      Obviously, but I mean. It's enclosed in a plastic container under a pile of things over it-- that is all enclosed in a taped-up box. So, how is it able to breathe if the circulation is cut off?

    Am I the only one who see's the potential danger of shipping an animal in a box?? And as if that wasn't bad enough, they have to put all of this shit on top of it instead of putting the turtle in a separate box.

    • @happygillmore8210
      @happygillmore8210 9 років тому +23

      No, when done correctly the shipping process is not dangerous at all. All the pet stores get their animals well, though shipping! The shipping process start to finish is only about 18-24 hours long sometimes even sooner. The animal is put in with a heat pack for obvious reasons. Like I said in the beginning when done correctly shipping is a great way to get your animals!

    • @97GoldDust
      @97GoldDust 9 років тому +12

      Happy Gillmore you,sir, are completely oblivious to the dangers of this kind of shipping. I once had a fedex guy threw a box with a GAMING GRAPHICS CARD in the box instead of walking to my doorstep. That was a fuck graphics card and that guy didn't even care. What makes you think that this package is any different to those lazy fedex guys?

    I can understand shipping animals in boxes. I can also understand that majority of these animals are shipped safely, with the correct animal shipping couriers. What I cannot understand is how they think it's acceptable to ship not only an animal in a plastic container, but put all it's equipment on top of it. The way they've shipped that beautiful creature is the same process they use to ship games consoles, they deserve a little more kindness than that.

    • @lowerschooldanceclubs5342
      @lowerschooldanceclubs5342 9 років тому +1

      I'm not trying to cause arguments either, I just think if you're going to ship your animals, then put a nice big FRAGILE on the box, and ship the equipment separately.

      They put breathing holes in the cup that it was in.. The Styrofoam around the walls of the box keeps it insulated at the right temperature the tortoise itself doesn't breath as much as humans so it can chill in there.. And I heard that they usually ship them during the tortoises sleeping time so it falls asleep and teleports

    FFS if you people in the comments don't no a single thing about tortoise/reptile biology and anatomy, don't go crying animal cruelty.
    Now let me make this perfectly clear, reptiles like cold, dark and damp places.
    Reptiles are almost always calm, that's why they have a much more controlled breathing than mammals and consume less oxygen.
    Due the size of the tortoise, it consumes a VERY tiny amount of oxygen and therefore it not only survived, but thrived throughout the entire journey.

      You obviously don't know much about tortoises because if you did, you would know there not supposed to be kept in damp conditions as it can cause shell rot. And reptiles like the warmth because they are cold blooded, this means they cannot heat up by themselves they need an external source of heat, e.g. The sun. Hence they like bright warm conditions. You idiot!

    • @acejohnson4665

      Allison Faith It's not cruel. How else would they get shipped, anyhow? And the smallness protects the pet, and cushions it if it happened to jerk around.

      Allison Faith Well, trust me, many companies love the little guys, and try to make them safe and comfy. See the paper? That's for the turtle in case he gets flipped over, it'll be easier to right himself.

    • @ChildOfAshes1
      @ChildOfAshes1 9 років тому +1

      I have to agree though. I don't care for the package and shipping animals like they are an Amazon parcel. People can Say what they will to defend it, but it doesn't sit right with me either. Mail can get lost, handled roughly, turned upside down, and it doesn't have any ventilation. I wouldn't get my pet this way either.

    • @vizz3x30
      @vizz3x30 6 років тому +1

      it's okay, it takes max 2 days. if it is stressed from trip, amount of stress is minimal, far less that they experience in wild life. and it will be quickly forgotten after receiving salad or lettuce from owner.
      it can absorb some water from around so it's always hydrated, heating bag provides heat during trip, and low oxygen intake and dark place makes them feel safe. ,So you can now be relaxed about turtles being shipped.
      We humans sometimes have trouble understanding, some animals are different than us and feel things differently. For instance shipping little cat that way would kill it. And fish would die because no water.

  • @Chiefstep
    @Chiefstep 9 років тому +13

    I love the tortoise and I'm sure you'll take great care of him/her, but I do wish these turtle breeders wouldn't ship them in dark, sealed containers as if they're objects. There has to be a better way.

    • @MrUromastyxdude
      @MrUromastyxdude 9 років тому +1

      The container isn't sealed. There really isn't a better way, and they're not in there long. Shipping sucks, everyone who keeps them thinks so, but it's really not that hard on the animal.

    • @Chiefstep
      @Chiefstep 9 років тому

      I understand what you're saying, but you really can't say it's not that hard on the animal. I'm sure the poor thing is terrified. That's the point.

    • @MrUromastyxdude
      @MrUromastyxdude 9 років тому

      They go through worse in the wild. Even zoos ship animals, its how it has to be.

    • @Chiefstep
      @Chiefstep 9 років тому

      Worse in the wild? No no no. There will be predators for many animals, yes, but the animals live in natural environments that they understand. They eat, they drink, they live. In captivity, they are not free to do as they please. They may be free of predators, but would you rather live in a jail cell with steady meals and safety, or out free to do as you please with possibilities of danger? The same applies to animals.

    • @MrUromastyxdude
      @MrUromastyxdude 9 років тому +2

      Who said anything about a jail cell? Every one of my animals has a naturalistic setup with a lot of room. And no, it is not the same as humans. That's called anthropomorphism. Look it up. Don't get me wrong, I love animals. But they (in general) have just as happy of lives in captivity. If you want to go on comparing animals to humans, liken the shipping process to a person in an airplane.

    I 've got 25 like this one in a special enclosure in the garden of my country house in Greece. Five adult turtles... the four of them females layed lots of eggs last year. They have layed just as many this year too. The little turtles will take about five years to reach the size that would allow them chances to survive in the wild. Then I guess we will have to let them loose in the forest, or there will be no room for us to walk in the yard !

    just going to list out a few things for the scrubs who don't seem to understand how animal shipping works.
    firstly the animal is always and will always be shipped in less than 24hours not matter how far its their damn job to get the animal to its destination fast and safe to reduce stress.
    secondly as a standard rule the animals should be boxed due to the fact that if they are constantly seeing their environment changing and seeing too many people and lots of noise then yes they will be stressed out ( sorry you plebs who think that since its in a box its cruel this is done for its own good and to prevent the animals from dying on the way due to said stress).
    thirdly I'm not sure as to how far away he got that package from but most if not all have air holes in them (mine did when I got my geckos) but they also have to come with a label declaring there is a live animal inside and that it should then be their priority to treat it with care.
    and lastly as someone who is trained to work with animals and has done so for some years I can say this with certainty that the animal you saw there was just in a state of confusion and slight distress ( he shouldn't have picked it up right away and kinda should have left it to adjust from within it plastic tub of course with lid off and put in the tank).
    Ps: if you ever buy reptiles again make sure you set the temp/humidity of enclosure before you get it in your home so then makes it easier for the animal to adjust and makes it far more comfortable for them as then you will find they will be running around and exploring more during the early period after they are put in there.

    I got a turtle in the mail, same container and little wet paper towel with it. They over night it so it isn't in there for too very long, and chances are the breeding place is probably a more stressful home than staying in a little bowl over night. We got our baby mud turtle like that from backwater reptiles and he was totally fine, now he's almost all grown up. There was nowhere around here that we could have got one so we had to order it. Our box also had a sign on it that said live animal inside.

    This whole video was tuff for me to watch. first an innocent animal was shipped in a small plastic container for who knows how long. anything could've happened. I didn't even see the word fragile on the box. I completely disagree with tortoises being shipped.Then he put the little tortoise in a vivarium,the worst place for a tortoise to live. There's no cool spot for him, it's all hot. also no substrate at all. Very tough to watch. the only positive was that the tortoise couldn't see out of the vivarium, but it shouldn't be in there in the first place.

    • @RealDragonPhenomenon
      @RealDragonPhenomenon 9 років тому +32

      actually from what i saw, the terrarium was pretty well prepared for the tortoise, and anyways, you cant put it anywhere else man. where did you want him to put it, directly on the floor? with that small size that would be dangerous for it, and it does need his special lighting and temperature he can only get in the terrarium. and there is a cool spot for him in there. under that cave rock, you can see its opening is good enough for him to fit inside. and about the "substrate", ok, in my opinion its better to have one, like i have the best i could find for my iguana, but for a baby tortoise its not somethings he needs right away, and if he wants a soft place to lay down he has it at the right side of the tank where there are these moist pieces of wood. now, your talking about the shipping where he is inside a "small plastic container". for me, what i dont understand is how the reptiles can breathe in there, but still, this is the official way all reptiles are shipped so i guess it has enough oxygen to live, and you also said "who knows for how long", this is wrong because if you check every online shop that sends you reptiles, it says they prepare it for shipping in the same day you place the order, and they also guarantee it will come alive. and if you see, when you place an order, if your house is not close to where the shop is they are not gonna send it, so its not like it ships from the other side of the planet or anything. im sure the tortoise is fine, dont overreact

    What I did was I filled a large rubbermaid container with a 50/50 mixture of play-sand and peat moss. The fact that it has no windows provides a nice, stress-free habitat for my little buddy. I read up on keeping Russian Tortoises and found that if they can see out of their enclosure, then they may feel more stressed because they have to find a place to hide. The sand allows my tortoise to burrow when he feels like it, and I put sphagnum moss in one of his hides so he feels more secure.

      Animals have emotions, but they are not human like, in they case that they will start bouncing a fucking ball because they are bored, you're missing the point

    what the hell you can just package animals what if it runs out of air what if it over heat whats if it gets sent to the wrong place and someone dosent know there a turtle in there and they send it to the post office and it dis from no food and water

      if it is to hot they put a cold pack and they are in hibernation and it usually just last less then a day and it also gets sent to your house and it is usually better then getting one from the pet store

      SuperLastMohican How about posing a legitimate counter-argument, rather than just calling he obscenities? I agree with her. Living things should not be in sealed containers.

      CodyBaldauf That simply isn't feasible. It would roll in the tank and die. In the box it's cushioned and kept warm. You do realize this species burrows in the wild, in basically the same conditions as this?
