud to put their iron crosses and medals on a dead sheep skin. So they stayed in the summer uniforms and died. They had the winter uniforms of all Europe's armies french, greece, dutch, norway, polish, czech, austrian etc. Too proud to wear them. Were't designed by Hugo Boss to be stylish enough and approved by the party. I guess the reason they lost the war esentially was that Hugo Boss took a vacation in that period and wasn't seen for 2 years.

@@MrBassmann15US couldn't. This is the very same misinformation that got the Germans overconfident after they saw how the Soviets performed against the Finns during the winter war. Russia adapts very very quickly, they always seem to fight very very wrong using tactics that make no sense until that wrong fighting turns to right fighting... this has always been the case with Russian army.
Any invasion by the west would fail and the pressure and losses by western countries would lead many individual governments to collapse. The adaptation of the Russians can be seen how different they are fighting now vs early in the war. Unknown to many, the entire Russian army structure has be reorganized from BTGs to regular division structures and brigades.

The thing is, taking Moscow would not of won the war. Hitlers decision to forgo an attack toward Moscow after taking Smolensk was really dumb. But Germany's only hope of winning, was to go on a total war footing in spring of 1941. Trying to win on the cheap was his big mistake.
