- GREATEST ANNOUNCEMENT EVER! Dodonpachi DaiOuJou M2 ShotTriggers Port PS4 Reaction Video! Coming 2023. Finally, M2 has come to their senses and the ShotTriggers team is working on the beloved Shoot Em' Up masterpiece, Dodonpachi DaiOuJou (aka Blissful Death) and will be releasing the port on PS4. In my opinion, DOJ is the greatest shmup of all time and the fact that the team behind the greatest ports of all time, Ketsui Deathtiny and Battle Garegga Rev. 2016, are working on it makes me a very happy boy. In this video I give my reaction to the trailer and explain why the previous ports of DOJ Black Label, especially the Xbox 360 port, are lacking and why this new port pushes the PS4 into being the greatest shmup console of all time.

As someone who can only shmup on Novice modes, I'm a little sad about the naming of Super Easy mode and what it might mean. Obviously any easier mode is going to not matter to a real shmupper's skill, but "Super Easy," makes me feel like it will be one even I can clear on my first or second go, like DFK or Espgaluda 2, and not something that's a bit crunchy, like Mushi's Novice modes.
Machine translation is getting pretty good, almost making knowing Japanese obsolete lol. A couple minor quibbles: it's really saying "includes super easy mode that anyone can clear" and "of course, contains M2 gadgets to help clear the game and arcade challenges [implies there are other features like this but does not list them]." The sc looking text says "now comparing..." etc but that doesn't really change the point.

My daughter, who is 8, loves to watch me play shmups, but they're too hard for her. She really likes the Super Easy modes on the M2 ShotTriggers releases because it lets her play the same game as dad
Awww, that's so sweet! ❤️ I love how M2's releases make it clear that shmups can be hard if you play them seriously, yes, but that in the end, they're for everyone to enjoy!

That is a fun use ha. But I still maintain that super easy is much too easy. I bet it won't take your daughter long to beat it, then the divide between it and arcade is very massive. A tougher easy mode would be much better in the long run
@RNG Gamer: Agreed. How does the community expect the genre to grow if all the games are inaccessible unless you're an teen/adult or a savant? Imagine the genre in ten years if kids cut their teeth on shmups when they're 5, 6, 7...? Also, the genre is so daunting to those teens/adults who have never really played shmups. Easy mode is a great utility. I love this channel but his comments about easy modes being a waste of time are pretty myopic - sorry for the criticism!
@@esperago I love this channel too, and I feel like your comment about being myopic is well warranted. A lot of people, including myself, look at a game and feel that it has a fair or balanced difficulty, only to then see someone struggle with it immensely. One tends to forget that the average lay-person can't even beat the first level of Super Mario Bros. on their first try.
My daughter has difficulty holding a cup full of milk without spilling it, so asking her to grind out a shmup without an easy mode is a big ask. It is easy to forget the lack of fine motor skills that children possess.

Super exciting news indeed! On another note, hearing you talk about m2 ports here made me think about something, would you be willing to do a video with a top 10 or something best shmups ports on modern plataforms? Between Ps4/Ps5, Xone/Series and Switch (if any)? So someone like me that loves shmups but been out of the loop can have a quick guide of what ports to seek for my current consoles!

That would be really cool! I don't know if the Dreamcast has enough power to handle the port though, since they use some pretty heavy duty emulation

I doubt they've forgotten...they will do it if they can (fingers crossed). I know the PS versions are usually a little better, but I like my switch for arcade style action and would prefer to have all my shooters in one place.

First, merrx xmas! But you almost got me angry there, Mark. No body gives a shit about super easy mode? Oh, come on man. Not everybody is that good at shmups. I could only play Ketsui and Garegga thanks to this mode. Without this mode, bullet hell shmups would be even more niche then they already are.
Merry Xmas! What I meant about super easy (and I think I clarified what it meant) is that super easy mode is actually too easy and even new players don't like it. There are much better versions of novice modes (like in crimzon clover and gunvein) that are more compelling. I think the super easy modes are the weakest aspects of their releases. Honestly changing settings in custom mode is a better easy mode

That's why I love M2 joints. They cater to all skill levels. Ketsui's arrange mode is a godsend for a scrub like me and Esp Ra. De.'s custom mode allows me to tailor the game's difficulty to something resembling a "novice" setting.
The power of save states my friend, plus the custom mode can add in a lot of cool stuff! I d love to see a custom mode autobomb feature for new players

Good video. I know Switch has more lag but kinda wish it had a version. Also liveWire seems to do a pretty decent job of their ports. Above and beyond city connection at least.
Yeah a switch version would be cool too for handheld :-) also yeah livewire are solid, def better than city connection, but they just cannot match the power of m2 shottriggers, their ports are works of art

This and Espaluda's perfect arcade ports already exist on PS2. These excellent 1:1 arcade ports even support 240p and TATE modes. Why do we need multiple perfect arcade ports? They already exist and easily accessible. They should do other shooters that until now do not have decent ports.
Some worthy titles would be Ibara, Ibara Pink Sweets, Raiden Fighters Collection (Xbox version is not arcade perfect and the JP version is not accessible to everyone), Viper Phase 1, Soukyugurentai, Zanac Neo (a very good game but the PS1 version has too much slowdown in 2P mode), Kingdom Grandprix, etc.
as someone who is around as old as the ps2, it's not exactly an accessible option for me
i'd have to buy a ps2 (either with modchip or a power supply adapter) in the first place, on top of the game being expensive
then i'd have to find a monitor to plug it into, cause the only things with analog inputs i have are massive tvs
and after all that i'd have a console i probably will only ever use for like 3 games, a lot more stuff to organize and several hundred spent

I talk about it in the vid but the PS2 port is massively incomplete, there is no black label. The main version of the game is black label, and the 360 port is crappy. So this port is absolutely needed.

This announcement got me mad hyped. One of my favorites alongside Ketsui. The fact that M2 is making it is reason to party. Shame that other platforms might not be getting it but my PS5 is ready.
Yeah I m totally fine with it being on the PS4. PC version would be cool but the PS4 version performs rock solid so there s no drawback to it really I don't think. And at this point they have made enough of a reason to own a PS4 just for their games

Looking forward to it a lot as well. Though I do think they should keep adding the super simple modes. I truly believe this is an awesome feature for people new to the shmup, and the ones who still suck at them after years of playing, but still enjoy the easy modes like myself 😉
I like the concept of easy modes for new players as well, I just think m2 make their super easy mode too easy

This will be an insta-buy on the ps4.The hård drive has plenty of room as it's basically just an M2/ACA machine! I thought I was nuts when I bought it just for that, but I don't regret it one bit.

i ordered Ketsui Deathtiny and Esp RaDe after watching several of your videos (especially your Cave games ranking), i was expecting great games and i was surprised that the experience was even better than what i thought it would be (despite the Japanese only texts); Hence my disappointment that some recent Nintendo Switch releases haven't been ported on the PS4....(yet ? 🤞).
For sure, M2 have done amazing work, so i trust them to release an other great port 🙌
How the hell did I miss this announcement!? I swear, whenever I start forgetting about the ShotTriggers series, they announce something new. Fantastic choice for their next port - my personal dream would still be a port of Ibara Kuro, but there's a reason DOJ has its legendary reputation for sure.
I'm irritated because they won't make a black extra for PlayStation 4 it's only on Xbox 360 and the only way you can play that is if you have a Japanese Xbox 360 system it's irritating they need to make a RK port for PlayStation 4 and 5🎮🕹😀👍🏾

Without PC ports I'm a little disappointed with M2. Give it another 10 years and this stuff might not play on modern consoles, licences might expire etc. If we're getting serious about keeping these games around, a native PC port is crucial

The PS2 port is called White Label, that port has also a gamemode called Death Label, which is the bosses, but way harder, aaaaand has a Double Hibachi at the end (literally, 2 Hibachis)

I give a shit about Super Easy mode, man. I really like M2 Shottriggers's Super Easy modes because it enables me to actually play the games that I've bought. Whether I just suck at shmups or whatever (my biggest accomplishment so far is clearing Tengai on difficulty level 2 with every character on the Steam port; admittedly a fairly modest achievement), these games are just so inaccessible without modes like this to get newbs into the game.
I personally would not have been able to get into ESP.RA.DE or Tiger-Heli without those modes to ease me in. And my wife wouldn't even play these games with me without Super Easy.
And it's weird that you contradict yourself on this point, when I've heard you praise these modes in your podcasts with other shmup players.
I clarified this point in the vid though, where I feel the super easy modes are too easy and not very good novice modes, in comparison to the novice mode of ccwe and gunvein which help teach the player the fundimentals and pose a challenge. The super easy modes of the m2 ports are so lenient that you can clear them without even trying.

All the cave shot triggers ports so far were given some sorta subtitle named after the new arrange mode (Ketsui Deathtiny, ESPrade Psi) so it's safe to assume the full name, additional modes, arranges and etc will all be revealed some point next year

Amazing news ofc. But a shame that I don't own a ps4, those things are being sold for the very least R$2000 when in good condition.

Any console or game you buy here is a bit over 5x more expensive than the original price because $1 = R$5,17
The minimum wage (monthly) here is R$1,212 while in the US is $1,160 (wich translates into R$ 5,992). So basically, just to buy a PS4 in good condition I'd have to spend nearly 2 months of minimum wage...and that's not even counting the game price wich will probably be pretty high ;-;

Legit your "Top 30 Shmups of All Time" video randomly stumbling into my UA-cam recommendations one day is what got me back into shmups; I haven't touched the genre since the Mega Drive before then. And DOJ being at the top of that list always was a sore spot for me, since Garrega and Ketsui had modern versions I could play, but not DOJ.....until now!! Even though I know I'm never gonna be good enough to clear it, I'm excited as hell to get my hands on this. PS - Happy holidays my dude!

Amazing. I will be pre-ordering as well. I have this on PS2 and 360 but I've never played 360 since it's region locked. I'm a huge shmup fan but newer to the genre. I'm really not all that good and I like their super easy modes! I always start with them and can usually get a no death clear using auto bomb, then I move up from there. Or with the Toaplan games I usually just stick with super easy since the auto bomb pretty much negates the check point system. Super easy opens the games up to a much larger audience.

While it is interesting too see a DaiOuJou port, i caný understand why they don´t publish in modern consoles. DaiOuJou is a game that i have mixed feelings. I don´t know if it emulation issues related mame. The game has interesting bullet patterns and slightly different than the traditional cave game , but is hard as ******, bullets are quite fast for a bullet hell and i can´t see slowdown. The initial stages are tons of fun for me (and some of the best i played in a cave game), but then things get impossible and i quit. About games difficulty in general, I do understand that easy modes destroy the quality of the games but I think they are necessary. obviously not all the gamers have the same skills. easy modes should not be available instantly, they should be unlockable after a few failed games attemps. Making a game not acessible for all gamers is kind of elitist and kills even more the genre. Also as longer i get old i tend to lose reflexes.
My point is not that easy modes in general are lame, my point is that the super easy modes in shottriggers ports are specifically bad. They are just way way to easy, a brand new player can clear them in the first try without much effort. As I mentioned in the vid the novice modes of gunvein and ccwe are much better.

Because I don't buy into the idea that all UA-cam vids need to be dead on pov, talking right at the camera is intimate AF, just imagine I have a co host off camera I m talking to.

New fan of your channel here. I'm contemplating taking on DOJ as my next project in terms of modding in some fanmade achievements and leaderboards.
Arcade shmups are probably the most neglected genre in the retro achievement hunting/modding community, and I'm doing what little I can to help turn that tide.
By the way, would you be interested in giving feedback/suggestions on my design before anything goes live? It's to help make sure I do this masterpiece justice.

Dodonpachi black label extra arcade version the one that had on Xbox 360 that you only can play only on a Japanese Xbox 360 so they will have a collection for PlayStation 4 right where they have all those games on there praise the Lord if they do I'm going to buy that🎮🕹😀👍🏾

@@TheElectricUnderground My reasons are personal. Because Aleste Branch is bringing us back Ellinor Waizen, along with two newcomers, and I believe Ubusuna is the successor to both Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.

Yes most likely PS4 only and absolutely get yourself a base PS4. PC does not have the shottrigger ports and they are all fantastic.

I think just to keep dev costs super low. PC requires more upkeep and patching, whereas they can pop it on PS4 and get uniform performance. Shame but that s probably the reason

The super easy modes need to stay. Being accessible to everyone is key. I’m not sure why these shmup guys have against that. More modes the better.
I explain in the vid that easy modes are good, but they need to be better balanced. M2 s super easy modes are actually too easy, they don't teach skills enough. Ccwe and gunvein have much better balanced easy modes
Man I was looking up if there was any way of getting "Magical Drop" games on PC and found "G-MODEアーカイブス19 マジカルドロップDX", I checked it on Steam and apparently there is a DoDonPachi DaiOuJou "G-MODE" version, and "G-MODE Archives is a reissue project that faithfully recreates old feature phone games as they were back then." lol

I ABSOLUTELY WANT DDP PORTED! That is my number 1! However, I'm not sure if we will see that anytime soon because atlus was involved in the publishing of DDP, and I think that adds some kind of complication to new ports.

Bought the game despite still being a shmup noob, and boy is there a lot to like. The Arcade Review and Spartan modes really speak to me as a teacher.
That said, I am a little disappointed that they only threw in BL as a bonus mode. From what I gathered that arrange is pretty much just better, especially for a noob like me who is not a fan of loops (even though he will never loop anyway).
Now if only we got a PC port as well. I have Dai Ou Jou on a RGH 3.0 Phat 360 but that port is really bad. The game itself plays fine but the menus and everything else is a mess.
Awesome that M2 is doing this. I'd love to see them up their output. 4-5 Shot Triggers releases a year would be nice.
Yeah I d love to see that too! I imagine though that the amount of quality they put into their ports is time consuming though, so it s a double edged sword. It takes forever, but the releases are amazing
I'm happy with 1 or 2 a year as long as they keep making them for PS4 for a while.

@@TheElectricUnderground Yeah. I realize it's not hard to import games, but that's still a big barrier to entry for westerners to discover titles. There's also the issue of pricing on imports compared to local releases (imports tend to cost more and be less available.)
