  • On day four of our Japan excursion, we took a train an hour southeast towards Nara - a city halfway between Kyoto and Osaka filled to the brim with quirky whereabouts and serene temples, with domesticated deer scattered throughout, munching on locally made deer snacks. The incredible, awe-inspiring Tōdai-ji temple - the world's largest wooden building - can be found on the edge of the city, in the middle of the beautiful Nara park complex. Afterwards we returned to Kyoto to see more sights - including the Fushimi Inari shrine with pathways made of thousands of Torii gates, and finally the imposing Kyoto imperial palace, fought over for hundreds of years as the capital of Japan. We culminated our day with a sleepy Shinkansen ride back to our Tokyo hotel, getting a glimpse of beautiful Nagoya.
