Gearbox mounted between the engine and rear axle, rather than behind the engine. Unfortunately the 721X had terrible handling, ranging from complete understeer to acute oversteer. After three Grands Prix (Spain, Belgium and Monaco) with poor results, the 721X was replaced by the more conventional 721G.

Interesting, because the weight distribution had to be better.
More weight between the axles, less weight behind the rear axle.

Apparently the 721X was meant to use a specific Goodyear tyre, which was unavailable, hence the poor steering
