  • It's with great sadness to share the news that FSV51 died around 12:05 pm Sunday afternoon. Disclaimer: this video does show the eaglet dying.
FSV49 & FSV50 had crawled out of the nest bowl when Mom showed up to feed Dad's rabbit to them. FSV51 was trying to follow them. Ma did offer a bite of food to the eaglet but when it wasn't accepted right away, she turned back to the other two eaglets. The eaglet fell over onto his back and appeared to be struggling to get up. Unfortunately, after about six to seven minutes, the eaglet stopped breathing. I wonder if he had a heat stroke. I think the nest area was over 80 degrees today. It was very sunny. He was uncovered for a long time. I zoomed in after he fell. It looked like a seizure, possibly. This is all speculation, of course. The rabbit was the first meal of the day, so the eaglets had not eaten since Saturday evening. FSV51 was one day old, a little over 24 hours since hatch. The fact that all three eggs were viable and hatched is amazing. It's always sad to lose one. I don't think the odds were good for him to survive with two larger siblings getting all the food. Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
***In case you missed it on Facebook, Mom's ankle band numbers were sent off to USGS. Mom was banded in Colorado in May 15, 2002. she is 22 years old! She has hatched 36 eaglets. **
    Thanks for watching!

What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSV-N0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSV-N0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later.

It is so sad. I also thought it looked like a seizure. It was around 70-80F and the cottonwood trees have not leafed out yet, so no shade. It the past two years the third egg was not viable, and the year before, one egg cracked from falling ice. So, only two have hatched each of the past 3 years and 1 has died each year. So, I really hope 49 and 51 make it to fledge! It is a huge nest and I have felt bad for the lonely eaglet.

I’m afraid to know the answer but what happened to the dead eaglet afterwards? Was she eaten by the parents?

It's rough out there. I've seen some crazy things in my years of nest watching, and bird videos.
Was this the newest hatched? I noticed in another video, where they were being fed, he couldn't move well enough to compete and get a bite.
They get their hydration from food too. He looks like he's gasping, poor ting.

He did seem weak and I was pleasantly surprised he was still alive first thing Sunday morning. I was hopeful. So sad.

Oh no 😢😢😢 Is there some reason the mom doesn’t help the poor little thing?

I believe she was so focused on the other two that she neglected the little one. She had her back to F51. The parents are focused on the fittest.

I missed the whole thing. The night before I noticed it wasn't taking food. But what and what time did it happen?
